Then he went to Indianapolis, a verbal commitment was made. He could not sign a contract because the Patriots were still in the playoffs. He told them the staff he wanted, the staff was hired. Then after pretty much all decent available coaches were hired, and Indianapolis had set up everything McDaniels wanted, he reneged on his commitment, to stay in New England. Someone's word is his bond; McDaniels has no honor.
Someone who would do that, is not someone I want coaching the team I think of as mine.
Fair if true I guess. But what you described isn't exactly what happened. Imagine you gave a verbal commitment to a new employer. They said you were going to get very good benefits when you start working there. You say ok, I'll come work for you but show me these "very good benefits" before I sign the contract. They hem haw around and finally get back to you and say sorry, the benefits aren't very good, but we still want you to come work for us. You say nope and retract your word. Are you a bad person? This is pretty much what happened with McDaniels when he was dealing with Indy in regards to Luck. This is not what happened. The Patriots gave him the godfather offer to stay because he was wavering.

This is pretty much what happened with McDaniels when he was dealing with Indy in regards to Luck. This is not what happened. The Patriots gave him the godfather offer to stay because he was wavering. or this https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patri...in-new-england/Patriots reportedly gave Josh McDaniels a monstrous contract to stay in New England Apparently, the Patriots really, really, wanted to make sure that Josh McDaniels stayed in New England If Josh McDaniels hadn't pulled off one of the most shocking moves of the offseason and spurned the Colts, he'd be spending the opening week of the NFL season in Indianapolis, getting ready to coach against the Bengals. However, McDaniels isn't in Indy, and that's because he decided to stay in New England. If you need a quick rehash of the situation: Back on Feb. 7, McDaniels decided that he didn't want Indy's head coaching job, even though he had already verbally accepted the job. It was a decision that caused total chaos and eventually led the Colts to hire Frank Reich. Anyway, back to McDaniels. More on the NFL Tom Brady on Eagles stealing the play he dropped in the Super Bowl: 'Good execution wins games' As the story goes, shortly after accepting the Colts job on Feb. 6, McDaniels had a meeting with Bill Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and it was in that meeting where he decided he wanted to stay in New England. So how did the Patriots convince McDaniels to stay.
Well, apparently, there was a lot of money involved. According to NFL.com, to keep McDaniels in New England, the Patriots offered him a five-year deal that made him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL. Although the exact terms of the deal aren't known, we do know that McDaniels will be getting at least $4 million for at least one season in the deal. That's monstrous money for an offensive coordinator. That amount is basically equal to what some first-year NFL head coaches get paid.
Of course, the fact that the Patriots were willing to fork over that kind of money isn't all that shocking and that's because Belichick is a big fan of McDaniels. Back in March, the Patriots coach referred to McDaniels as one of the best offensive coordinators in the league. "I'm thrilled he's still with us and is going to continue in his role," Belichick said, via ESPN.com. "I think he's a top offensive coordinator in the league. He's done a great job for me for a long time in a lot of different roles. I'm very glad, based on the meeting we had -- there were a number of things that happened -- that we were able to work that out and keep him with us." The reason McDaniels spurned the Colts is because he didn't know how badly the Patriots still wanted him. According to Belichick, the two sides didn't really talk about the future until after Super Bowl LII, which was played on Feb. 4 (McDaniels accepted the Colts job on Feb. 6 and then met with the Patriots later that day). "Once that game ended, I think that really gave Josh and I a chance to sit down and talk more directly about the situation, as opposed to, 'We really want to talk about the game and what we need to do to try to compete in that game.' That's basically what happened," Belichick said in March. "Before the game, I'd say we had minimal discussions. I'd say we had much deeper and longer and more in-depth and more constructive discussions immediately after the game." Although McDaniels hasn't been guaranteed the Patriots coaching job when Belichick retires, his new contract definitely puts him in good shape. Belichick will be 71 when McDaniels' deal expires, and at that point, it wouldn't be surprising if the Patriots coach finally let someone else take over.

Patriots take pride in their use of analytics to help scouting Mar 10, 2019 Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots and NFL: 1. New England Patriots president Jonathan Kraft once again spoke on a panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, sharing insight on the role analytics plays for the defending Super Bowl champions. ADVERTISEMENT Kraft was part of the "Creating a Sports Legacy" panel alongside Philadelphia 76ers/New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris and sports agent/president of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee Casey Wasserman, and with such brainpower on stage last week, I learned a lot. One thing that stood out specific to the Patriots is their forward-thinking approach with technology and scouting, and what has resulted from it. Best of NFL Nation • Realistic expectation for Brady at 43? • Bills QB Allen: Must 'find a way' to win • Lessons from grandma still push Henry • Will playoffs determine Clowney's future? • What's at stake for Vikings in playoffs "When we came into the league [in 1994], there were a couple of national scouting services that every team subscribed to, because it was hard to get tape or film on everybody. So everybody was getting the same reports on the same players. You had your own scouts that would go out and look at things, but it made no sense to us, how the most competitive part of this business, you're sharing," Kraft said on the panel, which was moderated by ESPN's Jackie MacMullan. "So we started working on early iterations of a proprietary database. Flash-forward to today, off any mobile device, you can access information about any player on our roster, or anybody we're scouting, analyzed in our system's dynamics, and then tracked once they become a pro even if they're not with us. "What that lets us start to do is see how good our internal scouting metrics were early on. You start to track and see where scouts have strengths and weaknesses. So we know, 'Maybe Scout X, he nails it on receivers. But on D-linemen, he doesn't.' Then you also start to learn things about the players as well ... "Even if the players aren't with us, as we track them at other teams and how they're performing relative to the way we thought they'd perform and what their metrics were, it lets you hone your own analytics." Kraft stressed the importance of technology in helping the Patriots, noting that the franchise is doing more with sleep, nutrition and fitness, among other areas. Later in the panel, Kraft was asked a question from the audience on how he prepares to lead a successful organization that has created an unrealistic expectation of success. "If someone asked me what keeps me awake at night, as it relates to our sports businesses, that would be the question," he answered. "If you're going to have a problem, if we are as described, it's a good problem to have. I think what makes it harder in the NFL ... it's building the team and that's why the personnel tools I was talking about are so important to us. "What keeps us awake at night is how we're going to stay at least at a consistently above-average level -- if not competing for championships -- when the coach and the quarterback who are such important elements of the group that puts a football team together are no longer with us. You just want that culture so strong -- and all the other players and coaches who are there, and all the supporting tools, to be as strong as possible, to have whatever competitive advantage we might have had built into it so you can build off that." Thanks for that posting.. all this talk abut analytics it's difficult to figure out if a Coach is good at old fashion knowing how to coach or having to use analytical thinking.
I'm sure it's nothing new..just new talking about it.

It does sound as if the Patriots went after McDaniels hard before he signed a Colts deal.
There was something else going on that may have played a factor in McDaniels situation with the Colts...Luck had off season surgery in 2017 and missed the entire 2017 season.
Maybe, there were rumors that Luck was considering retirement after the 2018 season. The Patriots may have had some inside sources letting McDaniel know what he was about to get into should he take the Colts job.

so what does this say about Coaches ? do they only want to go where talent makes them look good ? If a Coach wants to Coach and make a team into a winner..then they should coach that team into a winner. If Daffy Duck is the QB of the looney tunes team and they need a coach to beat the Duck on the Steelers team.. I take that job coaching that daffy duck.

At least coaching Daffy and Buggs would be entertaining yes .. If you want to be a head coach, you take the job and do your best .. at least there was a built in excuse to help him him along for a couple years if things went south. It's not as though you drafted a QB in the first round and refused to play him.

I DO NOT want McDaniels, I can't think of any example, other than Vrabel, who have been successful on any level out of the NE family of coordinators, only Bill O'brien has had any real success as an NFL Head Coach, Nick Saban has had success as a college coach but that's a different beast.
RAC, Mangini, Weiss, McDaniels twice, have epic fails as HC's, actually, I'm not sure Weiss was ever a NFL HC? I know he was Notre Dames' HC. at which he was also unsuccessful there.
So, anybody but NE coordinators please. I'm sure that's who we will get, I say give me Stefanski (sp), Roman, McCarthy, or most anybody over any NE coordinator.

Some candidates especially coordinators with no HC experience in the NFL will take a job offered. They want desperately a chance to prove themselves.
But if offered more than one job they will weigh the pros and cons of each.
That is why I started a thread about the competitive opportunities. First consideration is ownership.
Then it is the roster. Because if the talent is not there; you can not win.
And you must win to keep the job.

This is not what happened. The Patriots gave him the godfather offer to stay because he was wavering. Perhaps not exactly. The point being McDaniels "may have" discovered Luck wasn't as healthy as originally thought.

A few things not related to McDanials leap out at me reading this. What a lucid and forward thinking owner Kraft is. Eye and central concern on team culture, exactly what an owner should be focused on.
More importantly... something I have been thinking about with regard to analytics that he confirmed, The first thing analytics shines a light on, before the players actually, is the evaluators themselves! How accurate are they, how consistent, do they have certain biases, are they better at certain positions or player types than others? That alone would be gold for a scout coordinator or GM. With that you can rebias and much more accurately baseline the evaluations. They start looking a lot less like just opinions and more like apples to apples measurements between scouts, years and other variables.

Alternative thought....
All coaches that left teams high and dry went on to extremely successful careers.
-BB w/ the Jets -Parcells w/ the Patriots, I think?
-McDaniels?

you like a guy that has never been even remotely successful outside of NE having the greatest HC and Qb to ever be in the game over a guy thats won 135 games, better record than 95% of the coaches currently coaching, a winning record in playoffs including winning a superbowl? lmao..only in cleveland...fans and owners seem to love them some gambling

Maybe it will cause some to face "reality"...there was no way in hell McCarthy was going to come to Cleveland given the way the Browns continue to operate, firing coaches and GMs every year or so.
When it comes to stability, the Browns have been the most instable franchise in the NFL. I hope the Browns are prepared to move quickly and don't string out their coaching search until all the top candidates are hired by other franchises that are prepared to move.

My only guess would be the guy has an ego that won't quit. Maybe he'll override the common sense that tells him what a horrible position he would put himself into with "Quick Trigger Haslam" as his boss in favor of the boost to his ego turning a miserable franchise around would give him.
That's the only guess I can come up with.

That's who I was referring to. McD seemingly likes the team that's in place here. That or he's tripping on acid.

The only thing about it that matters is McDaniels has fallen on his face when he came out from under BB's skirt. McDaniels second stint with the Patriots has now lasted eight seasons. If he was never a head coach before he would be the clear favorite for all of these jobs. The goal of the interview process should be to examine if he has changed what he will do this time around if he becomes a head coach. If it is determined that he will change many of the things he did in Denver and use it as a learning experience then his failed stint should be viewed as a positive (for the Browns) instead of a negative. McDaniels certainly talks a good game about changing his priorities as a head coach. It will be interesting to see if he actually puts his words into practice if/when he gets a head coaching job.

The thing about a HC is his ability to lead is almost as important as his X's and O's. You have a DC and OC, who if left to do their jobs on game day, can carry the bulk of the X's and O's.
So if people think McDaniels has had a compete personality make over then maybe you have a point.
