10-year-old girl from El Salvador died in US custody last year, a previously unreported case that brings to six the number of migrant children known to have died after being detained by border authorities in eight months.
The girl had a history of congenital heart defects and died in September at a hospital in Nebraska, officials say.
Her name, when and how she had entered the US have not been disclosed.
Meanwhile, Democrats have demanded an investigation into the deaths.
President Donald Trump has vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border amid an increase in the number of people trying to cross the frontier in recent months.
He has repeatedly criticised Democrats for their opposition to his plans on immigration and declared a national emergency in February to bypass Congress and appropriate funds for a border wall.
What is known about this case?
The girl entered the care of an Office of Refugee Resettlement facility in San Antonio, Texas, in a "medically fragile" state on 4 March 2018, Mark Weber, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), said in a statement. The HHS provides care to unaccompanied minors.
Following an unspecified surgical procedure, complications left her in a comatose state, he added. After her release from hospital in May, the girl was sent to a nursing facility in Phoenix, Arizona, for palliative care.

On 26 September, she was transferred to a nursing facility in Omaha, Nebraska, to be "closer to her family", Mr Weber said. She died three days later due to "fever and respiratory distress".
Officials are not required to announce the deaths to the public.

As I read the article, somebody put a 10 year old girl with a congenital heart problem on a 1500 mile journey through adverse conditions with almost no resources, to try to get her into the United States. She may not have even had any family adult supervision with her. And she passed right through a country that has universal healthcare to try to get here... and it was too much for her.

It's tragic for her and the family but I do not see this one as a failure of the system.

When? Where? From my understanding no child had died in a decade prior to 2018. So I would certainly like to see some source to back up your statement. It could simply be due to the fact they were released much sooner so the deaths did occur, but very soon after they were released.

Now unlike some, I don't blame Trump. At least not directly. But when you have a drastic policy change and deaths occur as a result of those policy changes, it's obvious that there is some correlation. I think the biggest problem is that Trump makes policy based on emotions. Out of a desire to appease his base. As such the ramifications of those policies and the long term consequences are not well thought out.

From tariffs to separating families, some of the consequences and the way things actually work don't seem to matter nearly as much as the optics of them.

Well we do disagree about one thing here. I don't believe anyone is trying to kill immigrant children. But one thing I am sure of. They didn't foresee the ramifications of the consequences of what those policies would cause. And these deaths are tied into making rash, emotional policy changes without considering the results.

I didn't say that...not even close. I wrote about the influx right now being higher than ever before...as in the moment...not in combination of anything. The rush is breaking resources like never before.

Do you realize that DACA is the policy that is driving people to take their children here illegally? Illegal immigration has always been illegal. If cracking down on illegal immigration (finally) suddenly becomes the impetus for illegals to rush the border, then we need to stand ready to enforce the law.

To pin the crisis on Trump is silliness. The problem has existed for decades...Trump is the ONE guy who is trying to fix it. Clinton, young Obama, Hillary, Biden every one of them are on record stating that illegal immigration must be stopped. Speech fodder as they had no intention of doing a darned thing about it.
