Trump addresses World Economic Forum in Davos, touts trade deals, US economy

President Trump on Tuesday addressed the global business community in Davos while his adversaries back home prepared for his impeachment trial.

Trump took the stage and touted his administration's policies for helping create a historic unemployment level and taking a new proactive stance toward trade. He said recent trade agreements will represent a new model for the 21st Century that is based on fairness and reciprocity.

Despite troubles back home, Trump reminded the audience that when he spoke there two years ago he told them that the great American comeback was officially launched.

"Today I'm proud to declare the United States is in the midst of an economic boom, the likes of which the world has never seen before," he said. He went on to vow never to let "radical socialists destroy our economy."

Editorial in Nunes home district paper.

Devin Nunes’ Ukraine lies are a betrayal. Voters in his district deserve better
BY THE SACRAMENTO BEE EDITORIAL BOARD
JANUARY 20, 2020 02:11 PM

/
Duration 1:59Fullscreen
Before joining as City of Sacramento's new cannabis chief, Davina Smith — interviewed Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020 — was deputy county counsel in Solano and Humboldt counties, and deputy district attorney in Humboldt County. BY XAVIER MASCAREÑAS
Kiev, Ukraine, is nearly 6,200 miles from Tulare, Calif. That’s a long way from home for Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Tulare, who now faces explosive allegations that he and his staff contacted shadowy Ukrainian figures in an effort to betray American democracy.

Text messages released by the House Intelligence Committee last week reveal that a top Nunes aide named Derek Harvey – who served on Trump’s National Security Council before he joined Nunes’ staff – sought direct contact with Ukrainian officials in an effort to smear former Vice President Joe Biden. This developing story about Nunes and his staff should raise serious concerns for all Americans.

“An aide to Rep. Devin Nunes exchanged dozens of text messages with indicted Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas about a search for information on former Vice President Joe Biden from Ukrainian prosecutors,” wrote Sophia Bollag of The Sacramento Bee. “The exchanges include repeated references by Nunes aide Derek Harvey and Parnas to Biden. Parnas allegedly helped carry out President Donald Trump’s campaign to pressure the Ukrainian government for investigations that would benefit Trump’s re-election.”

For months, Nunes has acted as Trump’s attack dog, defending the president from accusations that he pressured Ukraine to investigate Biden. Nunes sat in House Intelligence Committee meetings and derided the impeachment proceedings against Trump as a “hoax.” Yet he was sitting on a ticking time bomb the entire time. The newly-released texts prove that Nunes’ staff also engaged in secret efforts to damage Biden.

Nunes knew the Ukraine allegations were true because his office was involved in the same plot. But he used his position in Congress as a platform to spread lies and mislead the public. During an interview with Fox News last year, Nunes denied any memory of a phone conversation with Parnas. Now that evidence has proven that Parnas spoke the truth, Nunes has backtracked. During a Fox News appearance on Friday, he admitted to a call with Parnas but sought to downplay its significance.

OPINION
“I remember that call, which was very odd, random, talking about random things,” Nunes told Fox. “And I said, ‘Great, you know, just talk to my staff,’ and boom, boom, boom. Which is normal, standard operating procedure.”

Oh, really? Nunes hasn’t held a townhall with his constituents in years, yet he expects people to believe his conversation with a now-indicted Ukrainian-American operative was completely normal? We doubt any regular constituent from Nunes’ district would have much luck getting the congressman on the phone. Yet some “random” businessman with Ukraine connections had no trouble reaching Nunes on his cell.

We don’t know exactly what Nunes and Parnas discussed, but Parnas’ texts with Nunes’ aide reveal an incisive focus on using Ukrainian connections to find dirt on Biden. President Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine for a Biden investigation – and Trump’s apparent decision to withhold military aid from Ukraine until its leaders agreed to his demand – sparked his impeachment.

Regardless of whether you lean Democratic or Republican, here’s an undeniable fact: Nunes lied. He lied to the American people and to his own constituents about the Ukraine allegations, dismissing them although he knew they were true. He deliberately misled the American people by attempting to undermine impeachment hearings that examined an anti-Biden effort in which his own office had direct involvement.

Even if you support President Trump, there’s no denying the fact that Nunes’ actions have backfired and will only hurt Trump. Knowing his own staff was neck-deep in an effort to smear Biden using foreign contacts, Nunes should have let someone else play defense. (And if Nunes didn’t know what Harvey was up to, why hasn’t he fired his aide?)

Devin Nunes has betrayed the truth, betrayed the trust of voters and, quite possibly, betrayed our country. We don’t know exactly where this new evidence will lead, or what fate has in store for Nunes, but we do know this: The people of California’s 22nd congressional district deserve better.

'Who the hell cares about the budget?': Trump tears into critics of mounting federal spending and debt under his watch

https://www.yahoo.com/news/hell-cares-budget-trump-tears-184416961.html

President Trump ripped into critics of rising federal spending under his watch, according to leaked audio files of a lavish fundraiser held at Mar-a-Lago on Friday.

"Who the hell cares about the budget? We're going to have a country," Trump said, according to The Washington Post, which published the remarks over the weekend.

The Post reported that he bragged about increasing the defense budget by at least $2.5 trillion, a sum that could be attained after adding several years' of government defense spending. The Pentagon's budget for the 2020 fiscal year totals $738 billion.

Video: How Impeachment Works

He also spoke about the dramatic events surrounding the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani earlier this month and ridiculed environmental concerns, the report said.

The freewheeling comments offer remarkable insights into the president's approach on federal spending and the debt, which barreled past $23 trillion late last year.

Trump campaigned in 2016 on eliminating the federal debt in eight years and reining in the deficit, a key concern of Republicans throughout President Obama's two terms in office. They often accused Democrats of being excessive spenders, which racked up the deficit.

However, Trump veered the opposite direction as president, and Republicans tempered their previous criticism.

The 2017 tax cuts blew up the federal deficit, which neared $1 trillion in fiscal year 2019 — a 26% jump from the year before as it steadily increased every year in office.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will cost $1.9 trillion over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Trump also signed a $1.4 trillion budget in December that boosted defense spending.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan budget watchdog, estimated earlier this month that Trump's spending priorities will pile an additional $4.7 trillion onto the debt through 2029.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

Trump... Conservative in name only. What he really is, a xenophobic manipulator interested only in lining his own pocket. He's incompetent... And can't operate under normal oversight ... Can only rally the base, bully and dictate and divide.

Where are the fiscally responsible Republicans, libertarians and anyone with a brain?

Like I just said, it helps some a lot more than it helps others.

Here's the funny part in all of this. People who "claim to be" conservatives remain silent while the deficit balloons under Trump.

Yet they applaud the stock market boom that 10% of America gets 87% of the benefit and the huge tax cuts which the 1% got the majority of.

He's older, but the point still stands: Pension, or 401k, the majority of the population is invested in the stock market, somehow, some way. Public employees? Invested. Teachers? Invested. They may not even realize it, I know.

Have a 401k? Invested.

I've posted links about the economy ... the DOW ... the S&P ... employment .... unemployment .... dozens and dozens of time. They ALL show that Trump is doing about as well as Obama. Before the recent (last 2 week) rally - Trump was behind Obama on the performance of the stock market -- now I'd bet they are right back to neck and neck again.

Do you know what the Right Wingers say when I post those stats endlessly ..... (((((((((CRICKETS))))))))) ...... Nada.

Cool. On paper, WE (wife and I) are making much more now.

I absolutely understand that could change, and probably will change, as that's how the market goes if you look at yearly returns.

You wanna give O credit? Great. I don't have a problem with that. BUt if you're giving credit, make sure to do it equally.

I do. Trump gets credit for the state of the economy. On the one hand he inherited an economy that was going great .... on the other I give Trump credit for keeping that going because everything is cyclical ... the market will go down at some point.

Hopefully another Tac cut like the last one where 90% of the benefit goes to the 1% .... they need it !!!!!! YAY. TRUMP GOT THIS !!!!! Or maybe Trump needs it to bribe his faithful to vote for him again because they don't pay attention long enough to realize who actually benefits from a Trump Tax Cut.

Actually the really pathetic part of this is how the national debt will only start to matter to the Trump stooges when he is no longer in office. Book it.

America stands on the cusp of a new decade that promises to unfold as the new “Roaring Twenties.” A review of President Trump’s 2019 achievements, building on the successes of 2017 and 2018, provides context for the year and decade ahead, and reasons to expect a resounding Trump reelection next November. Here are my top 10:

Jobs – The stunning recent news on employment proves, more than any other metric, the efficacy of President Trump’s growth doctrine of economic nationalism and the diffusion of power. Defying globalist skeptics from Wall Street, academia, and the corporate media, payrolls surged in America in 2019. The most recent jobs report revealed a plethora of records and extended the wage-growth winning streak to 16 straight months above a 3% pace, a mark seen only three months total during the sluggish Obama years. In addition, the fastest wage gains now flow to those groups that formerly lagged badly in the slow-growth recovery following the Great Recession. For example, the lowest 10% of earners saw income grow at an astounding 7% rate over the last year. Similarly, those without a high school diploma welcomed 9% wage acceleration in 2019.

Broadening the Movement – 2019 represented a seminal breakout year for the America First movement as the Republican Party changes to a workers’ party. This new focus translates, already, into significant signs of ethnic, racial, and geographic diversity for the GOP. For example, a recent CNN poll in deeply blue California reported 32% minority support for Trump vs. current Democratic front-runner Joe Biden. Similarly, recent polls by The Hill and Emerson show Latino approval for the president at nearly 40%. It is difficult to overstate the importance of this kind of minority support, both for politics and, more importantly, for the overall cohesion of our society.

Confronting China – Though a near-term détente in trade tensions was reached, Trump proved to the world in 2019 that tariffs can be effectively deployed to force the Chinese Communist Party into a bargaining posture. The soaring economy in America demonstrated that tough trade policy can indeed coincide with growth.

Trade Deals With Allies – In contrast to the mostly contentious trade chess match with Beijing, Trump proved that America First hardly means America alone. The USMCA was finally ratified by the House of Representatives this year and points to a new era of prosperity with our neighbors as the global supply chain reorients from the Far East back to the Americas. Similarly, a breakthrough agreement was signed with Japan and the new U.S.-Korea trade pact took effect in early 2019.

Judges – While Nancy Pelosi dithers and corporate media obsess over the sham impeachment inquest, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mitchell quietly pile up a historic pace of judicial confirmations. Trump in 2019 secured his 50th federal appeals court judge in only three years, compared to just 55 for President Obama over eight years. Over the long term, remaking the federal judiciary into an originalist, constitutionalist branch of government may create Trump’s most enduring legacy.

Remain-in-Mexico Policy – Our country still needs to drastically reform its inane asylum laws and provide vastly more border wall funding, but nonetheless President Trump found a fair and effective near-term solution for border control by requiring asylum seekers to apply from Mexico rather than trespassing across our sovereign border. Not surprisingly, according to NPR, less than 1% of the economic migrants who apply actually qualify as refugees. Trump’s 2019 move, therefore, provides a deterrent and averted a full-scale crisis at our border.

Mueller Exoneration – Though admittedly not an active achievement, nevertheless the long-awaited Mueller report validated the president on two key topics. First, that no one in the 2016 Trump campaign actively cooperated with Russia or with any other foreign power. Secondly, Democratic Party chieftains such as Rep. Adam Schiff, along with a complicit media, repeatedly fed the public demonstrable lies for years about supposed “proof” of conspiracy.

Al-Baghdadi Killing – The October special forces raid that eliminated the terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proved that America can aggressively hunt down terrorists and dispense with enemies without nation-building and concomitant large-scale troop commitments. Some brave U.S. fighters, along with a terrific dog, highlighted that surgical strikes can protect our homeland without the massive outlays of blood and treasure employed by Trump’s predecessors.

Natural Gas Exports Soar – Early in the Trump presidency, America became a net natural gas exporter for the first time since the Eisenhower administration. In 2019, this trend expanded in earnest, with an astonishing 60% growth rate of liquefied natural gas exports for the year. Establishing America as an energy superpower drives domestic prosperity, particularly in heartland energy regions, and facilitates affordable energy to power the on-shoring manufacturing renaissance that has produced 500,000 new factory jobs under Trump. In addition, American energy dominance benefits the geopolitical security of the entire globe.

Space Force – Establishing the sixth military service branch in 2019 was pure Trump: imaginative, bold, forward-looking, and – predictably – roundly derided by establishment critics. In alignment with his outsider perspective, Trump correctly ascertains the potential of space as a warfighting domain, and that America must dominate there. As satellites increasingly guide the behaviors of our everyday lives, the U.S. Space Force will protect our security and economy far into the future, forming a lasting legacy for this most unorthodox president.

These 10 achievements build a foundation for our nation to flourish in the New Year. In addition, these accomplishments exhibit his leadership skills, in spite of a near-totally obstructionist House of Representatives and a consistently biased media establishment. Such accomplishments make the president the prohibitive favorite to win reelection over an unimpressive Democratic presidential stable of candidates. Looking bigger picture, the first three years of the Trump presidency have established the policy framework and upward momentum for a truly amazing decade ahead – the new Roaring Twenties.
