Christian school expels teen after rainbow sweater and cake were deemed 'lifestyle violations'The student’s mom said the school had given her daughter the book “Gay Girl, Good God," written by an ex-gay, prior to her expulsion. A Christian high school student in Kentucky was expelled after school administrators saw a photograph from her 15th birthday party in which she was wearing a rainbow sweater and smiling next to a rainbow birthday cake. “She was happy. She looked beautiful,” the teen’s mom, Kimberly Alford, told NBC affiliate WAVE of Louisville. “Of course, as a mom, I took her picture blowing out her candles, and I posted that on my Facebook page.” Alford said that shortly after she posted the photo, she received a letter from the head of Whitefield Academy, where her daughter, Kayla, was a freshman. “The WA Administration has been made aware of a recent picture, posted on social media, which demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs,” the letter, signed Jan. 6 by the head of the school, Bruce Jacobson, said. “We made it clear that any further promotion, celebration, or any other actions and attitudes that are counter to Whitefield’s philosophy would not be tolerated. As a result, we regret to inform you that Kayla is being dismissed from the school immediately.” While rainbows can have many meanings — in addition to being a meteorological phenomenon — they’ve served as a universal symbol of gay pride and acceptance since the late 1970s. In a statement shared with NBC News on Wednesday, Whitefield Academy said that the rainbow-filled photo was just the last straw following two years of student code violations. “Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post,” the statement said. “In the fall, we met with the student to give her a final chance to begin to adhere to our code of conduct. Unfortunately, she did not live up to the agreement, and therefore, has been expelled.” Alford said in an interview Tuesday that her daughter had been on probation since October for “some behavioral issues,” including cutting class and being caught with an e-cigarette. She said school administrators, “in a roundabout way,” told her that the probation wasn’t about her daughter’s “sexuality.” However, Alford did say some students were uncomfortable with her daughter’s “perceived sexuality.” The discomfort, according to Alford, led a school counselor to give her daughter the book “Gay Girl, Good God,” whose author, Jackie Hill Perry, is a formerly identified lesbian who claims God stopped her from being gay. Alford said her daughter and the counselor had been meeting weekly to go over the book before Kayla was expelled. In its statement, the school did not address NBC News’ requests for comment about the additional circumstances of Kayla’s probation and expulsion, including the other alleged “lifestyle violations” and the counseling sessions with “Gay Girl, Good God.” In Whitefield Academy’s student handbook, which can be found on its website, the school says a “homosexual orientation” household wouldn’t be considered “in harmony” with the school’s beliefs. “On occasion, the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home may be counter or in opposition to the Biblical lifestyle the school teaches,” the handbook says. “This includes, but is not limited to, sexual immorality, homosexual orientation, or the inability to support Biblical standards of right and wrong.” Alford filed an appeal with the academy, arguing that her daughter shouldn’t be “held accountable for a cake that I purchased with no intention of promoting a posture of morality and cultural acceptance that contradicts that of Whitefield Academy.” While Alford said the school refused to meet with her, she said administrators did agree to change her daughter’s expulsion to a voluntary withdrawal so it would no longer be on her record. Alford said she’s pretty certain that Kayla misses Whitefield Academy, which she had attended since the sixth grade. “She had some close-knit friendships with students. The parents are great,” Alford said. “I just hate that this happened. Whitefield was not all bad. I really liked it. I wanted her to graduate from there.” Kayla started public school Friday, and her mom said “she’s adjusting” to the new atmosphere. Asked why she decided to share her family’s story publicly, Alford said that she believes her daughter was treated “unjustly” and that she wants to prevent anyone else from being subjected to similar treatment. “I just want to defend her in a graceful way. I want to stand up for my child,” she said. “Just treat people with kindness and love, and don’t be judgmental.” CORRECTION (Jan. 15, 2020, 9:36 a.m.) An earlier version of this article misstated the affiliation of Whitefield Academy. It is a Christian school that is affiliated with a Baptist church; it is not a Catholic school. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/...estyle-n1116136Looking forward to the comments on this.

Some day, I think we might discover there are two forms of homosexual origin. The first is being born that way, the second due to religious influence.

I'm certain that this must be what God and Jesus taught. The Bible must be full of this and encourage this sort of exclusionary and judgmental philosophy. That's why Christianity is responsibility for between $9-28 million deaths. YAY. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Death_toll_of_Christianitya more critical examination would put Christianity's death toll at 9.064 to 28.734 million.

Would you be crying if a Muslim student was expelled from a Muslim school for bringing Bacon snacks in for his classmates?

Would you be crying if a Muslim student was expelled from a Muslim school for bringing Bacon snacks in for his classmates? So rainbows are bacon to Christians? Why are Christian Schools sooooooooo homophobic? And since you went all out protecting that MAGA Hat kid in the other thread I thought you would take up for this child. I see you only care about kids when it fits your agenda or propaganda. This is exactly why I said looking forward to comments in my original post.

Perhaps you would cry even louder if a Jewish School expelled a Jewish student for bringing in a Jesus cake while wearing a sweater with a cross?

Buried in the article (past where it sounds like a majority stopped reading) was a brief reference to a longer discipline history, with actual legit infractions (cutting class, etc).
I think it's stupid that the last straw was a social media post. School needs to exercise more thought when handing out heavy punishment.
The girl also should have exercised a little more thought herself. Sounds like she really likes the school, and misses it (despite questionable practices like counseling for being gay). I bet she's thinking about all the dumb stuff that put her in the position to get tossed over such a dumb reason.
Not sticking up the for the school... I can't stand Christian institutions/people that are unable to reconcile their faith with living in 2020 and/or ignoring parts of the Bible in favor of others (kinda sounds like what's happening here, but not sure). They're going to get raked over the coals for this while the girl won't.

What gets me is that it's from a post on her MOM's FB! And I did read the discipline issues, but I doubt those too when wearing a rainbow sweater makes you a bad kid. Troglodytes.

What difference does that make? I mean she had on a sweater with a rainbow and a cake with a rainbow. Isn't that enough of a reason to discriminate against her?

It's not a public school. Christian or nonchristian school, when it's private they have strict rules and if you don't follow them your gone. IT'S PRIVATE which means it follows rules differently than public school ON PURPOSE. No one hides those rules from parents and in fact, they go out of their way to educate parents before they accept a student.
A big reason you spend the money for private school is for the higher moral standards and culture they teach along with the academics. If you don't like the culture or moral standards of a PRIVATE school then don't spend your money sending your kid to one. Especially don't send your kid to a private school and expect it to run like a public one. That's just careless and stupid.
Some of you are shocked that a Christian school upholds Christian morals? You're kidding right? The Bible that Christians LIVE by makes it very clear that homosexuality is wrong from Moses, to Paul, and even Jesus. So of course a Baptist private school is not going to tolerate such behavior.
This child was given multiple warnings for breaking their rules multiple times. Her sexual views were making many student uncomfortable. They finally had enough of dealing with her and kicked her out. They were even nice enough to change it to a voluntary withdraw so she could find a new school easier. Good luck getting the same nice treatment from ZERO TOLERANCE public schools.
It's a free country so send your kids to whatever private school you can afford but do your homework as a parent first to make sure that school teaches the same value system that you want them to learn because they will not change what they teach just to suit you. Then be involved with the school and make sure it's as advertised and that your kids fit in with the culture there.
We are a nation of people from all walk of life. We will never all be the same or all have the same values. There is NOTHING wrong with that. To each their own. Just respect peoples' right to be different whether as individuals or as groups. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheist, or anything else have a right to practice their belief and culture without being forced to fit some cookie cutter mold that doesn't offend anyone by making everyone miserable.
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

President Trump acted in the best interests of the American people Thursday when he signed an executive order to bolster and protect the rights of students to pray and discuss God in their schools. The order champions and reinforces the freedom of religion guaranteed to us in the Constitution as one of our most important rights.
The president appropriately took the action on National Religious Freedom Day. His executive order also ensures that religious entities are not excluded from participating in government-funded programs.
The presidential bully pulpit is never better utilized than when it upholds our country’s first freedoms spelled out in the Constitution's Bill of Rights.

"A Christian high school student in Kentucky was expelled after school administrators saw a photograph from her 15th birthday party in which she was wearing a rainbow sweater and smiling next to a rainbow birthday cake."
So she was expelled from school for a photo taken off school grounds, off hours at their personal home during a celebration?
They do realize that rainbows and bright colors are very trendy right now, and that popularity has nothing to do with gay symbolism?
So if she wore a black t-short, would she be expelled for supporting the Blank Panther organization? Or a white t-shirt for White Supremists? Or a white tank top for supporting spousal abuse?

Yeah, because all Muslims are like that. You do realize that homosexuality carries a death sentence in the middle east, correct? And that Islam is an extremely misogynist religion, correct? Or do you just want to sweep it under the rug. Because it doesn't fit your hypocritical agenda.

You do realize that homosexuality carries a death sentence in the middle east, correct? Interestingly enough, it doesn't carry a death sentence in the US- which is where we all happen to live. I live in a region of OH/USA that has the highest population density of Islam worshipers in North America, and there is none of what you assert in your post. They aren't imposing Sharia law on their members/neighbors, they aren't executing people in the streets, and they aren't issuing fatwahs calling for the heads of infidels. In my neck of the woods, they are "brown Lutherans/Methodists/Episcopalians/Baptists," for all intents and purposes. Their kids are on the chess team and playing clarinet in the concert band. Girls who wear the hijab do so because their parents want them to, but others don't- and the local mosque doesn't demand it. Now, you did say "in the Middle East," but that simply makes Rocket's point for him, however ironic his delivery. The behavior you describe is attributed to the lunatic fringe of that religion, who represent about 1-2% of the genpop. Nobody is denying that extremists have done what you describe, but here's the main point: they are religious extremists. Your clue is in the name. I live with the people you seemingly seek to malign, and I see them every day. I teach their kids. I trade in their stores. Wasim Hawari is the music director at both a moneyed suburb HS and the top-tier Youth Orchestra under our umbrella. They sit on city council, volunteer for PTA events, organize humanitarian fundraisers, and even drive squad cars as members of our local law enforcement. And they manage to do all this while: 1. being Muslim 2. not actually executing 'infidels' in the streets. Dang, Eve. wt(a)f? p.s. Rocket lived in My Town for at least 4 years, so he knows exactly why I'm tossing the bs flag onto the field at this point. He lived here, and saw first-hand how this diverse community operates. It's actually pretty cool. I kinda get why he snarked you the way he did. I carry a bit of that same chip myself. I don't like it when folks who don't know Our Story presume to cast stereotypes on people we actually know as- people. The Toledo-Dearborn corridor has been the center of U.S. Islamic Culture for almost 100 years. And no one has been beheaded, thrown from the top of a building, or dragged down the street. Just me - but I don't hate Christians or anyone. Not even Trump despite being labelled as that. Personally I find all organized religions to be questionable, at best, and they have been used to do much evil throughout history. Just like cops - the vast majority of people of religion are good, mean well and I have no problem with someone wanting to believe or worship whoever they wish - up to the point where they want to influence others around them with their version of God/Religion .... but history shows that "God" (whichever one you want to choose) has been used to commit horrendous atrocities. I also find it hypocrisy to talk about a loving, compassionate and forgiving God - while at the same time then treating homosexuals as outcasts. He created man in his image - well Homosexuality is part of that image then. Has been since the dawn of man. jmo.

It's not extreme hate for Christians, in this case it's extreme disappointment. I've said time and again that I don't hold anyone's religion against them, but I still get to question crap like this.

Well comparing America to extremist Muslims is all the rage these days. It makes it seem like what they did to this girl is okay.
Not really, but somehow in some of their minds it does.
Isn't that how GWB justified torture to break the Geneva Convention?
How can anyone justify this picture as a reason to pursicute this girl?
They really can't. That's why you see the Muslim comparisons.

The girl also should have exercised a little more thought herself. Maybe I am mistaken, the picture wasn't taken in school or on its premises, why would what the girl does outside of school pertain to that?

Maybe I am mistaken, the picture wasn't taken in school or on its premises, why would what the girl does outside of school pertain to that? Because their goal is not only to control your education, but also your entire life. Indoctrination runs deep.

CORRECTION (Jan. 15, 2020, 9:36 a.m.) An earlier version of this article misstated the affiliation of Whitefield Academy. It is a Christian school that is affiliated with a Baptist church; it is not a Catholic school. That explains it, it's Baptist.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
