This actually doesn't bother me at all. I enjoy a good waterpark. I generally have more fun on waterslides than rollercoasters. If they continue to invest and build it up, I could see myself going to it atleast once a summer.

We took the kids there last summer and the waterpark is pretty good. Not as good as water Country in Williamsburgh but still pretty good. I am hoping they dont just stand pat with what they have and make it a world class waterpark.

It was one admission for both parks so we went to the waterpark side for a few hours then got dressed and went over to the roller coaster side but within a hour said hell with it and went back to the waterpark side.

WOW a whopping 70 more minutes.
So instead of leaving the house at 9:40am, you have to leave 8:30am. Someone who wants roller coasters, that isn't a huge sacrifice.

And because of that, Cedar Point is a once or twice a summer trip that takes all day. You could go to Geauga Lake for an afternoon if you wanted.

I literally went to Geauga Lake every two weeks for awhile there, and before I could drive my mom would pick us up once she got off work.

The convenience factor is lost, that's my point.

Yes but you had a season pass probably, and only stayed a few hours, didn't buy alot of concessions, or play the games, etc. So they weren't making money off of you.

So YOUR the reason they are closing.

Somewhat sad to see it closing, I have many memories from Geauga Lake, but we are talking the late 70's early 80's. By the time I was able to drive, I wanted Big coasters and chose to go to Cedar Point.

That kinda sucks. I actually havent been there in a while but I am sad to see it go b/c we used to always go when I was a kid. Remember that guy that rode the Rotor like everyday?

Yes I remember him and remember he used to ride it upside down sometimes?? I always thought it would be hilarious if they slammed on the brakes real quick with the floor still down so he would fall on his head.

That guy was a big YSU fan and you would see him at the games sometimes. You'd be in the middle of a ride and he'd spout off YSU 28 Marshall 14...

Even when Six Flags owned Geauga Lake, it sucked. I live 30 minutes from GL and 90 minutes from Cedar Point, and would hop in my car to head to CP much quicker than I would GL. I am a roller coaster junkie. Geauga Lake CANNOT compete with Cedar Point and couldn't when Six Flags owned them.

As ConArtist said, the parks were way too similar to succeed, especially since CP has better rides. Universal and Disney coexist because they are different parks and cater to different people.

Besides, the director of Cedar Fair announced quite a while ago that he thought he'd have to sell off or do something else with Geauga Lake, because it wasn't profitable (and wasn't, even as Six Flags, why do you think they sold it?) As a waterpark only, I'll probably end up with season passes to GL, especially since Dover Lake's been gone for a bit, and I LOVED Dover Lake. Besides roller coasters, I love water rides next best.

I have not even been able to tell my kids yet. They are going to be so sad with this. We went there about three weeks ago. Thought it was a good bargain. We would go and stay at Geauga lake resort, and for about 160 a night, we would get a sit down breakfast, a night at the hotel, 4 tickets to the park, a parking pass, putt-putt. We would go to breakfast in the morning, jump in the pool for a half hour, go to the ride side of the park till about 1 or 2, then come back to the room, eat and change, go to the water side till they closed at 8, go back to the room and order pizza while the wife took the kids to the pool, ate and then played putt-putt. A hell of a day for the kids.
I did not go there much as a kid, but my wife and in-laws talk so much of when they went there and how screwed up the park was now.
I sorta liked it that it wasn't Cedar Point and it wasn't super busy and it wasn't 2 1/2 hours from home and you could go there for an afternoon if you wanted.

Screw this.

Yeah the coasters arent cedar point, but who's are?. Half the price, half the lines and it was 5 minutes from my moms house. I still thought that suspended roller coaster was a lot of fun and that Batman,(or whatever its called) ride were pretty fun. Geauga lake has been around forever. It was dirt cheap and fun.

I say boo to this . Unless I can drink a beer while floating down a lazy river, i sure as hell wouldnt pay to get into this water park.

jc..

For comparison, we have Busch Gardens Tampa and Disney, Universal Orlando here. They are a little over an hour apart.

Most of the residents on the West coast of Florida goto BG for a day of fun, it's less congested, and cheaper than Disney or Universal, not as many tourists, traffics easier etc.

Now BG has Budweiser behind them and a long history, and they keep adding new coasters and attractions, and they benefit from being in a major metropolitan area, as well as being right off an Interstate.

If I recall Geauga Lake is kinda out there a bit, and while it may be closer for Akron/Canton folks, and such, if your west of GL, your thinking for the same drive time I can goto Cedar Point.

Fact is that as Cedar Point was growing into the mega they have become during the late 80's early 90's, Geauga Lake didn't keep up, and once you lose ground in business like that, it is hard to make it up.

Living outside Ohio, I hear about Cedar Point often, but had no Idea GL or Sea World even existed in any form anymore.

And especially now a days, alot of out of town people want hotel room connected to the park, so they can just run in and out as need be, why do you think Disney has like 17 resorts on their property, and Cedar Point has several as well.

Back in the 60's and 70's when ride technology was pretty simple, and most parks had the same or very similar rides, it didn't matter where you went. But in the 80's when technology advanced rides to new heights and designs, you had to keep up or you get left in the dust as GL did.
