DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF-WRGT)- People filling up across the state before Ohio’s new gas tax increase goes into effect tomorrow. The hike at the pump is 10.5 cents a gallon and even more for diesel.

“People still drive everywhere, it’s a necessary evil,” said driver, Dave Limke.

And that’s how many others feel about the increase starting tomorrow.

“No one wants to pay more for gasoline,” said motorist, Chris Moore. “But, we certainly need to invest in our roads and our streets.”

Governor Mike DeWine signed this transportation bill back in April with just those intentions. This fuel increase expected to generate $454 million dollars for bridge and road improvement projects across the state.

“There’s always work that needs to be done to our roads and it’s got to be paid for somehow,” Limke added.

Drivers in Dayton rushed to fill up one last time without the higher tax. Costco in Centerville experiencing backups from the high demand.

“It’s been backed up probably 8 deep all day in every lane we have,” said Costco worker, Denis Gamble. “Everyone is trying to get filled up before then.”

The tax is expected to cost motorist who drive 15,000 miles a year and get 25 miles per gallon an extra $63 a year. Which some of our followers on Twitter weren't happy about, tweeting, "If the state would use the existing tax money they collect wisely, this wouldn’t need to happen."

Regardless, whether you’re for or against the raise, it goes into effect at midnight.

“I think it is a lot all at once,” said Limke. “It's a little surprising, but I think they are trying to make up for lost time.”

It’s been 15 years since the last gas tax increase. Diesel fuel will also be raised 19 cents per gallon. This bill ends the requirement for front license plates beginning in July of 2020 as well.

Yep. I filled up last night for $2.61 a gallon.

Proper public transportation and more of a willingness to walk or ride a bike would help. I live in an area of town where I can do all of the above and am grateful to have those options. Just last night my wife and I decided to ride our bikes to a bar across town to see some live music and have a couple drinks. It's free and liberating to jump on your bike and ride for 15-20 min to get to where you want to go.

At 2.60 a gal.it will now cost me 7.80 to mow my stupid yard.Time to invest in a herd of goats.
With the added benefit of goat's head soup in the winter.

You're right about the liberating part. I've been bike commuting to work for the past 3 years. I usually do between 10-12 miles in the morning and 3.5 on the way home. I don't do rain, snow/ice and wind chills below 20f, but other than that I ride most days. I'm lucky that I have a fairly safe route with some paved bike path and lockers/showers at work. I feel much more energized on the days that I ride, and the fresh air and wildlife really elevate the mood. It's a rare day that I don't see deer and other critters along the way.

just ran me 62 bucks to fill up on 93 at sam's club. still 20 dollars cheaper than when i had that Ram 1500 crew cab with 87.

I just filled up as I was literally on fumes...cost me $41 and some change to fill a 14 gallon Subaru Forester. Even though we pay more up here in the PNW that is still significantly cheaper than when I had to fill up in the UK! Plus, that full tank should last me 2 weeks as the weather is better and we are driving less (only exception is when I drive out to the boonies to help PortlandDawg on his large scale sculptures).

Yea bro I fear the day we move back to Germany if it happens. My dumbass had a Chevy suburban for a bit out there. 160 dollars for a full tank of gas. I got rid of that thing ASAP.

To address a few things I've seen here...

1. American suburbs were never designed to be walked. We are just now catching onto this phenomenon of including grocery stores and such in (or adjacent to) planned communities. Likewise most also don't have dedicated trails or bike lanes to make riding a bike safe or practical.

2. Gas tax is by gallon, as cars have become more efficient and as more EVs are hitting the road, the money has to come from somewhere. This problem isn't going to be solved by gas alone, though that will drive more folks to EVs.. but as they grow in popularity, at some point they have to chip in for road construction and maintenance... Eventually we will be taxed by mile driven, we almost have to be.

And we are glad you like it. I wouldn't want to live there for anything. Tennessee is just fine for me, though I will be moving to Florida full time next year.

If they use the money to fix roads I'm fine with the tax.
