Bill Polian: NFL may let some players under contract play in AAF Posted by Michael David Smith on March 6, 2019, 8:08 PM EST The NFL might allow some of its young players to get experience by playing in the Alliance of American Football. Bill Polian, the Hall of Fame general manager and AAF executive, says he and some NFL colleagues have talked informally about whether certain young players could play in the AAF during the NFL offseason. “The talk is ramping up – I’ll say that,” Polian told USA Today. It could make sense for the NFL to assign some players who haven’t had much playing time to the AAF to help them gain additional experience. Young quarterbacks in particular might be able to improve with AAF playing time — and for those who don’t improve, it at least alerts their NFL teams not to count on them in the fall. It’s unclear whether the NFL Players Association would approve of such an idea. When the current Collective Bargaining Agreement was negotiated, the players got a reduced offseason workload. The union might not agree to allow players to spend three months in the AAF during the offseason. Then again, those players would be collecting an additional salary from the AAF, which the union might view as worth it. “Those discussions will continue but whether they bear fruit remains to be seen,” Polian said. “There are lots of procedural hurdles that have to be crossed before you could make that happen.” The AAF has been careful to make clear that it is not competing with the NFL and actually wants to solidify its relationship with the NFL. Next year, that might even include some NFL backups on the field in the AAF. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20...ct-play-in-aaf/

I thought Kaepernick already turned the AAF down - he's not playing for a lousy $250K. I read somewhere yesterday that he was hoping for a call from Miami, now that they traded what's his name to Tenn.

I gotta say ... the AAF is looking better and better each week. They have had some really exciting games.
The NFL Network has the Arizona/Orlando game from last night on. Really fun game.

and yet, still no Kap signing. The AAF reached out to him. Even though every player in the league has a 3 year, non guaranteed $250K contract, Kap wanted $20M to play. #ThatsWhyHeKneels

I hope not. I have found the Alliance to be enjoyable.

Well, I have followed the Birmingham Iron and have enjoyed their games, but when Birmingham is involved in a new league, you can guarantee it will go defunct...

I'm guessing the NFL will do something to allow players to be in the AAF. They will not be so kind to the XFL.

Much like you I have been drawn to the Birmingham Iron. I think it has a lot to do with the rough and physical style of their play. The fact the smaller cities without NFL teams have been used to form this league makes perfect sense. It's no different than the minor league baseball model.
It's a great fill in after the NFL season and before the draft. The quality of play is getting somewhat better over time. I certainly consider it an experiment of sorts and wouldn't be crushed if it folds. On the other hand I would certainly miss it at the end of the 2019 NFL season.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

What do they mean "use NFL players"? As in players who are actively signed to current NFL teams? That doesnt seem plausible.

Can you show where this was false, because all I find are reports like this one. Report: Colin Kaepernick, Tim Tebow turned down AAF offers | SI.com https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/02/14/colin-kaepernick-tim-tebow-aaf-offer-turned-downThe Alliance of American Football reportedly reached out to former NFL starting quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Tim Tebow, but was turned down by both, according to The Athletic's Lindsay Jones. AAF co-founder Bill Polian told Jones that league CEO Charlie Ebersol contacted Kaepernick to gauge his interest in playing. "I don't know what transpired, but he's obviously not playing," Polian said. Kaepernick reportedly wanted $20 million or more to consider joining the league, per the Associated Press.

A little time on the internet and one can find multiple references to this story. I have not been able to find anything stating it was false.

I can't say for certain, but I think Eve is sharp enough to remember that we did draft Scooby out of college but released him during roster cuts. My read on her post was sarcasm, just not purple.

Right, the website may be crap, who knows, but Allbright is a pretty accurate guy, and it's at least 2 people willing to out their name on it, not "sources." Sounds like they turned them down without money talks. The other "reports" are all piggy backed off 1 "source."

How can this possibly be when they have a limited payroll, and a TV contract with the NFL Network and CBS?

How can this possibly be when they have a limited payroll, and a TV contract with the NFL Network and CBS? They are probably next to no money for the TV contracts. Add in stadium costs, advertising, etc. and they are toast.
