Ohio lawmaker says she'll press crimes against humanity charge against Trump over hydroxychloroquine promotion
Ohio state Rep. Tavia Galonski (D) said that she will make a “referral for crimes against humanity” over President Trump’s promotion of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the novel coronavirus, despite its unproven benefits and lack of long-term Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.
“I can’t take it anymore. I’ve been to The Hague. I’m making a referral for crimes against humanity tomorrow,” Galonski tweeted late Sunday.
“Today’s press conference was the last straw," Galonski added. "I know the need for a prosecution referral when I see one.”
Galonski, who represents the Akron area, told the Ohio Capital Journal on Sunday that she had "no idea” how she would go about such a referral.
“How hard can it be?” Galonski, a former magistrate in the Summit Count Common Pleas Court added.
Trump has repeatedly promoted hydroxychloroquine, which is approved to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, as a potential treatment for the coronavirus, which the FDA said last week has led to a shortage of the drug.
At a press briefing late Sunday, the president recommended the drug despite limited evidence of its efficacy in treating the virus, saying, "What do you have to lose? I’m not looking at it one way or another. But we want to get out of this. If it does work, it would be a shame if we didn’t do it early."
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci has reportedly been at odds with White House trade adviser Peter Navarro about promoting hydroxychloroquine and said Sunday that its benefits remain largely unknown.
"The data are really just at best suggestive. There have been cases that show there may be an effect, and there are others to show there's no effect," Fauci said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "So I think in terms of science, I don't think we could definitively say it works."

Detroit Dem says Trump's touting of hydroxychloroquine helped save her life
A Democratic state representative from Detroit has recovered from coronavirus and she says it was the combination of the drug hydroxychloroquine and President Trump that saved her life.
State Rep. Karen Whitsett's husband is an engineer at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and the two believe they were exposed to COVID-19 through his job.
Whitsett said she started experiencing shortness of breath, sinus issues, and swollen lymph nodes and tested positive for the virus on Monday.
Her doctor prescribed hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent and treat malaria and also used to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and medical conditions.
Trump has touted the use of hydroxychloroquine during his daily coronavirus briefings despite push back from health experts who warn that the drug could potentially be dangerous and its effectiveness against COVID-19 hasn't been proven.
"It has a lot to do with the president ... bringing it up," Whitsett said in an interview with the Detroit Free Press. "He is the only person who has the power to make it a priority."
Whitsett began taking the drug in combination with antibiotics on March 31 and said she started receiving relief in "less than two hours."
Asked whether she thinks Trump may have saved her life, Whitsett said: "Yes, I do," and "I do thank him for that."
Trump tweeted at the freshman lawmaker on Monday saying "Congratulations to State Representative Karen Whitsett of Michigan. So glad you are getting better!"
Whitsett's husband is still awaiting test results from his COVID-19 exam.

There are a couple of things that have become obvious during this time. Perhaps the most important is that when there is a time of crisis, we don’t want optimism, we want facts, as difficult as it may be.
This crisis is beyond the control of a mayor or governor. That is why we have pleas for assistance. For the Federal government to say, tough [censored], it’s your problem, deal with this yourself is insensitive, un empathetic, and ultimately wrong.
It is in our culture, we are taught that in a time of war or crisis, to put political preferences aside and pull together and help you fellow American. Some cannot put politics aside, and that unfortunately includes the President.

American televangelist Kenneth Copeland, who recently claimed that the coronavirus pandemic will be "over much sooner you think" because "Christian people all over this country praying have overwhelmed it," has summoned the "wind of God" to destroy the novel coronavirus during a recent sermon.
Before blowing at the camera, he said: "I blow the wind of God on you. You are destroyed forever, and you'll never be back. Thank you, God. Let it happen. Cause it to happen."
Leading a chant surrounded by members of his church and preaching to an empty room, he called out: "Wind, almighty, strong, south wind, Heat: Burn this thing, in the name of Jesus. I say, you bow your knees. You fall on your face."
In a sermon last month, the pastor "executed judgment" on Covid-19, which he declared "finished" and "over" and made the US "healed and well again." He also demanded "a vaccination to come immediately."
His Texas-based Kenneth Copeland Ministries megachurch previously has claimed that viewers of his show can be healed of the virus by touching their screens, and he has urged viewers to continue paying tithes despite losing their jobs amid unprecedented unemployment claims within the last several weeks.
He also has compared the virus to the flu and suggested people who attended his services could be healed in person.
"If we have to pass out thermometers, if we find one with a fever, let's get him healed right there," he said. "What do you do if you get it? Big deal."
The pastor, who supports Donald Trump, also argued to his followers that the president's opponents had "opened the door" for the virus with their "displays of hate" against him.
Several other prominent evangelical leaders in the Christian right, who rely on miraculous healing in their ministries, also have denied the pandemic in addresses to their followers.
Florida Pentecostal pastor Rodney Howard-Browne held several services in packed churches despite warnings from health officials and doctors to avoid large gatherings to prevent spreading the disease, which he called a "phantom plague" before his arrest for violating social distancing rules.
Roy Moore, who launched a failed bid endorsed by the president for a senate seat in Alabama, has defended Louisiana pastor Tony Spell after he was charged for continually shunning a statewide ban on large gatherings.
Mr Moore told his followers it's their "duty" to continue attending church services despite the pandemic.
