Chris Christie on Cohen Hearing: No Republicans Are Actually Defending Trump on ‘Substance’ ‘I think that’s something that should be concerning to the White House,’ the Trump ally noted.
Justin Baragona Justin Baragona 02.27.19 1:36 PM ET ABC News During the first break of Wednesday’s much-anticipated House Overnight Committee testimony of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, former New Jersey governor and long-time Trump ally Chris Christie made a keen observation: Republican committee members have not at all attempted to defend Trump “on the substance” of Cohen’s allegations.
At the start of the hearing Wednesday, the former Trump fixer shredded the president as a “racist,” “conman” and a “cheat,” adding that he was “ashamed” that he took part in “concealing Mr. Trump’s illicit acts.” Cohen also provided a series of documents corroborating some of his testimony.
With committee Republicans entirely focused on destroying Cohen’s credibility as a witness, Christie—now a paid ABC News analyst—observed that it really stood out how Republicans were not actually defending the president.
“The interesting thing is that there hasn’t been one Republican yet who has tried to defend the president on the substance, and I think that’s something that should be concerning to the White House,” Christie noted.
Asking “why are no Republicans standing up and defending the president on the substance” in the hearing, the former Trump transition-team chief added that this is “either a failure of those Republicans on the Hill or a failure of the White House to have a unified strategy with them.”
Christie concluded that they had to know this was coming with Cohen, so it will be a tired line of attack going after Cohen as the hearing continues.
“He’s not a credible witness, but he does have corroboration on certain things,” he asserted, asking once again: “Where is the defense of the president?”

That's an oxymoron - if there is corroboration to back up what the witness says - then he's credible. But Christie highlighted the same thing many of us have been saying.

I think his point is that if he was standing alone, he would not be credible... but with corroboration, he becomes another voice reaffirming what others are saying.

Now that we know that Cohen is in constant contact with the second district of New York concerning other crimes Trump may have committed, there's obviously some substance somewhere.

"We are better than this." -- Rep. Elijah Cummings
What a kind, compassionate man. And his outrage is righteous. I hope people are truly listening.

Missed the latter 2 hours or so, anything noteworthy happen then? Did GOP ever stop calling him a liar long enough to ask any actual questions pertaining to their duty of oversight? Did the Dem questioning reveal anything not previously known? How did the brilliant democratic socialist AOC do?

Dems dug into issues concerning tax records and associated fraud. AOC was into that as well. GOP spent the bulk of their time asking for disparaging articles written against Cohen to be submitted into the record.

The one thing Cohen has been consistent on is the lack of collusion. NO HE WASN'T! He said he suspected but could not prove collusion. He also said he was sitting there when Trump talked to stone and was given a heads up on the wikileaks dump days before it happened. That same day we have communication between wikileaks and guccifer 2.0 saying they received the list and would release it later that week! That's freaking collusion bro! Wake up. He's colluding right now with Putin! He told his people he didn't believe their reports because he believed what Putin told him about NK missiles! Face it, he's a traitorous colluding puppet.

This whole circus show was nothing more than the Dems opening ceremony as they file impeachment proceedings against the President.
That goofy lib billionaire from California has been traveling around to various districts pumping people up to put pressure on their reps to impeach.
Let the games begin.

I hate to burst your bubble but as part of his testimony to the House Oversight Committee, Cohen submitted a copy of a check for $35,000, which he said "Trump personally signed from his personal bank account" in August 2017 while serving as president to reimburse Cohen for the payments. It isn't illegal to pay your lawyer for services rendered. Nice try tho.

All of those 35,000 dollar checks amounted to the amount Donald paid Stormy to be quiet about their affair.
The money also came from Trump's account.
It's good to know you're on record saying you condone hush money payments from a sitting president.

Cohen said as much. He literally provided a receipt of a check saying Trump paid hush money. What reality do you live in? No - it was payment as a retainer for legal services. Right? Oh hang on - Giuliani admitted the payments to Stormy.... As for calling today a circus ??? The only part that was a circus - a pitiful circus - was the Republicans not examining what was said, not investigating .... and not actually defending Trump (other than the black maid that stood up in some failed gesture) .... but instead ALL they did was attack Cohen and put into record things that were in the public domain and public record already. THAT was a circus. Trump's fixer of the last 10 years spilled the beans on several illegal activities of Trump. He stated Roger Stone communicated the email dump to Trump before it happened. He said that Trump's tax returns were not under audit - and that if they were audited he'd probably be in trouble.... He also revealed that Sthn District of NY has ongoing investigations into Trump. He did all that while getting ready to go to jail because previously he lied to congress to protect Trump.... He did all this with nothing to gain - his plea deal is with the Stn distict of NY and it isn't going to change based on testimony to this committee. . . . AND he did all this with the knowledge that if he did lie today - instead of serving 3 years he would end up serving closer to the 70 years he could have been on the hook for without the plea deal. . . . and yet the brainless stooges want to come on here and say Cohen is a liar and nothing he says and no evidence he brought to corroborate his statements should be believed. smh

Now, I answered your question, will you answer mine?
Cohen testified he met with Elijah Cummings and Adam Schiff the day before his testimony, to discuss what he would say.
When Republicans were accused of talking to witnesses ahead of a hearing, the Washington Post, NY Times, Politico and the Hill all went nuts accusing them of "Prepping the Witness".
Do you think this is right and how many stories do you think we will read about this prepping of the witness tomorrow?
Like I said, let the show begin.

Not one question pertaining to the actions of Potus or anyone in the executive branch from the right, not one. Just smears and attacks on Cohen which he annihilated from jump with his opening statement and supporting documents.

You guys are funny. You really believe it would hold up in court as a crime to pay your own attorney for money he had spent on your behalf? You really think anything would be believed when your star witness is a convicted perjurer? You really think if Cohen had anything, Mueller would have thrown his arse in jail without using him as a witness? You guys are very naive and full of blind hate.

You must be feeling vulnerable, that was a fantastically weak response.
Do i think a convicted felon would be believed in court? Not based solely on his words... But with corroborating evidence, absolutely.
You talk as if the hush money payments aren't already accepted and verified. Smh. Again, you have zero interest in truth, your sole intent is to spread disinformation and deflect. It's very sad.

I just find it so hilarious that the Trumpers are using his conviction for lying to congress as a reason to discredit him when he was lying to Congress to cover for Trump Please stop embarrassing the Republican party. the dems aren't wasting time asking question they already know the answer to. they are asking about the dynamics with trump, the business, the payments, etc. questions that we all want answers for.
the GOP just keeps reviewing the charges against cohen and asking him if he's a good lawyer. i am especially disappointed by ohio GOP jordan and gibbs. they looked completely unprepared. Some of the worst times in our history took place in front of the camera yesterday.. Dems asking questions that went to the heart of the matter and Republicans not asking much of anything. Just ripping Cohen for things he's already been convicted of. Smooth man.,,, Smooth as a fresh jar of Skippy. That's the Republican way. What the hell was it with the IDIOT Republican (name escapes me) over the boxes of material that Cohen referred to. My goodness, Cohen said, CLEARLY that those boxes were returned to him from the FBI after they'd been gone through. What the hell was his frickin problem..... Dumb And what the hell is with Jordan lying... Geez... Dumb The person I was most impressed with was AOC.. Cut right to the heart of the matter. Very serious, clear and essentially, made a case for a need for the House to see Trumps Taxes and to bring in his CFO of the Trump Org. Very well done young lady.

Higgins was the guy fixated on the boxes who made an arse of himself. A whole lot of Republicans should be totally ashamed of themselves.
AOC - first time I have ever seen/heard her. Because of all the noise about her specifically I have avoided her. She did well in the 45 seconds that I saw her.

Listening to various news outlets - GOP party line so far:
Cohen is a liar - NOTHING he says is true or worth listening to and the hearing was a farce .... EXCEPT when Cohen says he witnessed no evidence of collusion.... on that issue Cohen's word is golden and you can take it to the bank !!

Today we can start Trump's 2020 victory party! Yesterday's hearings not only bolstered Trump, but made the Dems look like fools.
Their "witness" is a convicted felon. I laughed when he was "sworn in". Like his words mean anything.
It was like swearing in Frank Pantangelli. Those of you who appreciate great movies knows who Frank Pantangelli is.

You do realize that almost every mafia member who has been convicted was sent there by the testimony of a convicted felon, right? That prosecutors use convicted felons as witnesses all the time, right?

You’re dillusional if you think that bolstered trump.
the GOP didn’t even defend trump, you realize that right? They didn’t even try to defend trumps character or defend him against the allegations. They just tried discrediting Cohen, but it didn’t work.
That’s says a lot.

So far Trump is running against Child killers, Socialists who want everything to be free, anti gunners, those who place politics over Country when it comes to the border wall and people who favor illegals over our own citizens. Your only hope is to keep on trying to "Get Trump". Otherwise you will continue to be losers.
