TRENT WILLIAMS T, WASHINGTON REDSKINS
ESPN's John Keim reports LT Trent Williams wants a contract extension that will pay him $20 million annually.
It's a lot of money for a 31-year-old that sat out last year and hasn't played a full season since 2013. Given his contract demands, it's unlikely any team gives up a first-rounder for Williams, but the Redskins may settle for an early Day 2 pick. The Jets and Browns are the top landing spots for Williams.

My position is this... new CBA or no CBA I think it's unwise to commit $60 to $75 million dollars to the right tackle position. That's if he signs a $15 mill/year deal. It could go higher. This is just an insane amount of money; part of the reason why my enthusiasm for pro sports has waned over the past few years. I put the blame squarely on the owners, not the players. If all salaries of players were cut by a factor of 10, they would still earn a decent living and you could actually afford to take your kid to game without it costing you a bank loan. Simply out of control... You think the players make a lot of money? Just wait until you find out how much an owner makes/is worth. . .

PFF had him ranked at the #10 OT last year and that was including LTs also. 12th. Conklin is the best right tackle on the market, and he's coming off a regular season which he finished 12th overall among tackles in PFF grade (78.3) https://www.pff.com/nfl/free-agency

Another option to consider at RT (if the Browns don't want to pay Conklin-type money) is Bryan Bulaga. Reports are the Packers have not met with his agent to discuss a deal. The Athletic reported, after the combine, that it was unlikely GB would be re-signing him.
Bulaga just turned 31, so he likely won't get a big deal like Conklin will.
However, the Packers switched to a zone-blocking scheme this year and Bulaga had one of his best seasons. The Packers led the NFL in zone blocking run plays at 70.3% per PFF. Stefan skin in Minnesota rant the second most zone blocking run plays at 66%.
For comparison per PFF:
Bryan Bulaga Overall - 77.8 Pass Blocking - 73.1 Run Blocking - 80.1 Total snaps = 898
Jack Conklin Overall -78.0 Pass Blocking - 72.4 Run Blocking - 80.5 Total snaps = 933
I think that I'd set out with Conklin as Plan A and if we cannot get him, Bulaga makes for a solid Plan B. Either way, it's a major improvement at RT and solidifies the position for 2020 through 2021, at least, and closes one hole before the Draft.

I like that both of those guys received high grades in run blocking. That is where the Browns OL really struggled. I'm surprised that GB might not keep Bulaga.

I'm surprised that GB might not keep Bulaga. The reports I have read say that the Packers have a history of not giving out third contracts to offensive lineman (for example, Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang) with the thinking being, they'd rather let a guy go too early than too late.

I think he would be a good guy to target if he does become available.
I also think it is important for the Browns to find a good blocking TE. Henry and Ebron are FA's, but they are more like Njoku in their pass catching guys more than blocking TEs.

Hunter Henry is also likely to get the franchise tag if the Chargers can't work out a long term deal.
The Browns certainly have a need for a TE.
Draft Adam Trautman on Day 2 if he's still there!

I wouldn't do two band-aid free agents unless it's the only option we have. One of them should be a viable long-term solution, otherwise you haven't fixed anything, you've just kicked the problems down the road a year or two. This is why I'd be perfectly fine overpaying, if need be, for a guy like Conklin. Then, absolutely still bring in Peters. And, then draft Andrew Thomas and even that OG from Michigan. That's an offense with pretty much no holes, right there. TE is the only "glaring" issue at that point, but it is suddenly very much marginalized in importance. We need real help on defense, though, too. Safeties, LBers, DLine. We need to get one or two young, first contract guys and a very older veterans... then we have to Draft heavy for defense.

Back when Conklin was drafted. I mocked him to us. But we traded back and took Coleman and the Titians used their selection that they received from us on Conklin.
Peradventure what could have been.

Peradventure what could have been. I have always found it odd how so many people don't seem to advocate heavy investments in the OL until it's in desperation. Operating from a place of strength has great advantages.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Running a 4-2-4 is not exactly ideal for that, IMO. Only having ten guys on defense would obviously not be ideal. did you not watch our guys try to line up

j/c,
I remember that the dogma of the time, was that Conklin would have to kick inside to OG.
Now this year we hear some of the same being said about some other top rated OTs' in this upcoming Draft.
Some maybe warranted, but then on some others, they could be dead wrong.
Take it with a grain of salt folks.

I'm not bothered by others having a different take on Conklin. Of course, I want a long term solution at RT but I would go about it differently in a way that is less likely to tie the hands of the team going forward.
Like it or not, I'd sign Mike Remmers. He's played for the Vikes if not for Stephanski as OC, then in an offense, KS had a large part in implementing. He zone blocks. He would be adequate and reasonably priced.
I"d draft two tackles. Remmers can provide depth at RT and Guard once the young RT is ready to play. This is why the Browns brought in Callahan, right? To develop the OL. This makes more sense to me than overpaying for Conklin. So, are you just going to hope to be able to draft two tackles every four years as rookie deals expire? Hope isn't a plan. The contract Conklin will get will be pretty much the same as if we had drafted him four years ago and now we're trying to keep him... his rookie deal just expired, he's up for his first real contract. We're getting a young, proven NFL RT who is probably Top 10 in what he does (someone should check that ranking, I'm going off the top of my head). It will likely be more than anyone wants to pay, but that's what it takes - especially in a Seller's market where he's pretty much all there is available. I don't mind people disagreeing with something I said. I do take exception with you, Purple, conjuring up something out of thin air that I never said then arguing against it as if I said that thing. Nowhere do I suggest that you have to turn over the tackle position every four years. You decided to inject this argument into my post in an attempt to discredit what I said. This type of dishonesty in threads happens way too often on these boards. There are a number of ways you could address the tackle position once you get draftees on the roster. You could extend one or both before their current contract expires. You could franchise one. You could trade a player if needed for a draft pick, you could make a cut elsewhere to free up money to resign a tackle if that became necessary. All of those are equally possible depending on circumstances. But you chose to ascribe the most damaging and implausible option to me. Dude this is sooo transparent. Try again.

A question to those of you who think getting a player signed before the current CBA goes into effect is the silver bullet. Once the agreement is signed even if it is not in force until the 2021 season why would a player sign a longterm deal now that would lock him into less favorable terms? Either I would push the envelope now financially or insist on a short term deal until the new CBA.

For one, why that sentence is in that reply, I'm not sure... I want to say that it was intended for a reply that was much later (I was busy this morning and had a few replies going at once).
Beyond that, I still don't agree with your take in any way. "Adequate" is not "Good" or even "Above Average", and he's older. Yes, you get to pinch a penny, but now you are banking on having two Rookie OT's work out and now the clock is ticking for you decide if the rookie works or you have to replace that guy AND the rookie.
We need two OT's... buy one good one, draft one good one. You chance of success is MUCH higher.

What those who disagree with me are failing to hear in my position is not an objection to Conklin. I don't object to signing him. I do object to knocking the payroll of the team out of order to sign one player, at this time. I'm not opposed to signing a RT in FA. I am opposed to handcuffing the team from dealing with all of the other roster needs by overpaying for a RT.
Disagree with me till the cows come home, it matters little to me. You are not convincing me it's in the best interest of the team to overpay this guy. He is simply not the only viable solution without regard to cost. The team may end up paying through the nose for this guy. If so, I view it as a mistake.

It's all good, guard. Different opinions are a good thing. I think you have to pay good players. It seems futile to not pay guys and then complain that a certain position or unit sucks. Of course, that is just my opinion. I will say this and it will be controversial, but I don't know if it is a good idea to cut Hubbard before you have a better RT or RG. He can play both inside and outside. I would have said the same thing about Robinson. The Browns were reportedly not going to bring him back BEFORE his arrest. I don't think that was very smart. Of course, his dumb ass eliminated all doubt. This FO worries me because they created a lot of unnecessary holes the last time they were in charge. You might not get this.............but, you're welcome.

I think that when you say 'overpay' is different than when I say 'overpay'. When I say 'overpay', I mean paying a bit more than the current going rate, depending on the market... and in a market where Conklin is the only top-tier RT, he *is* the market, so you have to be willing to pay a little more.
By no means should we strap the team for one player, ever, but we can pay a premium to get one or two top-tier guys each offseason and still not do that, quite easily. In fact, Berry and those guys have talked about exactly that being part of the team strategy many times.
The benefit of all this cap space is the ability to do the inverse of what we used to do with contracts and that is that we can front-load contracts. Guys get easier to hold onto over time as the cap goes up.

I don't fully trust that this FO will work out, but one thing I have absolute confidence in is that they have a Plan. Whether or not it is a good one or whether or not they can actually execute it successfully is another story, but I'm certain they actually have one and are of the sort of mind they WILL stick to it. I cannot say that about previous FO's, even if they may have seemed better equipped to execute a plan, they never seemed to operate with one. If I had to put markers on things, I'd say that I think this FO's primary weakness, until proven otherwise, is talent acquisition. If they can be 75% as good as Dorsey was with some of the talent he brought in, this FO will work out just fine. The rest falls on the coaching staff and their ability to get results out of that talent.

We can enter negotiations and agree in principal on the 16th. Becomes OFFICIAL on the 18th
