This is not an attack or trolling. I'd just seriously like to hear what everyone thinks (trumpians included) the future of the GOP will look like after Trump is gone. Some alt-right/far-right think there will be a Trump dynasty of the Presidency being handed down to Ivanka then Jr. Some conservatives think the party will return to the old norms. Some think the party will collapse or implode in the aftermath.

Personally I think there will be a long rule by the left that will be countered by a return to true center right conservatism without the religious and racist far right. I look for the far right and evangelicals to form two new subgroup republican parties like the libertarians. I don't think they will play a role in party leadership after Trump.

So tell me how you see it playing out, or what you fear or hope for in the next version of the GOP.

I think they will be moderate, like usual.

The GOP is in a tough spot... the far right has done everything they can to alienate the party moderates by labeling anybody a "RINO" who dares think for themselves and not follow every extreme alt-right position... and the moderates don't want anything to do with the racist/radical components of the far right...

I don't know how it can be saved, it would take just the right person to walk the line between the two to find enough common ground to get mass support. I'm also not sure, under current conditions, if it should be saved. Donald Trump was elected, in large part, because enough moderate republicans held their nose and voted for him out of party loyalty or dislike of Hillary... I'm not sure how many would be willing to do that again.

I honestly think, that if you are right and the Dems take control for a while, that the counter will be largely based on them... if they govern from moderate left, then a moderate right counter would probably be effective.. if they go hard left, which it appears they are doing, the counter will be equally hard right... and the more moderate Repubs will have a decision to make.

I can only go on what I know and think...last summer I was home for my nephew's wedding. My uncle and I were talking about my father...this is my uncle who has never voted anything other than R...he told me my father's views (alt right) scared the heck out of him. I know his views scare the heck out of me.

This being said, I think the alt right is a small sub-set of the right and agree that the GOP will be more moderate when Trump is out of the White House.

While we agree on the repercussions of what will happen if the far left takes control, we disagree on the party as a whole leaning that direction.

You could be correct that they are. But when one looks at both sides of the media, the squeaky wheel gets greased first. The people who make the most shocking headlines are what get the attention.

While people may disagree on their like and trust of Biden, and while few really know much about Mayor Pete, there's really no legitimate question that both are considered moderate Democrats. For a complete unknown Mayor Pete has done pretty well and Biden leads in almost every state.

It's still very early but when looking at the field, it seems moderates are fairing pretty well thus far. At least there's hope.

I think the left will split into two parties, the moderates and the socialists. They are already divided as evidenced by the previous election and susbequent results. And 2020 is shaping up to be more of the same.

I would love it if this happens. The wacko far far left could just drift off into the ozone and we would be left with people that want to do something for America.

I think there are wackos on the extreme in both the right and the left. Alt-right really scares me though.

I think this regime has polarized the US so much that I think it's really going to be difficult to find common ground anymore.

I hope that both the GOP and the Democrats become more moderate so that we have some good choices for the 2020 election. I'm not holding my breath.

IMHO 2020 is a simple choice, the lesser of two evils this time is 100% NOT Trump! And that is why I asked this question, not to have another thread with party lines but a real discussion that will be had rather we talk about it or not. The GOP has become the party of Trump and cast down many of its age old values in exchange for a cheap win. I don't see how you come back from that after Trump is gone.

Love the immature labels you pin on opponents. Fits like a glove in the elementary level trumpian era we find ourselves in.

Anyways, honest answer to your question ....Michelle O. would win this thing easily.

1) I don't see the alt-right as having nearly the size nor influence that many on the left perceive. The bulk of Republican party is more moderate.

2) There are a few names that have bounced around regarding presidential runs, but one of the most impressive is the freshman representative out of Texas, Dan Crenshaw (the guy with the eye patch.) He's young, dynamic, intelligent, and articulate with a sense of humor. He has developed a style of presenting info and opinion in a straight forward yet friendly manner. And, of course, he's a decorated ex-Navy Seal who lost his eye in combat. He's a rising star in the Republican party, and if he can avoid the many pitfalls of political life, has a bright future.

edited to add:I also think President Trump isn't alt-right. He's pretty far right, further right than I am for sure, but the alt-right crowd are frigging lunatics. They like him more than he likes them.

If it wasn’t for trump the alt right wouldn’t even be a talking point it is today. trump has emboldened these lunatics. Educate yourself bro. Take a look at the hate crime increase over the last two years.

Trump agrees with AOC after Dem warns of 'very real risk' president will be re-elected in 2020

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., warned Sunday there is "very real risk" President Trump will win re-election in 2020, sparking a rare response of its kind from the president: "I agree."

Well, to hear Trump tell it, His supporters will not stand for him losing the election. So once he wins, they will move to have term limits of the President set aside and he'll be president until his death....

Oh please. I heard the same thing from the Republicans when Odummy was in office. Then I heard Hillary ask Trump if he would accept the outcome if he lost the election. Her and Al Gore didn't take their own advice.

After Trump, there will probably be some Other non politician to come along and "get" republican values, Maybe Tesla.

Well, which one is willing to write you the biggest check?

Are you eligible for black reparations? gay reparations? native American reparations? do you have student loans you'd rather not pay back? do you have credit card debt you'd rather not pay back? Do you work for minimum wage and would like a big raise?

Your vote is for sale, negotiate the best deal for yourself.

Rather that than money continuously funded for wars in the Middle East by republicans and their military industrial complex.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
