How do YOU propose women get paid more??? You know, the topic being discussed right now.
Well, when a team (mens or womens) participates on the world cup, they get paid by FIFA based on where they finish... but they don't get paid directly... the US Soccer Federation gets the whole check and they get to decide how to divide it up, how much to keep, how much to give the players, etc...
the US Soccer Federation is funded by a variety of sources, including deals with their biggest sponsor, Nike, and other corporate sponsors.. I could not find any information on whether the federal government has any role in funding them or not...
But the most simple way for the women to get paid more would be for a company like Nike, in concert with some other big corporate sponsors to say, "We ain't giving you more money unless you pay the women more." Now, they could be cool and say "Look, we are going to give you $X million more this year as part of our sponsorship but only if you guarantee that all of it goes to the ladies"... but there is probably some rule prohibiting that... so back to first option... Nike, woke as it is, holds a tremendous amount of power in this negotiation if they wanted to use it. I don't know if the option exists for the federal government to kick in a couple bucks to pay the women more... in the end, FIFA doesn't care, it's all about the US Soccer Federation...
I know a lot has been said about pulling funding from the men to give to the women, which is the wrong approach... because growing a successful mens team would be incredibly more profitable in the long run... so that would be a very short sighted approach...
It also has to be considered, by those who bash mens soccer.. that the mens world cup is 90 years old and these countries have been wholly committed to it for a century while we have been committed to about 4 other sports ahead of it... the womens world cup isn't even 30 years old yet and it has been the most popular sport for young girls in this country for a long time.... it only stands to reason that our womens team would be miles ahead of our mens team...
Put another way, we have been invested in soccer as a country for maybe 30 years... that's about how long ago the original dream team went to the Olympics which started the surge in basketball interest around the world... different countries have produced some decent players, but which of those countries has even come close to putting together a team that can compete with Americas best? That's what our mens team has been facing.
