BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: All criminal charges against Jussie Smollett have been dropped and his record has been expunged, the actor’s attorney confirms.

ORIGINAL STORY:

CHICAGO — Jussie Smollett made an “emergency court appearance” in Chicago Tuesday, a representative for the actor confirmed.

The reason for the appearance is not known. Smollett and his lawyers are expected speak to the media afterward at the courthouse.

Smollett’s attorney Mark Geragos was recently named as the unidentified co-conspirator in court papers charging attorney Michael Avenatti with attempting to shake down Nike for $25 million by threatening the company with bad publicity. Avenatti’s clients include some of R. Kelly’s alleged victims.

Smollett is charged with lying to Chicago police about a January attack in the city’s Streeterville neighborhood.

Prosecutors allege that Smollett, who is black and gay, staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted to promote his career. A grand jury indicted Smollett on 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false report.

Smollett has denied that he staged the attack and maintains he is innocent.

I don't care so much about this story except that this was used against libs by the right. Looks like he did get attacked and somebody framed him because it looked bad for the MAGA crowd, although details are not yet clear. Case dropped, record expunged.

Yep. Prosecutors saying that he forfeited his bail and they took his prior community service into account as justification. But defense are saying that there is no community service attached and charges dropped/record expunged. He gets a clean record/mulligan whichever is true.

Chicago pfft They have a Court of public opinion and now they want to seal it from the public? Wow.

And think that R.Kelly might be getting a lucky break...What's going to happen to his victims now that their lawyer is probably going to see life.

They are saying the Chicago prosecutor rushed to judgement and used the court of public opinion to try their case. Has Adam Schiff been moonlighting as a Chicago prosecutor?

In January Smollet said he was attacked by two white males.

Today his lawyers said the Nigerian brothers clearly did it and that they admitted to it.

Smollett said he never lied. (Yet forfeited bail)

Which is it?

Also a huge thing overlooked is that when the police originally told him they had two suspects in custody, he said he wanted to press charges. Then when they told him they were the Nigerian brothers, he stopped cooperating completely.

To his knowledge, he was ready to let two random dudes take the fall as he had hoped and planned. That deserves more than forfeited bail, IMHO.

Where do you get that? It's not the police that screwed up, it's the crooked DA who was in contact with Smollett's family and at their request (along with Michelle Obama's former chief of staff's insistence) was trying to get this turned over to the FBI. Once the DA was ratted out for her shenanigans, she recused herself. The police and even mayor Rham are livid over her actions and that of the assistant DA that dropped the charges.

Nobody's denying the Nigerian brothers are the ones who attacked Smollett, and nobody's denying that Smollett paid them to do it. There's a lot of stink in this case. There's already talk of charging the DA.

Just business as usual in Chicago Democratic politics...Somebody got payed.

I don't give a damn about this case but I think it's funny how invested the right is in seeing justice done. And I honestly don't know what happened here or care if Jussie goes to jail, I had never heard of him before this.

But it's striking to see something so petty get the exact opposite response from the same posters who railed against the Mueller investigation for two + years.

Guy fakes an attack to promote himself and the world shifts... Potus looks like he colluded with Russia or is somehow compromised time and time again, and there is no there there... I just ignored the story when it first broke because I didn't see why it was political. Still don't think it is to be honest. But it became weird enough today that it was worth sharing.

Some poster's talking about Michelle Obama and I still don't know what that is about unless that's some Fox News stuff. But I haven't looked into it because I just don't care.

ALLIES ASKED SA KIM FOXX TO INTERVENE
Leaked Texts, Emails Show

had pals of his in the Cook County State's Attorney's ear early on in his case -- and, based on leaked correspondence, it looks like she acted on his behalf.

Texts and emails between State Attorney Kim Foxx and two Jussie allies -- one of which is reported to be a family member of his -- have been leaked, and they show that Foxx was asked to intervene in the case a few days after he'd reported the alleged attack to Chicago PD. It appears that she did exactly that ... and kept Jussie's camp in the loop. The initial correspondence started when Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen, emailed Foxx to say that she was reaching out on behalf of Jussie's family to express "concerns" they had with how the investigation at that point was being handled.

Jussie had not been charged with a crime yet, but it's believed Chicago PD was already doubting his story and leaking info to the press pushing that narrative.

Foxx responded to Tchen on Feb. 1, saying ... "Spoke to Superintendent Johnson. I convinced him to Reach out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation. He is reaching out now and will get back to me shortly."

The same day, an unnamed relative of Jussie's texted Foxx herself, as well, and Foxx said she was working on getting the case sent over to the FBI. The relative replied, "Omg this would a huge victory." Foxx then responded, "I make no guarantees, but I'm trying."

Later, Foxx recused herself from the case when Jussie became a suspect. And, of course, her office just announced Tuesday that it was dropping all of the charges against Jussie, after coming out strong with a 16-count indictment just weeks earlier.

Her official reasoning for dropping the charges ... Jussie has done community service in the community, so we're good. Her office asked a judge to seal the case, and they obliged. Mayor Rahm Emanuel strongly hinted at corruption in the State's Attorney's Office.

The Chicago-Tribune first reported on the leaked texts and emails.

On the heels of all the charges being dropped against Jussie earlier Tuesday, the Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago is asking the Dept. of Justice to investigate Kim Foxx and her involvement in this case.
