I would think it would be impossible to get insurance for something like that. When you have to itemize the values and everything comes back as "priceless", who's going to want to insure that?

Which is why Macron is leading the charge to rebuild it. Not the Catholic church. Art should be kept in a museum, where they have fireproof cases for things like this It's odd how so many dispute that when speaking of confederate statues.

J/C From an article posted here already... The United Nations says it will be supporting the French government in rebuilding fire-ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral through its Paris-based cultural agency UNESCO "in whatever way they feel is most necessary."
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday that the cathedral is a UNESCO world heritage site "so I know our colleagues there will do whatever they can" following Monday's fire.
Maybe insurance works differently over there, but would they be required to pay for this? Especially if it was from the construction crew doing the work....Seems odd they would need donations and the UN to assist. There is no way a construction company has anywhere close to the amount of insurance it would take to replace this.. and if you go after them or sue them, they would likely just go out of business... either way, and even if you win, you would only recover a small fraction of what this is going to cost.

When a contractor gets a license they have to be bonded. That insurance that covers a bond is only for so much coverage. It only covers the maximum amount the policy provides for. That would never cover the cost of the rebuild here. A tiny fraction at best. You can't collect money that isn't there. You're not gong to find a subcontractor that has enough money or insurance to rebuild this.

Huge stained glass windows everywhere. Are we to dome it? Should the entire structure be moved into a museum? Just the stained glass? Curious. This is not meant as a slight... or a way to slight you... or to judge... or anything else just a question from a place of curiosity... have you been to Paris? I will say I went out of ‘convenience’. I had a wedding to attend in Spain. Flights were cheap to Amsterdam. Paris is in the middle. So we stopped and spent a few days. It was never really much on my bucket list of places to visit. That said it captured me. It stands today looking much as it did when Napoleon was running the show. The fact that France rolled over to the Germans so easily spared Paris from massive bombing. It’s history, alive today. It’s like waking around a museum that you live in. Seeing Notre Dame, the Louvre, the the Eiffel Tower (a much more recent landmark), etc really effected me. After not having it on my bucket list I’d now recommend traveling there to anyone that enjoys travel. It’s easy to see why it’s so highly regarded. Why it should be a bucket list place.

The Country of France insured it, so the country should have to pay for it. If not, they should not have self insured it or owned it if they couldn't pay for it in the event something like this happened.
Where do you think the money is coming from - Tax payers. I mean its frances problem, so its not my money being taxed to pay for a religious building, but seems that amount of money could do a lot more good elsewhere. JMO

Well, you're in the minute minority if you deem it as just a "religious building". As far as taxpayers footing the bill... they would have been footing the bill for an outlandish insurance policy if it were not "self inured". Six dozen of one, half dozen of another.

I get that. The country should be footing the bill though - not asking for others to pay for it. I read the UN is offering assistance, and the money donated. Seems like we could do a lot more with that kind of money. As far as it being a "religious building", I just think Jesus would rather help people with money, than build a new replacement

How is an insurance claim taxpayer funded? I think he means that the citizens would be paying the premiums, so they're paying either way.

They're taking donations to pay for it. Over $600,000,000 they have raised so far as of the last report I heard. The tax payers of France are not paying for it.

Seems like we could do a lot more with that kind of money. That argument applies to almost every dollar/euro/yen/peso/etc spent every day in the world.... This building is a national treasure for France and a highly respected global treasure for everybody else and folks want to feel like they contributed...

Nah. You have to fix it (and this ND church needs fixing as well - I've seen dozens of my friends post pictures on Facebook over the past few days of their visit, I had no idea I knew that many people that visited this thing).

The Cathedral is owned by France and "self insured" Construction insurance has limits at about 10 million euro, as the article states - "a drop in the bucket". Repair costs are estimated at 8 billion and so far it looks like close to a billion has been pledged by outside sources. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/notre-dame-has-no-insurance-policy-2019-04-16 That's a scam and a half. No chance it's 8 BILLION. That's a money grab for the people who will do the repairs.

After the horrific fire at Notre Dame, I have been concerned about the possibility of arson at other marvelous historic sights by political groups, emotionally disturbed people, etc. Here is an example of that: Man arrested after approaching historic St. Patrick's Cathedral with gas cans, light fluid
ABC News KARMA ALLEN,ABC News 9 hours ago
Man arrested after approaching historic St. Patrick's Cathedral with gas cans, light fluid originally appeared on abcnews.go.com
A man was arrested in New York City on Wednesday night after he tried to enter a cathedral with gas cans, triggering worries about a possible arson attempt in the wake of a destructive fire at the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Officers with the New York Police Department said they arrested a 37-year-old man outside of the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral after he entered the building with two gasoline cans, two bottles of lighter fluid and butane lighters.
A cathedral security officer stopped the man, who spilled some gasoline on the floor, and alerted counterterrorism officers who were standing nearby. An officer with the NYPD's Critical Response Command took the man, into custody without incident. PHOTO: A man was arrested trying to enter St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan, N.Y., with two gas canisters, lighter fluid and lighters on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. (New York Police Department)
The suspect is Marc Lamparello, of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, according to two police sources.
There were no injuries reported.
"His basic story was that he was cutting through the cathedral to get to Madison Avenue, that his car had run out of gas," NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller told reporters at a press conference Wednesday night. "We took a look at the vehicle. It was not out of gas and at that point he was taken into custody."
Sources with knowledge of the investigation told ABC News that the suspect was being treated as an emotionally disturbed person.
The man’s intentions were not immediately clear though one police source noted “the timing is odd,” given that we are two days from the fire at Notre Dame. There is no indication the cause of the Notre Dame Cathedral fire was arson.
When asked if terrorism was a possible motive, Miller said, "It's too early to say that. It's hard to say exactly what his intentions were."
Miller said security had been added in the recent days after the Paris fire. "This is an indicator of something that would be very suspicious," he said.
The famous cathedral, which opened its doors nearly 200 years ago, serves as seat of the New York Archdiocese.
The Archdiocese confirmed the incident in a statement to ABC News.
"The individual was stopped as he tried to come into the cathedral. Was turned over to the police," the statement said. "Nothing happened inside the cathedral. Any further info has to come from the NYPD."
The suspect had been charged with a crime as of late Wednesday night, but he is expected to be held for a psychiatric evaluation, police sources said.
ABC News' Aaron Katersky and Darren Reynolds contributed to this report.

Something like that is so easy to fake with a video editor. It almost looks like a photograph of the Cathedral, that someone reduced the resolution on, and then added a figure moving around. Naturally, the only footage of this always lands in the hands of some "conspiracy dude", and he never reveals the original source of the material.
Then again, the French investigators have already said that they've determined the cause of the fire was an electrical short, even though they've admitted that they haven't even had access to the scene because of safety concerns. Seems pretty premature?

The Vatican is worth billions. They can use the money they spend on defending their pedophile priests to fix the cathedral.

Yet France and the rest of the world seem to believe it's a lot more than a "Catholic thing". Notre Dame Cathedral has more visitors than the Eiffel Tower and is a huge boost to the economy of Paris.
So you telling people where they should donate their money now too?

Americans won’t donate to crap right here in America, but will donate to some cathedral they never even been to.
1) Did anyone ever ask people to donate to fix Flint's water issue? 2) American's donate every day to American charities, issues, fund raisers etc. JJ Watt raised 40 million for Hurricane Harvey relief, the bulk of which cam from Americans, for Americans. Not to mention people donate their time and skills to causes everyday, not all of them are publicized. I'd be willing to bet, there are more Americans donating money, time and labor than there are criminals committing crimes on a daily basis, but that doesn't make for good nightly news stories.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Flint MI is now a charity? Seems the citizens of Flint MI "donated" their taxes to have a functioning water supply. What happened there?

yall couldve donated supplies and money to the many people taking in things to help the people while the government tried to fix the issue.
i know i did.
but i guess some cathedral in a different continent owned by pedophiles is more important than your fellow americans. i get it though. this is DT, where supporting pedophiles like the catholic church and roy moore is A ok here.
