Italy is talking that their hospitals up in Lombardy will no longer be able to accept patients, soon. None. They have already begun having to truck bodies out of Bergamo to other areas because the morgues there cannot keep up. Now, most all of Western Europe is tipping over into the same mess Italy is in.
They banned cycling for non-essential travel because they didn't want to have to divert medical personnel to deal with an accident or even have a bed for the person should they need it.

Spain nationalized all private medical facilities and hospitals three days ago. As of Monday, they didn't have enough masks to get a new one each time they went to a new patient; they're nearly out of gowns and have started to use basic plastic sheeting over porous gowns, and they're re-using protective eyewear that colleagues have already used, washing them themselves between uses.
In France, their army has stepped in to help and are airlifting patients to other areas of France to lessen the burden on hospitals in the hardest hit areas. The eastern French cities of Mulhouse and Colmar warn that the system is at breaking point. They, too, are running out of equipment, are slagged with fatigue, and are approaching the point where they will need to start deciding which patients to prioritize . France in total has about 5,000 intensive care beds across the country. I could not find numbers on how many ICU beds are currently in use, or unoccupied, but in Mulhouse alone, they are getting about 10 new ICU cases per day.

I know. I have been telling everybody around here that it's going to get worse before it gets better. My kids think it will all blow over in a few weeks. Once again they will find out "Father knows best" Yes, mine too and they are all 30 something.

Just saw on tv that the CDC is encouraging healthcare workers to use makeshift masks, like bandanas or whatnot, when they run out of regular masks. Hospitals around here are now locking masks, gloves and disinfectant wipes due to theft.

That's crazy! That's almost the same as not even using a mask at all.

My Daughter has the job (regional sales manager for Cardinal health) of supplying most of NEO (and others) with their medical supplies. Needless to say, she is not able to do so, and she is very distressed with her job. She was getting most of them by way of Italy. Culture swabs for testing is another major item that is included.

Trump: FDA making anti-malaria drug available 'almost immediately' to tackle coronavirusPresident Trump announced Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is making experimental drugs -- including those used for treating malaria -- available as part of the ongoing effort to tackle the spread of the coronavirus. Trump announced at a White House press briefing that chloroquine, a drug designed for use in malaria, has been FDA approved and will be made available by prescription "almost immediately." He said it was one of a number of antiviral therapies to limit the symptoms of the virus that the administration is trying to get to Americans as quickly as possible. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-fda-experimental-drugs-coronavirusHope.

Yet everything that's been proposed only treat symptoms, if they even work, but do nothing to "stop the spread" of the virus.
I mean if effective it would help with the severity of the symptoms and lower the death count. A very positive development.
But a treatment does not stop the spread of the virus in any way, shape or form.

Well, the malaria treatment is a good ray of light IMO ... even if it doesn’t stop/eliminate the spread

Anything that may help lessen the symptoms and cut down the death rate is welcome news. But color me skeptical until I see more evidence.

Numbers are really starting to shootup. 1 month ago there were officially 3 cases in Italy. Now, they're over 41,000 and with 3,405 dead have surpassed China for most deaths after having more than 430 deaths each of the last two days. They're in meltdown. We are headed there.

It will look the same, but different here. We're going to have dozens of areas/regions in various states of meltdown.... but, they'll all get there.
Germany is holding up surprisingly well right now. I saw earlier today that they haven't even really gotten to the point of cancelling elective procedures, yet.

With our land mass, I pretty much agree with your synopsis. We have major cities broken up by huge areas of land. Spreading evenly from cast to coast would take time. I think the least populated, least visited areas will be the last areas to see major infections.

They're also the ones most likely to have the fewest ventilators and ICU beds.... but, I agree, the country might be a good place to be.

With so many rural hospitals that have closed, it's going to be very hard on those type of communities.

In the Nordic states (and Germany) there are often ski-vacation weeks in late-Feb. Leads to a bunch of families (schools are out) - flying to places (like the Alps) for ski vacations. It was a bad beat of luck, because around Feb 20, there was no good reason not to go to Italy. Lots of people came back, which is why things spread so heavily in these countries. The flip side of this, is that the average people who go on ski vacations are relatively healthy - kids and their 40ish year-old skiing parents. Lots of relatively mild cases. Also by the time many people came back, the need to quarantine became obvious.

No, our curve is likely not flattening at all, yet. WAY too soon for that sort of conclusion.
What we are seeing today in the way of confirmed cases is really, in effect, a picture of what we looked like two weeks ago. A few days of stringent measures aren't having that sort of impact, yet.
If anything, I'm betting that there were some recent gatherings, parties, conventions, or concerts in Michigan that account for the higher number there... or perhaps, they're just actually testing people.

Italy's mortality rate is climbing. A week ago, they were hovering around 7%... a hair more than double the global average. Today, they are up to 8.3%. I'm thinking that this is reflecting the choices they are being forced to make in regard to whether or not some people receive care. If so, I would not be surprised to see this rate climb above 10-12%

UK and Frances death tolls are rising like crazy.
Europe is getting it hard right now.

Also - Iran's numbers just don't make sense to me. They are climbing SOOOOOO slowly compared to so many other nations, even after everything that was said about how their medical system is utterly unprepared and unable to cope with this, and the reports of how widespread it was after they had the first lockdown that chased people away from their bigger cities to every remote area, spreading the disease as they went.
It has long been felt, for probably two months, that they were grossly underreporting things, but supposedly WHO is there now, and I would think that would clear up the numbers a bit. It does seem that news coming out of there is a lot sparser now, and their leadership is kinda in turmoil as nearly their entire cabinet has been infected or killed by this.

Also Italy has a 65+ population of like 25%, where the US is like 15% or something. That is not helping them.

Pakistan is the one that is going to probably end up as one of the larger disasters.
They have a very poor, VERY densely packed population. Most everybody is in a few cities and their leaders have said they cannot cordon off cities or lock them down as people would likely end up starving... so, to feed the people, they will be exposed to the spreading virus.
I think their cases are mostly limited to Peshawar right now, but if/when it gets to Karachi and Lahore, they're going to be a mess.

My wife just got home. She said they had more elective cases today than at any time in the last three weeks.
She said one guy had the symptoms. His fever wasn't high enough and they did the elective surgery. He was assigned to my wife's room.
I'm not saying the guy has the virus, but terrible decisions like that are only going to make this problem worse.
I will add that the hospital has left the decisions to operate or not up to the surgeons.

Not sure if been posted..... My wife just told me, starting tomorrow..... When an employee of the Cleve Clinic comes into work ANYWHERE in the Cleve Clinic system their temperature will be taken......EVERY DAY. IF your temp is 100.3 or greater you'll be sent home. I told her to drink a scalding cup of coffee right before the test.

My wife has been working at home since last Thursday. Today, her supervisor called her and told her that a girl in the production department went to lunch with a friend who found out she was positive at lunch. The girl then returned to work and let everyone know she was exposed. When asked why she would return to work and expose 70+ others, she said she figured should would be allowed to finish the day before self quarantining. They fired her on the spot.
No idea if she was really exposed as these are younger people and that place is a peyton place, but the wife is now working from home indefinitely.
