Kinda my thought process as well. When sentenced, and basically the first thing out of your mouth is "I'm not suicidal" (who said he was???), and the next thing said is "I'm innocent", and the next 10 things said were "I'm not suicidal...." Makes you wonder.

According to my wife who watched the whole thing, the defense team went on and on for several hours harping on how Jussie was an innocent victim and was wronged by a racially biased legal system.....saying that any punishment would be a racially motivated hate crime. Completely ignoring the fact he was already found guilty by a jury of his peers. They were trying to make this a new trial, not a sentencing hearing.

In my experience, it’s only normal in high profile cases like this, and I’m presuming his staff of attorneys put on an equally or even longer show when it was their turn for mitigation. The judge is creating a record to reveal his rationale for the inevitable appeal.

Actually it was working. His implementation was just incredibly poor. People were coming out of the woodwork to support him. When video cameras are everywhere you better make sure you account for them. This would have been accepted completely if he had truly thought it through. Make the story more plausible.
