I like Howard Cosell's take on things. Why take any idiot ex-athlete to announce games when there are plenty of knowledgeable sports journalism grads who could offer so much more. I'm not saying there aren't former pros who do an excellent job, but some of the ones they put in the booth are absolutely terrible.

At least athletes have the experience of how teams work, how plays are designed and what the strategies are from the inside. I've never seen anyone anticipate what's going to happen and why like Bernie does.
And we've all read some of the crap "sports journalists" crank out.

I think Tony Romo does a great job of identifying defenses and predicting plays. He was absolutely on fire in the AFC Championship game.
It was kind of weird during the Super Bowl, because it seemed as if he was instructed to stop predicting so many plays.

I used to love when they would get drunk on-air. There was one time where Howard and Alex Karras were so wasted they were giggling like school girls. They had me laughing.

"He missed the game and didn't like the T.V. life," Watkins' source said. "ESPN liked him, he was going to do more in the draft to build his confidence," were the words of another. Witten started out poorly in the booth and made little progress as the season progressed. This is best for all involved. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Cowboys have "long considered" Witten a head-coaching candidate. Since T.V. does not seem to be in Witten's future, the sidelines likely will be. I would have to say that all of the pre games are scripted and I'm not really impressed with any of them. But you're right that some athletes do well and some poorly at it. But Howard was an attorney and we surely don't need a group of lawyers commentating the NFL either.

Didn't Joe Thomas audition for the MNF job when they hired Witten? I've heard his podcast and he also does a weekly appearance on ESPN-Cleveland's RBS. He's very knowledgeable, well spoken and personable. I bet he'd be great as an analyst for MNF.

Not only that, but replacing him after one year would be horrible look for the executive that hired him. Witten would have been allowed time to grow in the role. He certainly did struggle in year one though. The MNF dynamic with Booger in the Boogermobile was odd and made the broadcast seem clunky. Witten going back to playing was probably a blessing for both parties.

But Booger's commentary was outstanding, insightful, and well prepared. I think people are confusing the execution with the content.

Louis Riddick I wouldn't mind... I'm not sure I could listen to Peyton, something about when he talks is like nails on a chalkboard.

I love Riddick for all the reasons you mentioned, plus he isn't into all of the exaggeration... Not every guy is elite, not every guy is "one of the best in the league"... He just seems to have better perspective than most when it comes to evaluating players and teams...
