While I still wonder what is up w/Greedy, it must be emphasized that we did pick him w/the 46th pick overall. It's not like we chose him at 17.

Unless I mis-heard Dorsey, it sounds like he said "we didn't get who we want..." That strikes me as a slip, not the sort of thing you should say while starting off a press conference about your draft pick.

Love all the cute stuff, but I have some real football talk that is on my mind.
Greedy was thought to be the top DB in the draft early on. Is that wrong? It may by because I did not follow the draft like I usually do. I just seem to remember that he was at--or near--the top of the list of DBs coming into the year.
Yet, several DBs were drafted ahead of him. I don't know about you guys, but my immediate question is "Why?"
I think most agree that he is very good in coverage. Is that debatable? I'm not sure. I really am asking. I just heard he is great in coverage. I did not study him.
I heard he avoided tackling. Late to the pile kind of guy. But, is that enough to drop the draft's best cover corner that much?
I saw a report that Grateful posted that addressed the shoulder injury and how he didn't visit teams.
That makes me say..............."Hmmmmmmm........" Is there a significant injury to his shoulder and is that why he dropped in the draft?
If so, did we draft damanged goods or will he be healed by TC?
Look, I don't want to hear from the agenda folks. I don't want to hear that everything is honky-dory or that it's doom and gloom.
Instead, I want to hear from football dudes like Tru, Dep, Pit, etc. I also want to hear from logical dudes like Clem, Cap, Purp, etc.
The question is: Is it possible that Greedy has a signifcant injury that might affect his availabilty and/or performance moving forward? Don't over-think it. This dude's a stud cover corner. Like Dorsey says, "Just get the guy down". Lol. Something else. This draft was real deep on the DL. Especially 1st rounders. That alone will push guys down the board. 1st time since I BELIEVE 1974 that no Corner or WR went top 20. That speaks volumes.

I don't think there's anything wrong with his shoulder. There was an injury a year ago that was said to be fully healed at the start of the season. Although once an injury happens people tend to be concerned.
The knocks on Greedy were his toughness and his tackling. And I think this is why he dropped. He could probably be a star in the right situation.
A lot of people seem to want the CB to just cover and not tackle. No problem. Greedy was predicted at one point anywhere from 5 overall to somewhere in the 2nd wrong. I think he dropped farther than he should have based on some of the needs of other teams. He has good size for a corner and is pretty fast. Those are some of the measurables we like.
I like the pick. Wasn't my choice, but I think he'll be just fine. You can stop the pass from being thrown and you can stop a pass from being caught. I think we're covering all bases.

I'm sure you've gotten multiple responses to this, and I will go back and read them when I'm done with this (and see where I misspoke).
I did not really look too deep into Williams as I did not see him as a possibility. While I did see some of him on the field, this is mostly from the mocks and projections. Top 10, top 15. Even when we had the #17 pick he rarely fell to that. By most accounts, he was a top 10-15 talent.
After the pick was made, I did not see anything suggesting we made a mistake. Even looking at the tweets (yes, I know, anyone with a internet connection can tweet) posted here, there were things like "The Browns did have a 1st round pick after all" and "He would have been a good pick at 17."
By many accounts, he is the top cover guy in this draft, and Dorsey does love him cover guys. Two years in a row we grabbed the top cover guy. People speak of his speed, fluidity and hips. Can't teach those.
But, you raise an extremely valid point. Evey year, there are guys who are "steals" at where they got picked. What this means is that teams passed on him for whatever reason. A guy who falls far is a guy who, for whatever reason, was passed on by a lot of teams. So, with Williams, why?
TBH, I have no idea. And I have not read anything from anyone who gives a definitive reason. There are possibilities.
Tackling? Dorsey does not shy away from the fact he is not a tackler. But he is a cover guy, and a lot of cover guys in the NFL aren't tacklers. It's something you live with when it comes to good man-to-man DBs.
The injury? Can't say for sure, I was not aware of this until now. It really wasn't brought up during the draft itself.
Sitting out the bowl game? Eh. This is a thing now. As much as I don't like (along with a lot of my generation, I would think) it's common place enough that it is not a red flag.
Not working out for teams. See above. This is also a think now. This has a better chance of rubbing someone the wrong was than skipping a bowl game, but I don't see it as a game changer.
In the end, Dorsey is happy. I questioned him last year and that reminded me why he is where he is and why I am not waerling his sweatshirt. Let's see how it plays out.
If I had to put my finger on it, I think this is just one of those things that happened. For once, it happened to us, and not NE or Pitt. Maybe karma is coming around, finally. Maybe the draft gods tempted us to see how we would proceed?
A lot of words without saying anything. On to Congress, I guess.

W84...not sure, but I believe the comment about not getting who they wanted was referring to the Browns failed attempt to trade back into the first round on Thursday night.
Don't know if they ever said who they might have been trying to draft..they just failed in their effort to trade up...
...that's how interpreted Dorsey's comment.

Man, I have no idea why he dropped this far. It did seem like everyone and their brother wanted DL and acted accordingly. That pushes other players down the board.
But in my honest opinion, I think this was a very poor draft class. I didn't study this draft in depth but everywhere from QB, to LT, to RB, to WR, I think when everything pans out, we'll all see just how poor this draft class was. When Dorsey said he only thought about 15 players had first round grades, I saw things exactly the same way.
So where that left teams in the NFL was a quite a few players that had second round grades. After those players I felt the talent level fell off the cliff.
That's exactly why I think we saw Dorsey draft players in the third, fourth and fifth rounds that fans scratch their heads at. Because the class was so poor that projections may give you better results than anything.
The talking heads hit on obvious players. Beyond that they don't have a clue. I think we'll see just how poor they are after Mayock shows his cards in Oakland after a few years. I think Oakland/Las Vegas will be a dumpster fire.
I've looked in depth to see why he fell as far as he did and I just can't come up with anything tangible with which to point to.
I'm just looking at this kids coverage skills, size and speed, and look at where we drafted him. And as you mentioned, we drafted him at #46. At that pick I think the kid was a great value with all the tools to have great upside.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Pretty sure Dorsey was starting off the press conference being cheeky about trying to move up.
"...that's why today we were trying to race up here, and uh, you know, speed this thing up here a little bit. Uh, we didn't get to where we want..."
He also mentioned they had started to try to move up some six spots earlier after Greedy was not taken in the first 5 picks of round 2.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that he kind of comes off as a momma's boy, and she seems to be, from some of the things I've read, a helicopter mom. She may have been the driving force for him sitting out the bowl game.
I'm not saying that any of that is necessarily bad, but I can see how some teams could see it as a negative. Not being all macho all the time is just somewhat atypical in football ,and, for some reason, "old school" scouts/GMs can see it as a red flag.
I think he has enough dog in him to be fine. Some people are better at separating football (and the associated aggression) from the rest of their lives than others.

Obviously Greedy's game and/or attitude has some warts, but we just hope that his upside will overcome those
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I get that it. There's a lot of speculation in an attempt to explain Greedy sliding to us a 49. In the absence of concrete information, the tendency is to fill the void with stuff.
I didn't follow him through the draft process closely since I didn't think the Browns could pick him. But I never heard once from a credible draft analyst that his mother was problematic. I think his decision not to play in a bowl game is a business decision. Same with standing on his combine results. The risks in either case, of injury out weights potential gain in draft stock.
Actually, it could be said that the potential risks of dropping due to injury is much riskier than a drop for not playing or testing. Especially at the Corner position. Your wheels are your paycheck, so to speak.
Also, when pressed about William's tackling, Dorsey ultimately responded that coverage was a priority over tackling.

"there are questions about his willingness to tackle and about his fluidity in coverage." I don't know that there are tackling issues, but I do know that any questions about his fluidity is utter nonsense. He's one of the most fluid corners I've ever seen, he sticks like glue and has a wide radius. I don't know why he fell, but I couldn't be more thrilled. If we had taken him at 17 I'd still be happy. If there was one guy I wanted opposite of Ward, it's him. I didn't think we'd get him, so I was kind of hoping we'd make a run at Deandre Baker (before the trade for OBJ). My first and second choice in this draft in the first round was Devin White & Ed Oliver, (hoping one of them might fall to us at 17 or we'd trade up for one of them) but my third hope was Greedy. I'm amazed we got him and couldn't be happier, and I don't really care why he fell. JMHO

You know, a lot of these rumors about different players are put out by the teams hoping a player might drop to them. All I know is the kid ran a 4.37 forty and is 6'2. He started for a top-notch team and played very well against elite competition at LSU. Seems like he's worth the chance to me.

If I recall he pretty much shut down Metcalf who has size speed and strength to spare. That's a notch on his belt for toughness.

I wonder if people take the time to read the thread, including all the articles, before they challenge assertions?
There are a ton of fabricated posts on this board, but Greedy's tackling and shoulder injury aren't two of them. The articles, tweets, etc are right here to see on this thread. Posters aren't pulling those stories out of their butt.

I haven't seen anything that tells me he's unwilling to tackle. If he's had a shoulder injury and was favoring it as a business decision, I would completely understand that decision, but it's not something I've personally seen, and there's certainly a big difference between that and being "unwilling". In fact, from what I've seen, and admittedly I haven't seen everything, he's been very willing to lay the wood, and has taken on running backs and finished strong. So when posters regurgitate a supposed "fact" about a player simply because it's something they've heard or read somewhere, I'm admittedly curious about the source and the validity of that source because for all I know it's just some writer or talking head chirping to create drama or cast aspersions.

I can't find anything on the shoulder injury that you said I posted. NFL Draft: Cornerbacks – No. 1, Greedy Williams ByBILL HUBER Apr 25, 11:56 AM https://247sports.com/nfl/green-bay-pack...iams-131511418/GREEDY WILLIAMS, LSU (6-1 7/8, 185; 4.37 40; 1.51 10; DNP shuttle; DNP 3-cone; 36 vertical; 31 1/2 arms; 9 1/4 hands) The resume: Andraez “Greedy” Williams burst onto the scene with an SEC-high six interceptions and 16 passes defensed in 2017 and added two interceptions and 11 passes defensed in 2018. With that, it was off to the NFL for the native of Shreveport, La. “Not many make it out,” his mom said. “It seemed like every day somebody was killed ... lots of drugs and shooting. I could go on and on.” The decision to turn pro wasn’t just for his lifelong family but his new family, which includes baby Khloe Williams. The seeds of the cornerback’s early entry to the NFL were sewn during the 2018 draft, when ESPN’s Mel Kiper proclaimed Williams a first-round prospect for 2019. “That was crazy,” said Williams’ stepfather, Lonnie Bryant. “Mel Kiper? What is this? It’s real now.” Williams plays a good game. He talks one, too, whether it’s impersonating Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham’s Superman celebration or his domination of touted Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf. “He was tapped out. Like, I’m done. He was focused on making me shut up, but you ain’t gonna make me shut up. Even if you catch a ball, I’m gonna make you say it was lucky.” For Williams, his love of “pootball” started when he was 5, when he saw some kids playing a game in the projects of Shreveport. It changed the family. Soon, Williams and his older brother, Rodarius, started playing the game. His mom, Lakesha, changed her partying ways and started dating the kids’ youth coach, the aforementioned Bryant. Bryant was the family’s ticket out of the projects and into the suburbs. “It’s tough for a kid to grow up in, I can tell you that,” Williams said. “Seeing weed and drugs. Bad neighborhood, but I had my mom keep me on the right track and not let me get caught up. She kept me into sports and all that stuff to help my mind focus on that type of stuff and not the other stuff.” Oh, and about the nickname. “My aunt kept me for a night and I guess my mom didn’t fix enough bottles ahead and so my Aunt named me ‘Greedy-Deedee’ but my mom took the Deedee out and kept it Greedy. I love it. They say it’s a great DB name. It helps to be greedy as a defensive back.” Lakesha Williams is a cancer survivor. Rodarius Williams is a starting cornerback for Oklahoma State. The good: Williams has what can’t be taught, and that’s height and speed. As a pure cover corner, Williams is the best in the draft. He’s got excellent ball skills, the speed to match any receiver and a patient style that allows him to snuff out double moves. Williams excelled in press coverage. He had dominant production throughout his career. According to Pro Football Focus and its best guess on coverage responsibilities, Williams allowed a 39.2 percent catch rate and 42.5 passer rating for his career. “They’re going to get a guy who works hard, a guy dedicated to winning, definitely put the team first, always grew up playing football, get a man who know the responsibility who wants to come in and have a big impact on the team.” The concern: Williams lacks physicality. He’s going to be a liability against the run and is going to have all sorts of problems against big guys like Julio Jones. “That’s something I can improve, definitely going to improve on it, ready to get back on the field and get started working on it,” he said of his tackling. While Williams is tall, he’s not long; his arms are shorter than average. The quote: “No doubt, film don’t lie, I am the best.”

Williams lacks physicality. He’s going to be a liability against the run and is going to have all sorts of problems against big guys like Julio Jones. Yeah, okay. That makes it real. Grateful, I know this isn't your opinion that you simply posted the article, so to be clear my post isn't directed at you. It's directed at Bill Huber and guys like him. I'll make my own judgments about Greedy's physicality and willingness to tackle because so far I haven't seen it. If Greedy and the coaches see that as a weakness in his play, I'm sure it's something they will work on. It certainly sounds, from Greedy's comment in the article, that he's willing to put in the work. Personally, I think it's much ado about nothing. He completely handled DK Metcalf, and that is a physical dude. JMHO

No reason to be afraid to post, it's simply a discussion. I've read the knocks on him, and I've seen plays where they could be construed as either lack of effort, poor technique, or just a good offensive play, and I understand if you have concerns.
My curiosity had to do with the sources, not your opinions of them, and maybe your concerns have foundation. At this point, he's a very young, immature player that I'm sure will benefit from coaching and the culture being built here. My opinion is that we got a very, very good player. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Well, I respect guys like Louis Reddick. He was a DB in the NFL. He even played for the Browns. He was a scout in the NFL and a Director of Player Personnel.
There are other credible folks who have questioned his tackling. Hell, even Freddie and Dorsey addressed it.
Additionally, Greedy was rated as the number one corner for most of the year by the same guys you are dissing, yet seven other corners were taken before Greedy.
Why do you think that is? Because of sport's reporters takes or a real concern?
But again, I think getting Greedy w/the 46th pick isn't a bad thing. It might even turn out to be a very good thing.

Things seem to be pretty mum on Greedy's shoulder injury. I can't find too much about it anywhere. Someone must have some intel. I had originally recalled reading that he injured his shoulder in spring but it was no longer a concern come football time. Edit: could not find a link to this... This is the only link I could find about an injury in the few moments I searched... Greedy Injury

To be clear, I'm not dissing anyone, I was asking about the sources. For all I know, Huber was parroting someone he read. I realize Greedy fell, but we don't really know why and it's futile to speculate. I believe one of the LSU coaches said Greedy was the best CB to come through LSU (ie DBU), that is also credible and carries weight if we're going by analyst opinions. We have to trust Dorsey, right? His is the only decision that matters, right? A couple things I think you'll like about Greedy: his speed, his "mirroring", his ability to get his head around, and his range. I'd like to see what you think at the end of the season.

Yeah, who knows? That article was in August, hard to believe it affected his season.

Happen to know by chance if his tackling issue was only this past year (2018) Or was it always an issue? I know I heard some say he was saving his body/health to go pro, so wasn't mixing it up or trying as hard...But if it has always been an issue, then I can say that can be an even bigger issue...I only have seen the guy a few times, and honestly didn't focus...Nor do I know anything of his history. I was just surprised to hear "character concerns" when I never knew of any red flags with him...and CBS didn't say much, or if they did I didn't catch it. I will be first to openly admit I thought greedy was a little overrated...But at 46th overall, I never thought anyone would land him that late....let alone us. We are finally due a great season, and I can't wait to see us finally contend for our division.

I thought I already said I liked those things? Please don't act like a few other posters on here and misrepresent my points. Greedy has a lot of strengths. He is a good shadow guy and that is very important. I don't see the lack of fluidity that was mentioned. I think his hips are fine. I think he has good instincts and makes a nice break on the ball. He gambles a bit and that be feast or famine, but I'm high on his coverage skills. I have only questioned his tackling and his attitude and I only did so after connecting some dots. I haven't studied this draft and do not claim to be an expert on it. My earlier questions were designed to create meaningful conversations about some of the concerns instead of drawing lines in the sand.

I'm not misrepresenting anything, I was simply pointing out things I think you'd like, sorry if I missed your earlier post about it. I'd still like to read what you think at the end of the year. Have a good night.
