Iran tried to shoot down US Reaper drone that arrived on scene of oil tanker attacks: officials

Iran fired a missile – but missed – at an American drone on Thursday after the supposed Iranian attack on oil tankers, while another U.S. drone was shot down by Iran-backed rebels in Yemen in recent days.

A senior U.S. official told Fox News that an MQ9 Reaper drone was fired on by the Iranians on Thursday shortly after it arrived at the scene where the MV Altair tanker sent out a distress signal amid the attacks the U.S. says were perpetrated by Iran.


The official said the first distress call from the MV Altair tanker, a Marshall Islands-flagged but Norwegian-owned crude oil tanker, went out at 6:12am local time. The unmanned MQ9 Reaper drone arrived 8 minutes later.

Then at 6:45am local time, a missile was fired at the drone, but missed. The U.S. military said that it was a modified SA-7 fired from Iran’s mainland. It was fired on after the drone arrived on station to assist the Norwegian tanker.

Officials also told Fox News that a U.S. MQ9 drone was shot down in Yemen by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in recent days.

From my perspective, a war with Iran would be extremely foolish.....The Iranian regime is a Shiite stronghold.....and a differing set of beliefs from the Sunni Kingdom of Saudi Arabia....and I believe ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban were all extreme Sunni views...So Iran has a vested interest in the destruction of these terror boogiemen we've all been force-fed the past 20 years....I believe that the Iranian state actively hunts any members of these movements within its borders....

So removing Iran would remove a powerful force from a huge chunk of territory.

In addition, the power vacuum would only add to the chaos and disorder in the middle east, and create more lawless, and frequently volatile arena's for extremists to use for recruitment, training, and fighting....

And finally, Iran is a much more powerful nation than Iraq....they have more funding, and a much larger, better trained, and more adequately equipped armed forces....

It would be a nasty conflict.....and this isn't even considering any geopolitical consequences that might reverberate out of an American led attack on Iran....It could escalate to a world war if Iran's allies in Russia or China become involved....

Its a terrible idea that would come at a terrible cost, and for what? To try and marginalize the influence of one of the largest power players in the region?

Its misguided and stupid...

And if Iran forcefully shuts down the worlds oil supply by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, you would let it slide?

Rep. Adam Schiff. D-Calif., often a harsh critic of President Trump, agrees with him on one thing: Iran was behind the bombing of two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz last week.

The Islamic nation has denied responsibility for the attack, but Trump and his administration were quick to point the finger at them. While the president has been accused of prematurely reaching conclusions after past attacks, Schiff and Trump are on the same page this time.

"There's no question that Iran is behind the attacks," Schiff said on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday morning. "I think the evidence is very strong and compelling. In fact, I think this was a class 'A' screwup by Iran to insert a mine on the ship. It didn't detonate. They had to go back and retrieve it. I can imagine there are some Iranian heads rolling for that botched operation."
