A lot of people hold a great deal of contempt for fed/state/local governments here in the US and believe that with the tax money they collect, and the tax money they squander, that it's not worth donating to bail them out of a problem THEY created through irresponsible management in the first place.

Now you can make the argument that, in the end, they aren't punishing the government as much as they are punishing the citizens who are suffering and you would largely be right.

I have donated a little to help the folks of Flint, MI through private charities. I'm not giving a dime to anybody associated with the government though.. they have had millions upon millions of dollars and 5 full years to actually "fix" the problem and I have zero confidence that my money would be used in any beneficial way toward that effort by the government morons in charge...
