Research team has isolated the COVID-19 virus
March 12, 2020

A team of researchers from Sunnybrook, McMaster University(opens in a new window) and the University of Toronto(opens in a new window) has isolated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the agent responsible for the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.

Thanks to nimble collaboration, the team was able to culture the virus from two clinical specimens in a Level 3 containment facility.

“We need key tools to develop solutions to this pandemic. While the immediate response is crucial, longer-term solutions come from essential research into this novel virus,” said Dr. Samira Mubareka, microbiologist and infectious diseases physician at Sunnybrook.

The isolated virus will help researchers in Canada and across the world develop better diagnostic testing, treatments and vaccines, and gain a better understanding of SARS-CoV-2 biology, evolution and clinical shedding.

“Researchers from these world-class institutions came together in a grassroots way to successfully isolate the virus in just a few short weeks,” said Dr. Rob Kozak, clinical microbiologist at Sunnybrook. “It demonstrates the amazing things that can happen when we collaborate.”

Dr. Arinjay Banerjee, NSERC post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University, said he knows the collaboration won’t stop there.

“Now that we have isolated the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we can share this with other researchers and continue this teamwork,” he said. “The more viruses that are made available in this way, the more we can learn, collaborate and share.”

Congratulations to the researchers from these three Canadian institutions: Dr. Samira Mubareka and Dr. Rob Kozak of Sunnybrook and University of Toronto; Dr. Arinjay Banerjee and Dr. Karen Mossman of McMaster University.

With gratitude to the CL3 team and Biosafety Officers.

I'm no Dewine fan, but he and Amy Acton sure look like real leaders with this. They were on Fox News tonight, and it looks like Ohio is leading the country in being proactive in dealing with this.

They just closed the Hollywood Casino in Toledo under "executive order from Mike Dewine".

J/C ...... It's really bizarre to go to CBS Sports website, and see no scores.

Just out of curiosity, I went to Ebay to see how badly people are gouging on toilet paper. It's absolutely horrific.

One person has 3 $5 6 packs, sold as a group, for $50. crazy

Is it wrong of me to wish for these kinds of people to have such sustained explosive diarrhea that they, themselves, run out of their own TP about 2 months before their symptoms clear up?

I don't understand why toilet paper is the most important thing when the apocalypse arrives.

I want enough for a little bit, but I have 8 "quadruple rolls" left out of the last pack I bought, and my mom said that she has an unopened pack if I need some extra.

I am more concerned about tissues, because this time of year plays havoc with my sinuses.

Just wet a washcloth, scrub your butt and rinse it out.

You don't need toilet paper.

Just throw a 3/8 sharkbite style tubing tee in after your shut off valve, run the tee tubing up to the bowl with a tubing shut off valve just before it goes under the seat. Position the tubing on the back of the bowl under the rim and find the right angle for the spray then epoxy in place. About $6 for a bidet/toilet combo. Or get a kit on amazon for around $25-$30. Just be ready for that cold wash. wink

100 years ago people could wrap their minds around that. Today's crisis caused the rush on toilet paper because people think there ass depends on it. In a week or two the shelves will all be full again. If not, they'll have figured out they should have bought bullets instead.

It’s so strange to watch ESPN or to check the internet with NO scores in American sports. There’s usually that 1-2 days in July during the All Star Break when this is the case ... but not now, during the best sports month of the year

Since I am a pack rat (we never run out of anything) We still had a 30 day supply of toilet paper here before I went for groceries. Now I would normally have bought another two week supply yesterday, but We will live just fine on what we have here. No bread or buns in the stores, no problem I have two loves of bread and 2 12 packs of buns in the freezer. I always have us stocked up just in case of any emergency. We are a bit low on water though only about 100 bottles here laugh

Our local stores are short of chicken, ground beef, veggies, etc .... it looks like it might be a lot of soup, frozen pizza, grilled cheese for now

I have zero bottled water, but I have a few large food grade jugs that could be used with advance notice.... I doubt that happens.

As a single Male living alone, the Sam's Club bulk pack I bought 5 months ago will still carry me to December.

I did do a little extra shopping yesterday. Mostly dry goods. Extra flour, pasta, potatoes. Things that store well for a long time. I'm set for at least 6 weeks on dog food, probably can get by for that long for myself, too.
Avoiding boredom eating while cooped up will probably be the bigger challenge.

Spain is up to 5,753 cases. 1,200 new in the last 24 hours. More than half of all cases are in Madrid.

In short, nobody is slowing down except South Korea... and they went hardcore with their measures more than 6 weeks ago to finally be where they are today.

If anyone gets tested and can report how the process goes let us know!

Down here in North Carolina, I stopped at the Walmart to pick up some milk and bread and when I walked past the toiletries aisle the toilet paper was, pardon the phrase, wiped out.

Empty. It's not like the virus gives you the [censored] but why take chances right?

Some dude in Tennessee went bankrupt because he spent $17000 on hand sanitizer and now Amazon won't let him sell it because of price gouging.

My personal take on what's unfolding is that I think it's an "overreaction" to a problem we know little about. Or should I say a false reaction. Our country as a whole isn't simultaneously shutting down for a period of time and as such the virus will spread regardless. So once the kids go back to school they become at risk as does everyone who works. We have to work, we have to make money, we have to go outside. We can't stop being a civilization. So I fear, that all this shutting down workplaces, suspending events, suspending schools is trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Life goes on. We don't shut down like this for the Flu.

So right now, Roy Cooper shut down ALL North Carolina schools. Crazy.

I work at Marine Corp. Air Station Cherry Point and we are all waiting for them to shut us down. You know how the rumor mill works . . . we're also supposed to get Marines from Italy to be quarantined.

I am worried about my mom, who is elderly and lives back in Ohio, and I worry about those who can ill afford long work hiatuses. Do they get paid? If you get infected and don't have sick time, what do you do? It's as if, our leaders in business and industry as well as our government "has to do something" even if what they are doing isn't going to work long term. Better to "overreact" than to do nothing and be called out for it when people get sick and die. I just don't have much faith in these reactions . . .

I can say one thing for certain. We, as a society are never prepared for the emergency. We wait till the car veers off the road and down the cliff to send an ambulance rather than building a guardrail to prevent that car from veering off the road and down the cliff.

Scary. Sad. And frustrating.

And I'm running low on TP paper!!

I think flattening the Coronovirus Curve is vital. That is why canceling/suspending events, closing schools, limiting the number of people who congregate in one location, etc is important.

People are going to get the virus. It's important that it's spread out over time instead of everyone getting it in a short period of time.

Hospitals and other health providers would be overwhelmed and we would not be able to adequately treat such a large number of infected people. We are seeing the issues Italy is having right now.

I think suspending and canceling things is actually a very good idea to help slow down the disease a bit and thereby allowing us to save more lives.

Amen. This 100%. This is the biggest key. Many people will contract the virus, spreading it out (over time) is the only way to avoid mass chaos and be in a position to best treat those infected. The last thing we would ever want is to have to pick and choose who would receive treatment.
