Let's see...
Adderley Rapp Abram Thornhill Gardner-Johnson...
Welp...of the the tube of You...
'Being There' is one of my all-time favorite movies. Having Chauncy Gardner(-Johnson) on the Browns would be extra special.

There are very few movies that I can watch more than once.
Being There, is one and The Big Lebowski is another.

Tre Boston is extremely physical. He gets some penalties for his viscous hits, but he might be a guy worth looking at if we don't want to stick w/Kindred. I'm sorry Vers, but I can't help but imagine a highlight tape with slurping sounds dubbed over every hit. (viscous/vicious) I wouldn't mind him at the right price. Darnell Savage from Maryland is a kind of interesting option in the draft. Would probably get burnt at times if opposing QBs have time for double moves to develop, but he has some nice burst when he decides to go.

I think Deionte Thompson from Alabama might be there and a definite pick if so. I also like Rapp from Washington.
We probably will pick one of the many FA Safeties out there I'm pretty interested in Waddle???

Safeties are a swell idea! I can't imagine who can replace Peppers back there. So let's find a FA.

I think if we enter the season with Kindred at SS we are just fine. That is our "worst case" scenario, and as someone stated in another thread, Kindred is not much of a step down from Peppers (if at all) and many thought he would get the nod over Peppers last year, anyway. Heck, I liked Peppers and rooted for him to do well here and thought much of his criticism (like playing so deep) was overblown because he was just doing as he was coached... but, even I was surprised he got the nod over Kindred last season. Kindred has us covered just fine and anyone we draft will have a chance to work their way into upgrading the spot.

Kindred doesn't have to concede anything to a rookie coming in. We still don't know the intricacies of Wilks' defense. Its possible that Kindred is best suited for what Wilks wants at the position. I'm willing to wait and see.
I am not willing to rely on him as the only option. I fully expect either a vet or a rookie to come in. At this point, I'd put my money on any addition coming from the draft.
The more I look at it, I think at selection #49 you could choose from Thornhill, Savage or Hooker. I'd be surprised if Gardner-Johnson was available at the point.

I think we need another quality safety and I bet Dorsey gets us one.
Kindred is good up close the LOS in the run game, but is about the worst coverage guy I have ever seen. He is even worse than Peppers in that regard and that is saying something.
I think Kindred has a place on the team, but our pass defense will be severely compromised if he is a starter. our linebackers have taken a lot of public abuse in the past few years because we haven't had a SS who can cover his own damn shadow.
This position should be upgraded.

Not disagreeing with you. But I'll go watch some Game Pass of Kindred to judge his pass defense for myself. Maybe I'll see what you see. One thing is certain, more personnel is needed at the SS position for sure.

Here are some Db's that are still available in free agency. I don't know much about any other than Berry, but thought I'd share. Let me know if any of these would be worth looking at. Link for the next few posts https://www.rotoworld.com/sports/nfl/football

Free agent S Clayton Geathers visited the Bucs on Tuesday.
It means he left his Monday Cowboys visit without a deal. Always injured, Geathers has flashed some upside when healthy. He appeared in 12 games for the Colts last season, his most since 2015. The Bucs are very thin at the back end of their defense.

Free agent CB Sean Smith has been reinstated from indefinite suspension.
Smith served roughly half a year in jail after reaching a plea agreement in a felony assault case. Smith attacked his sister's boyfriend. He was discharged last September but then suspended by the NFL. Going on 32, Smith had a rough year in 2017. His playing days are probably through but perhaps he had enough useful seasons to get a second chance.

Yahoo's Terez Paylor reports free agent Eric Berry left his Cowboys visit without a deal.
Per Paylor, Berry will now embark on other visits. Where he might be going is unclear. Even with his major injury concerns, Berry is the best of what is left on a picked-over safety market.

Free agent CB Nevin Lawson will visit the Raiders on Wednesday.
A starter since 2015, Lawson was released by the Lions on the eve of free agency. He is capable of playing both inside and out, though he is not particularly effective at either spot. He would be an experienced depth addition for the Raiders' thin cornerback corps. It is one group they have yet to address with their profligate spending this offseason.

Berry is the guy I am keeping tabs on.
My thoughts were if he left the Cowboys without a deal it could mean a couple things.
He may want to look around and get a good feel for the teams interested.
Or, maybe he is unable to pass a team physical.
If Berry is cleared to play. And he can play at the level he did in the past?? I hope we get him. He is a high character guy with a ton of talent.

Berry would be a good get. Is he more of a SS or FS? I would hope if we brought him in that means his health issues have been sorted out.
I think it will be ok if we go with Kindred, depending on the type of setup Wilks likes to deploy. As long as we're not asking Kindred to cover a ton, we should be fine.
Kindred played alright when he was a starter, and that was pre Randall AND Ward. His coverage responsilities, I would assume, would be significantly less.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

This is the main question with Berry:
Berry ruptured his Achilles in 2017, and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported in September he was dealing with a Haglund's deformity in his Achilles, which is a painful bone spur that digs into the tissue.
The report is his doctors say he can play without surgery on this. That they have a program in place for him.
Dorsey knows Berry. So if we don't sign him. It will be because of this heel issue.

Typically, when a player hits 30, they have a harder time staying on the field. Sure there are exceptions, but when we look at who he has added to the roster, it is obvious that he is avoiding players on the wrong side of 30.
The players on the roster, who are 30+. who Dorsey has added to the roster .... well .... Drew Stanton. He did also sign Darren Fells, who was 31 ... and who lasted one year ... and Rod Streater. Tyrod and Collins Jr. are both 29, and neither was retained or brought back. The only other players 29+ on this year's roster are Kush and Colquit.
Analytics does play a part in this, as most players decline or leave the game by 30. there are some exceptions, of course, I cannot see Dorsey being interested in a 30 year old Eric Berry, who has been injured in both of the past 2 seasons.
There are about 250 players in the NFL who are 30+.
I just looked, and there are about 341 players in the NFL listed as 30+ years old.
OL was the most heavily populated part of the list, with 68 players who are 30+ still playing in the NFL.
P: 13 K: 15 QB: 30 RB: 12 TE: 23 WR: 30 LS: 5 DL: 56 DB: 53 LB: 28 S: 4 (specifically listed on the list) DB: 53
I am not sure how many of these have retired. I saw Ngata's name on the list, and he just retired. There are almost 1700 players total on NFL 53 man rosters. We just have a couple, so we are well below average in this regard, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

George Iloka might be worth a look at SS. Of course, haven't seen much of him since the Bengals. Not sure what he did last year, but he's still under 30.

J/C - Could it be we don't see much of an upgrade over Kindred in the current market, at the prices that folk like Berry may ask? I thought Derek played well his rookie year. Sure, he could be better in coverage, but that may come with some time.
As for the draft - I think I'd rather us draft a safety who is more coverage than a hitter. It's the way the NFL is going. 5 DBs - if you have 2 safeties who can cover and tackle, then all the better but I think being able to cover is more of a priority. I also have an eye on Randall and the future deal he may or may not get.
A decent SS should be there in the 3rd or later if that's what we are aiming at IMHO.

i have to say im a bit surprised the dorse hasn't reached out to eric berry 30 years old. Coming off injury. Missed most of the last 2 seasons. Likely to still be expensive. There really isn't much to lead anyone to the idea that we would pursue him, based on the players Dorsey has gone for in his time here.

Thornhill can absolutely play SS. Quite a bit of the game video I've seen of him has him in the box. You also see him in 2 deep. But he would be an extremely athletic SS. If Willis wants to play more zone he would not be unfamiliar with those duties.

I wouldn't chance it...

I go drafted rookie. There are 3-4 who could be there when we draft at #49. The beauty is SS is a position that usually doesn't come off the board in the 1st round.
No doubt he need to replace Peppers. Peppers was heading to form last year. The Giants got a good player.

I still favor Chauncey Gardner-Johnson...but that's just cause I'm a fan of the movie. Of course that's contingent on his Being There at #49.

J/C - Whilst I think CGJ is a good player, his draft status has risen after the college season ended. He should be there at 49.
It reminds me a little, in reverse, of Desmond King. He was projected as a 1st rounder but dropped due to speed concerns. Drafted in the 5th by San Diego. Currently one of the better safeties in the league. I understand he was a CB @ Iowa but he was always going to be a safety with his 4.5 speed. Apologies for the digression. Just illustrates to me that 32 teams got it wrong 4 times (or 5) before SD drafted him. I think if a guy can play football, he can play football. The "noise" post college season, bar the interviews and background checks, is just that and shouldnt sway the argument more than a few %. Anyone remember Obi Melifonwu (sp)?
