While some farmers, mostly minority farmers wait for their gov’t farm money and aid......”The second installment of trade aid is being modeled after the one last year. USDA pledged up to $12 billion in assistance for 2018 production, mostly in the form of direct payments to farmers stung by retaliatory duties, as well as commodity purchases.”.............

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/05/15/trump-administration-farmer-aid-1446165

https://www.ewg.org/agmag/2017/03/real-farm-subsidy-scandal-usda-s-legacy-racial-discrimination

”The true scandal is that farm subsidies still overwhelmingly flow to white farmers – despite decades of U.S. Department of Agriculture discrimination that ultimately resulted in a landmark civil rights settlement.

But will the Senate Agriculture Committee ask former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue – who once energized white voters by promising a referendum on flying the Confederate flag – for his plan to address the USDA’s history of racism in his confirmation hearing to lead the agency Thursday?

For many years, the USDA systematically favored white farmers by denying or delaying loans to Black farmers. As a result, the number of Black farmers fell from a peak of nearly 1 million in 1910 to about 36,000 today.

As a 1994 report commissioned by the USDA itself said, “minorities received less than their fair share of USDA money for crop payments, disaster payments, and loans.”

The 1994 review found that the largest 1 percent of USDA loans went to white male farmers. Loans to Black male farmers were, on average, worth 25 percent less than those given to white males. And 97 percent of disaster payments went to white farmers, while less than 1 percent went to Black farmers.”

Trump is the most entertaining President of all time. You can really expect nothing from him, yet he still finds a way to deliver.

I agree he is the most entertaining. The problem is the ticket price that comes with the show.

He's the biggest embarrassment I've seen to our country I can remember in my lifetime. He's done more to embolden fascism in our nation than any time since I was a child.

No, I was born in 1958. I remember George Wallace running for president however.

Serious question in regards to this sentence from the second article. Not that expect you know the answer, but more of a general thinking out loud type question.

"Most farmers, regardless of race, support those reforms – after all, most subsidized farmers annually receive less than $10,000 from subsidy programs. But, such reforms are violently opposed by farm lobbyists – many of whom receive farm subsidies themselves and virtually all of whom are white."

Who are these lobbyists? if most farmers support reform, but lobbyists don't, then that means the lobbyists are not farmers, so who are they, and what are their interests in the farm subsidies.

Pit, I know you're talking about the current bail out money.

I know farmers that get gov't. money every year in subsidies, and have for decades. Some are big farmers. 2,000 to even 4,000 acres, owned.

I used to have a website I visited occasionally that detailed the subsidies. You could search by name and see how much federal money these farms got over say, a 10 year period. For the bigger guys, $150,000 to $200,000 a year wasn't uncommon. Apparently the subsidies are/were based on the acreage owned.

It was helpful for me to know both the husband, and wife's names, as well as names of other farms owned by them. I could look up, say, John Smith, and see what his farm got. Then look up his wife's name and 'her' farm, and see what she got, then look up, say, Ross Farm, and see what they got (owned by the same people, just named a different name) etc.

And these are, for around here, BIG farmers. The types that don't do much farming - as in being in the field. They have 1, or 2 $700,000 combines, tractors and equipment worth 5, 6, 700,000 dollars.

And under the same program, some, even billionaires that own ground around the country, got money. Even corporations.

There is no 'perfect' subsidy program, sadly.

And this has been going on for decades.

Shoot, I know a guy that owned 40 acres of farm ground. He didn't farm, and didn't lease it either - but he got paid by the federal gov't. to not farm it. He only had to mow it twice a year. A neighbor has 3 acres - and he gets a check. I think it's called the CRP program. And, they get close to the same price as if they'd leased or rented the ground.

It's stated that it is for wildlife protection.

https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4736044

What's that saying? Oh yeah, follow the money. It's been going on for a long time.

Well that's okay then. All well and good that Trump's tariffs on China are costing consumers in the USA AND we now get to pay $20B in subsidies to the farmers ... I mean after you said "what about" it all fell into place for me.

Farms subsidies are actually used to help stabilize the cost of food to ensure that farmers make money for farming. It has recently been spun as a conservation effort.

If you look at who the welfare kings and queens are in today's economy, it's largely farmers.

i love it when conservatives want to call out people on welfare, when these farmers are getting paid to NOT grow crops. the heartland has turned into a welfare region.

rofl Competent fascists? Reagan was ravished by Alzheimer’s and didn’t even know where he was half the time. While Wallace started gerrymandering in his state and was a raging racist on steroids spewing hate most the time. Nether of which I would have considered fascists like trump and his flock though.

You’re right, trump is a moron. I really wasn’t talking about trump in my reply, so I probably missed something else posted. Pretty hard to take things seriously around here when people are calling Reagan and Wallace competent fascists so I just spewed my 2cents.

Well arch, I get what you're saying. For years some in my family who lived in the south were paid not to grow tobacco.

But what we're talking about here are billions of dollars in added subsidies that have been directly created by the use of tariffs. Trump's very own Farm Welfare Program.

Yeah he was? He literally the only President post Nixon to get most of his stuff thru. He's pretty much created every crisis this country has had in the past 20 years as well as some that have not yet happened. He wasn't incompetent, and he didn't even develop Alzheimers until his 2nd term.
