I better clarify something.

I am NOT saying that I think Baltimore is better than us. I think we should overtake them this year.

I was initially responding to the claim that Baltimore is all fluff and hype and I took the liberty of assuming that meant that we are the team of substance.

I am not knocking that opinion. It's an opinion in a football conversation. I just believe that we are actually the team that is being hyped while Baltimore has actually won on the field.

I think that will change this upcoming year, but I don't think it is right to claim it before it happens.

Vers - I knew exactly what you meant, and I agree w you. If I came across differently, I apologize. That was not my intent.

I also think we will pass them this year, I actually think we take the North. It's not just hope, I think we can do it.

No, you didn't come across that way. I just liked your post and chose to respond to it. I probably should have put "j/c" but I thought you made a lot of good counter points.

I like honest debate like that w/out all the stupid insults that accompany most disagreements. I think you, Diam, Purp, etc all have good points. There isn't much going on right now and it's something to talk about.

This link goes into some detail about how committed the Ravens are in tailoring the offense to Lamar.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2841...ing-to-find-out

I lived in Atlanta when Vick was drafted. At first like Griffin he set the NFL on fire. But things changed quickly.

I don't see Lamar as being better than either Vick or RG 3.

The Ravens season is riding on how well this will work.

I see mixed results and struggles.

Lamar Jackson is simply not a legitimate pro quarterback.

End of story.

So it was their run game and Defense and yes he was part of their run game but once we stopped the run we took over in the 2nd half anyone could see his athletic ability and also his lack of skill in the passing game superconfused

General Reply,

It's not that I disagree with you that we seemed to figure them out and shut them down... and that the Chargers seemed to be taking notes and picked up right where we left off.

It's just that the Browns were so bad for so long, it's going to take more than 1 or 2 good offseasons for me to confidently state that we've arrived, and are here to stay. I like darn near everything KJ has done since he's stepped into the building. I like Freddie, but he simply hasn't been an NFL head coach yet. I like what Baker did last year, but he still has a way to go. I like the talent that we've brought in for both sides of the ball, but how long will it take for them to mesh. Our Oline....

Similar but opposite... how many times have we been told that the Ravens and Steelers are going to fall on hard times? They have seemed to find a way in the past. I guess I kinda disagree with people's prognostications that they will fade this season. I get their arguments that, on paper, they each got worse, but they've found a way in the past so there's really no reason to think they won't do so this time. I'm happy I'm excited for my Brownies for all the reasons you guys have listed out, just not ready to crown anyone.

While I have no idea who will win the north this year, but one thing is always overlooked in our division. As bad as the Browns have been for decades, it has given Pittsburgh two division wins every year. Baltimore and Cinci were also guaranteed at least one division win each year.

How many times have Pitssburgh won the division by one or two games? How many times have they made the playoffs with 11 wins?

The reason I bring this up is to show that the complete incompetence our team has show for years has also gave these two teams easy access to the playoffs and division wins. If Pittsburgh don't sweep us yearly, there would have been a few years where their playoff hopes would have been stifled.

If the Browns improve enough to at least split with both these teams, their perceived consistent continuity of dominance will be hindered.

Think of it, without the futility of both the Browns and Bengals over the years, neither team would be perceived as the powerhouses they are today.

JMHO

I think the original post is pretty naive.

The Ravens offense will likely be the most difficult to contain of all the teams we play. Any mess up could cost you 6 because of all the athleticism their offense has.

Its Naive to think that. You are obviously showing a lack of experience, wisdom, or judgment.

The Ravens were 6-1 last season...Lamar just did not lose games although he tried his best.

The Ravens ran over most teams an incredible achievement.

Stats...he was terrible as a QB but overcame a lot with his running ability. Not hard to use Stats with Lamar and back up the premise he is not a good QB.

Defense in the history of the NFL have been able to figure it out. If they can somehow figure out Mahomes, a real QB...I don't see it being that difficult to figure out Lamar.

I have mixed thoughts about what the Ravens are doing.

On one hand, I wouldn't want to build my QB room like they have. I much prefer having Mayfield. However, if I were going to do it, what the Ravens are doing does make sense. Jackson is the starter, and RG3 and McSorley also both have the athleticism to run the same scheme.

It never made sense to me to have a mix of traditional dropback throwers and mobile/zone read guys. Roster size and practice time are limited. It makes so much more sense to have guys who can just step right in and play. This is especially true with how the Ravens used Jackson-- featuring him heavily as a runner-- late in the season. He's going to get banged up at some point and the next guy should be able to step in and play a similar way. So I can see what they are doing in that respect.

Greg Roman is their new OC. Perfect guy to bring in. He coached Kaepernick in SF and Taylor in Buffalo. The running game was dominant in both cases. You have to understand how the QB factors in the zone read.

It's not just that the QB can keep the ball and break it outside if the unblocked edge defender crashes in on the RB. It's also that the offensive line gets better angles on the D-line, linebackers have to think instead of react since they don't know who is going to end up with the ball, the defense often has to bring another defender into the box which simplifies coverages, and so on. The running game becomes more effective and backs can put up huge numbers in this environment.

It's not a gimmick. It's not like the defense can just 'figure it out'. It's a solid scheme. For the reasons discussed above, it's actually a better scheme in theory. The problem teams have run into in practice have been that QBs who have the combination of athletic ability, throwing ability, and durability are exceedingly rare. You can partially solve that durability issue by having a QB room stocked with guys who can run the scheme. Athletic ability, it's there. It's really throwing ability that is the question mark.

None of these guys are going to run the same offense that Drew Brees does in NO or what have you. That's not even the barometer. The question is more do they have enough throwing ability even with the compromises the defense has to make (discussed above) and that is a difficult question to answer. Can they reliably beat cover 1/cover 0 with one/both safeties in the box?

I'm not sure how it will all play out but that's the excitement of football. I do think our secondary will allow up some flexibility on defense that some other teams won't have in terms of coverages.

All good points Haus - with that said, it's a HUGE risk to have your fragile QB running so much. Vick and Kap seem to be to be infinitely tougher than Lamar - Lamar seems to have a similar frame to RG3 ... the hits, whether minor or glancing or full are going to mount up and slow him down over a season ... and that's not even touching on the NFL figuring a way to slow down the QB run. Last point - Kap, Vick, RG3 - all significantly better at throwing the ball accurately based on what we have seen so far.

Let's face it - the Ravens and Lamar are going to be a really interesting, intriguing and compelling story this year.

Agree that it's a big risk to have a fragile QB running so much. Lamar does have a thin frame and I'm surprised he held up as well as he did that year.

That said, I also think it kind of comes with the territory of drafting QBs with excellent athleticism and mediocre accuracy. What's the point of drafting a guy like that and trying to make a dropback passer out of him? How often does that work? The occasional scramble alone isn't worth it.

Also, to add to your point-- NFL rules are generally very protective of QBs but they have done no favors for zone read QBs. For starters, as a ball carrier, they are treated like a RB and that's perfectly reasonable. The interesting thing happens during the ambiguity of the QB/RB exchange.

The QB is fair game there and for a moment afterward. In practice, this means the defense can tee off on the QB on any shotgun run and ironically enough, it was actually the Ravens who abused this years ago. The Browns, Bengals, and Steelers could just as easily turn this around on them.

Good discussion.

If anyone remembers June Jones. He was introduced to the run and shoot offense by Mouse Davis. He brought the system to the Falcons under Jerry Glanville.

Initial success then the league adjusted and it bombed.

Dan Reeves moved up to the first pick to take Mike Vick. At first he set the league on fire. He had every bit of what Lamar can do with his legs. In addition he could throw it.

I saw a game in Atlanta when Belichick coached the Browns. He put a spy rover on Vick and shut him down.

Lamar and the Ravens will most likely have some success. Keep in mind that they lost key defensive players. And they were league leaders in defense last year. That may not be the case this year. But the league will adapt.

They will figure out what they are doing and the keys that will provide the tells.

If Lamar can not show that he is a true threat in the pass game they will falter. RPO's, "wildcat", run and shoot. These offenses have been seen before. The leagues DC's will adjust.

The risk of injury has been brought up. Lamar does not have a Iron man suit. He is not built to take shots downfield.

This is risk by the Ravens. End the end it may cost a bunch of people their jobs.

It was Romeo who put a spy on Vick - and it worked. Sorry to nitpick.

Memory lose. I went to that game in Atlanta. It was Romeo. But Romeo was at one time DC for Belichick.

This does not sound like they have someone to “step right in” for CJ as has been suggested on here ... it actually sounds like they may not have had even a good plan much less a great one .. maybe that explains why they tried so desperately to keep CJ ...

3. BAL - ILB Vincent Rey works out

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent LB Vincent Rey (Bengals) worked out for the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, June 25.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens need 2018 fourth-rounder Kenny Young to seize the job opened up by CJ Mosley signing with the Jets. 2018 UDFA Chris Board will be third on the depth chart and both are names to remember in deep IDP leagues. If the youngsters are overwhelmed with their new larger roles, the Ravens might have to turn to the street to get a veteran like Rey to stop the bleeding.

——————————————————————————————

There D is going to take at least a step back ... maybe 2 or 3 ... they not only lost him but there also without almost EVERY SINGLE SACK they had last year ...

I’ve read all your replies to me in this thread .... your talking football with me .... i read almost every word u type about football ... once u engage with your posse i might miss some cause i check out at the first whiff ...

Quit being so paranoid with me ... i wasn’t referring to you ... if i was i would have replied directly to u ... 2 - 4 others have made the blanket statement that no matter who they lose they always have someone to step in ... we went more in depth ... u mentioned there replacements ...

I don’t agree with your take ether ... *L* ... here’s why ... before i get to that ...

I believe u mentioned Shane Ray the dude from Denver ... thats not who there talking about in this little blurb to possibly be in the mix to replace CJ .... dude u mentioned was a DT/DE combo in Denver ... i remember that cause i liked him ... i was still watching every game of every week when he came into the league ... he flashed his rookie and 2nd year ... he couldn’t stay on the filed and we haven’t heard much about him lately ... i wonder if the injuries have taken there toll ...

U mentioned him and McPhee if i remember correctly ... u also mentioned a couple youngins with upside ... can’t remember there names .... u could be right on them ...

I’m not worried about McPhee and Ray replacing Smith and Suggs in the sack department ... NOT EVEN CLOSE ... the two youngins u commented on ... i have no clue about ... i’ll Take your word they have upside .... its tough for guys with limited reps even IF they are going to be decent replacements to step right in ... its gonna take these guys time to play up to the level of the dudes there replacing ...

We both agree that Pierce is STUD and a force to be reckoned with ... but the talent around him will make him less affective until the youngins mature and they find a MLBer ... thats best case ....

I do not fear this ravens team in the least .... we have way more talent than them on both sides of the ball IMO ... thumbsup
