Health care workers block protesters challenging stay-at-home order in DenverHealth care workers blocked protesters challenging stay-at-home orders in Denver on Sunday, according to video and photos shared on social media. Images posted on Facebook by photographer Alyson McClaran show two health care workers in scrubs and masks standing with arms crossed in the street, blocking the protestors in a counter demonstration. https://www.facebook.com/alyson.mcclaran/posts/10159743098064573Video of the interaction shared on Twitter shows a woman holding a sign with the words “Land of the Free” yelling at one of the health care workers silently blocking her truck from passing. Some protests have broken out across the country against stay-at-home orders put in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Stay-at-home orders have been ordered in nearly every state in the country in order to prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading through social contact. Public health officials have warned that such social distancing measures can help flatten the curve of infections and limit the number of cases of the potentially fatal COVID-19. Colorado is under a stay-at-home order that calls for residnets to stay at home unless they are engaged in necessary activities. Under the order, all bars, restaurants and gyms are closed. Colorado has reported 9,730 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 420 deaths. President Trump last week defended protestors defying social district guidelines. He said at a Friday White House briefing that he feels some state orders are “too tough.” He also tweeted support for protests in Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia, calling to “liberate” the three states all run by Democratic governors. He said he doesn’t necessarily think those states should lift their stay-at-home orders but said he feels “elements of what they’ve done is too much.” White House guidelines released last week recommend states wait for a 14-day decline in cases before they lift stay-at-home orders. https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch...t-home-order-inAbout time to give these idiotic protests their own thread.

Governors headed for messy fight over coronavirus restrictionsGovernors are heading for a clash with their own citizens and local officials as they weigh how and when to reopen the country's economy amid the coronavirus pandemic. President Trump's own guidelines for easing social districting restrictions, unveiled on Thursday, leave the final decisions for those matters with state governors. And those governors are facing growing pressure from the public in states such as Ohio and Michigan, where protests have called on leaders to quickly lift stay-at-home orders and bans on large gatherings and to allow nonessential businesses to open their doors. Experts say those fights between local stakeholders eager to lift the economic shutdown and governors, wary of losing ground against the virus, will be the next battleground in the nation's pandemic response. “We’ve already seen significant conflicts between state and local leaders over the imposition of social distancing restrictions, exceptions to them, and how they should be enforced,” said Lindsay Wiley, a law professor at American University. "We’ll surely see conflicts over decisions to ease them." And it's a fight in which Trump appears to be siding with those who want the restrictions to be lifted quickly. Trump and state governors appeared to reach a truce this week when the White House unveiled guidelines for phasing in a reopening of the economy that seemed to give wide latitude to states. The federal recommendations came after Trump and several state leaders recently exchanged sharp words over whether public health authority ultimately resides with federal or state governments. “You’re going to call your own shots,” Trump told the governors during a conference call, according to the Associated Press. “We’re going to be standing alongside of you.” But in a series of tweets on Friday, Trump appeared to back protesters in Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia, where extended stay-at-home orders and other restrictions have sparked a backlash. “LIBERATE MINNESOTA,” Trump tweeted, followed by a tweet which read “LIBERATE MICHIGAN.” "LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!," read a third tweet, a reference to new gun laws in the state. Trump’s tweets in support of the protestors seemed designed to put pressure on the Democratic leaders of three 2020 swing states. Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee (D) fired back at Trump, accusing him of "fomenting domestic rebellion." More protests are expected in the coming days in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Idaho and among states, giving a public voice to the opposition to social distancing restrictions across the country. In Michigan, a crowd of demonstrators organized by a conservative group on Wednesday descended on the state Capitol to protest Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's (D) stay-at-home order. “When did one size solve everyone’s local issues?" one unidentified organizer asked local news radio station WWJ. "Gov. Whitmer will put you out of business before allowing mere citizens to be responsible for their own behavior. That is madness.” Whitmer faces two lawsuits over her stay-at-home order, with the plaintiffs — Michigan residents and businesses — claiming the April 9 order infringes on the constitutionally-protected freedom of association and due process rights. Michigan has recorded more than 29,000 cases and 2,000 deaths from coronavirus. Nationwide, the U.S. has more than 683,000 cases and 34,000 deaths. In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) has been under criticism for his decision to include churches and other houses of worship in his state's strict social distancing guidelines. During a tense interview with Tucker Carlson of Fox News, Murphy was asked about constitutional protections after police broke up a rabbi's funeral in early April at a synagogue in Ocean County, N.J., arresting 15 men. "That's above my pay grade, Tucker," Murphy replied. "I wasn't thinking of the Bill of Rights when we did this. ... We looked at all the data and the science and it says people have to stay away from each other. That is the best thing we can do to break the back of the curve of this virus, that leads to lower hospitalization and ultimately fatalities." The landmark 1905 Supreme Court decision in Jacobson v. Massachusetts held that constitutional rights can be lawfully restricted when emergency public health measures are in place, though the precise scope of government public health power is not clearly defined. But there has not been a direct legal ruling yet on mandatory stay-at-home orders and state and local leaders could find themselves dragged into court fights if they adopt an overly aggressive approach to enforcing mitigation measures, Wiley said. Governors and local officials may need to walk a tight line in enforcing restrictions. “Harsh enforcement would probably trigger lawsuits that could be more difficult for state and local leaders to defend than the suits filed so far by churches, gun shops, and health care providers,” she said. In addition to citizen protests, another source of conflict could result from states moving on a faster timeline to reopen than cities, where higher population density makes person-to-person transmission of the virus easier. “Conflicts between state and local control are a common problem for public health measures,” Wiley said. “We’ve seen it with gun control and fast food regulation, and now we’re seeing it with social distancing.” Within states, the division of public health power is based on each state’s constitution and statutes, creating a complicated patchwork of authorities across the country. In a majority of states, the governor, legislature or both, have the power to override local governments. In other cases, state constitutions provide so-called “home rule” authority, giving a degree of autonomy to local leaders. How these looming health conflicts are resolved will vary state by state and early signs are of a split among blue and red states, with Republican governors more eager to ease restrictions. Wiley said governors will face a challenge as they navigate the pressure and decide how to enforce restrictions. “Pandemic plans urge leaders to avoid police crackdowns and to rely on enforcement against businesses and organizations — not individuals," she said. "Maintaining the public’s trust and cooperation will be critical over the months to years for which some degree of social distancing is likely to be needed." https://thehill.com/regulation/court-bat...us-restrictions

Those Healthcare workers got it easy, THEY STILL HAVE A DAMN JOB AND A PAYCHECK COMING IN!!!!! Even if they would get the Coronavirus, most of them are under the age of 45 and their chances of dying is less than 1%
why don't you go talk to the millions of people who don't? That are FORCED to by government make ends meet on roughly half what they would normally make with 2-3 little kids in the house(that is if they can even get unemployment with how swamped the system is)...lets lay those hospital workers off and cut half their pay for 2-3 months(or no pay at all) and see how they feel about it then.
Meanwhile, States like Virgina are using this to take away peoples 2nd Amendment rights and enacting all kinds of crazy unconstitutional laws.

The protesters are the fringe and they are more or less holding rallies than protesting stay-at-home orders. They are a very minute percentage of the population. Far more people support the stay-at-home orders. The large majority even think May 1st it too soon open up.
Here were some of the protesters down in Columbus over the weekend.

Why am I not surprised that you and the media focus on the fringe while not showing pics of all those hundreds of American flags the rest of us saw.

I read several articles about these protests of social distancing. My wife and I were discussing it yesterday and she was upset by it. As most of you know, she is 69 years old and works in health care. A side note: I mentioned this in another thread, but in one of the pics I saw yesterday, there was this guy w/a sign that said something like Covid-19 is a lie! He was wearing a mask while holding that sign.

I'd agree that the virus isn't a lie, but now that they are adding thousands of deaths to the total just because, it's lending credence to the idea that this has been blown out of proportion. Serious yes, but blown out of proportion.

I was listening to the police scanner for the Lansing protest last week and I can remember at least a few police calls where protesters were blocking entrances to hospitals. Specifically on 2 of the calls, they were blocking ambulances trying to get into the ER for drop offs.

As someone with family members that are nurses as well, and that all are going to work right now tell you to get bent. All of em feel this whole lockdown is BS and they been dealing with COVID patients too If you feel so strongly about it, give up your salary for 3 months then, go 6 weeks with no money coming in(thats the wait time on unemployment) and then live on HALKF what your normally make for the next 2-3 months. Go ahead!!!! Im lucky, I am still able to work during this, but many people are not...you have no damn idea what millions of Americans are going through right now with no money.....can't pay their rent, can't buy food, got little kids. you take your clinical voice somewhere else. You still got a damn job millions don't.

That is nothing short of disgusting. You would think so.... your not the one with no job, with rent due, and 2-3 little kids to take care of and can't afford your rent or mortgage now. Its so disgusting to simply want to give people the ability to go back to work so they can provide for themselves.

Yup Vers, Im going to tell you the same thing my sister who is an RN told me: "None of us nurses should be getting any special treatment. We knew through school and education that dealing with sick contagious people was part of the job. We signed up for this, and im happy to do it. Its what I always wanted to do. We are no more special than the electric worker that climbs a power pole at 2 am during a blizzard to restore power to a city block. Its dangerous, but its our job and that's what we signed up for. You don't like it, get out, retire, find another career. Your not entitled to a damn thing" Of course I value people in the medical profession, but folks telling me to "get bent" simply because I am showing some damn compassion to 40+ million people who are out of work right now is downright CALLOUS those nurses still have jobs those nurses still are getting paid those nurses still have healthcare those nurses can afford to pay their rent or mortgage those nurses can afford to buy food for their kids 40+ million other Americans are not in such a position, they are healthy and are being told they can't work. Im so sorry for calling out the boorsih outright callous behavior of these nurses counter protesting people who are facing homelessness and the streets very soon if they are not able to get back to work. In Oklahmoma alone 30,000 people will be evicted from their home soon as the lockdown is lifted....you want to help them find some place to live? How would you feel if you were facing being homeless and unable to feed your kids and some nurse was counter protesting you while still getting paid? I don't think you would like it much at all. https://oklahoman.com/article/5660461/flood-of-evictions-expected-to-hit-oklahomaOr how about Colorado where 450,000 people are going to be kicked from their home as soon as this lockdown is up https://coloradosun.com/2020/04/15/coronavirus-renters-colorado-study/What about them? I guess they should just be happy go lucky while your wife and others in medical field continue to collect a paycheck and tell all us other dirty people that we should feel bad over protesting against a government enforced loss of wages and job...who cares right? its not hurting you at all.

Do yourself a favor and watch these protests going on. then explain to me just how much these whack jobs practice social distancing. News flash! They don't.
So then maybe you can explain how people would follow it if we lifted restrictions that require it.

Thats the thing though, when your 3 months behind on your mortgage, savings is or is almost empty, and you got little kids...you don't give a damn about social distancing...what you do care about is taking care of them, having food, and not being homeless. everything else is a second. at least for me personally it is.

So you don't worry about spreading the virus among your family? Hard decisions have to be made, that much we certainly agree on.
But this social distancing won't last forever. It's not like it's an end to life as we know it. It's only temporary. We'll get through it and come out of the other side.
In the mean time being safe and protecting your family and loved ones seems like should be your top priority at the present time.

Go protest the banks. They’re the ones that could hold off on loan payments. Go protest that the government could step in and mandate it, but haven’t. Go protest that the pittance of a subsidy check was an insult to us as taxpayers while the top 1% made out again like the thieves they are. Stop fighting the nurses that are saving your dumbarses a week or two after you protest us. You’re so use to boot licking your oppressors boots, the banks and big business, that even in times like these you attack the rest of us for them. The focus of your rage is jacked up. “The world is on fire and I can’t work! I hate those firemen thinking they’re so cool still going to work!!! Derp!” Yes I’m a nurse. Yes on some level I signed up for this. But I signed up with a social agreement that the rest of society plays along in times like these. Not run out and spread this crap and over run the medical system I work in.

I hate those firemen thinking their so cool still going to work!!! Derp!”
Yes I’m a nurse. Yes on some level I signed up for this. But I signed up with a social agreement that the rest of society plays along in times like these. Not run out and spread this crap and over run the medical system I work in.
Right on Que! This statement sums it up perfectly....You a nurse and we should be grateful you even take a minute of your day to help us poor dirty heathens. Thanks for letting me know that! I feel so much better now!

No kidding bro. Our lives are on the line expecting everyone on earth has common sense. Boy are we in deep dodo. Everyone's life is on the line, your life is on the line everyday you get in your car to go to work. Im not saying the virus isn't a problem, but at what point does the risk = worth it...for many people we are getting close to that line. As i said before for every person it is different, but our Constitution doesn't bode well to locking people down longterm. if this goes on too much longer, folks are going to file suit..the Supreme Court is going to rule these lockdowns unconstitutional...then what?

Do yourself a favor and watch these protests going on. then explain to me just how much these whack jobs practice social distancing. News flash! They don't.
So then maybe you can explain how people would follow it if we lifted restrictions that require it. Thats the thing though, when your 3 months behind on your mortgage, savings is or is almost empty, and you got little kids...you don't give a damn about social distancing...what you do care about is taking care of them, having food, and not being homeless. everything else is a second. at least for me personally it is. Then I hope to hell you learn from this. I have been through my position ending-by layoff, 9/11 and takeover downsizing. The first was a shock, a couple months after 9/11 I got laid off when a couple months before I was swamped with work-everything just dried up. But by 2008 myself and my wife had seen this before and thought it might happen again-so we got out of our stocks before they crashed-always live just a bit below our means, have that 6 months or more of savings in the bank for food and mortgage and healthcare. We were ready in 2008 and I didn't get laid off. We went out and used some of our savings to pay cash for sitework on our house we built and got a really good loan rate. This time-I was thinking something like this was going to happen. We have been working on our stockpile since probably before Feb 1st-got out of stocks in mid Feb. I learned some hard lessons but try to not make the same mistakes again that I made before

You are way off base. I work in a hospital and have a lot of contacts with nurses and physicians across the country. Unless they're in one of the concentrated areas, they are getting their hours cut drastically. Patient census is bottoming out in most areas of the country, and although there are some staff shortages in places like NYC and Detroit....people are being forced to stay home. In my organization, quite a few positions have been furloughed. Don't act like health care workers are "lucky". They are facing financial struggles just like everyone else.
I can also tell you that most nurses I know aren't expressing the same thing your sister is. Though they chose their profession to help and care for others, they didn't sign up to risk their lives to be thrown into a pandemic without basic personal protection equipment.....though that is exactly what they are doing.

This thing is affecting everything, and almost everything.
Spoke with a hog farmer today, and I was thinking "dang, at least his job is safe." And he mentioned that Smithfield, a pork processor - the worlds largest pork processor, shut a plant in Sioux Falls, SD. He explained that he raises hogs, he can't store them. If processors are closing, what's he going to do with his hogs?
Little guys like me, restaurants, farmers, non 'essential' factory workers, etc.........the list is extremely long, and yes, in some areas even the health care industry.
Unless you're getting a gov't. check each month, be that ss, or whatever, it's affecting everyone. And it's probably affecting those people as well.

KOB and arch have raised serious issues. But forcing a return to work before we are sure we have a handle on this this is only going to make things much worse.
This is a failure of leadership on both sides. We have given mega bucks to the rich but much of the working class is still waiting on a chump change $1200 check... UBI and MC4A is needed now.

Im not arguing anymore, we can agree to disagree and be respectful and I intend to do that.
The economic impacts of this can be far worse than the virus. Like the direct increase in suicides following such dire economic conditions is a toll on human life to.
Like I said, I am thankful to still be able to work and provide for my family, but people out there are not so fortunate, and someone needs to advocate for them too.
Take it easy, and stay safe

Yup Vers,
Im going to tell you the same thing my sister who is an RN told me:
"None of us nurses should be getting any special treatment. I never said she wanted special treatment. I never said she should receive special treatment. What irritated me was your original comment about health care workers having it easy. Most health care workers are "givers." My children and I worry about her. She replies: "this is what we signed up for." They give. They don't freaking take. They are NOT asking for special treatment or even praise. But damn man, don't go bad-mouthing them or you're gonna have a whole bunch of folks like me barking up your ass! You know, I was not going to even mention the situation w/my wife and the patient who tested positive for the virus. It happened last week and have kept it to myself. But, she has been unable to even raise her arm. She can't sleep on it. I was messing around and poked it the other day and she let out a yelp. And I am telling you, she is one tough bird. The dude weighed over 400 lbs and had the virus. My wife is not a big woman. Can you imagine how much closeness and physical contact she had w/him trying to get him off the bed and onto the table? She had the assistance of one OR Nurse. She didn't complain. She stated the event factually. Maybe a little eye roll when she said he had tested positive. Now........moving on.......compare her and folks like Portland, jfan, Milk's brother, etc and the folks protesting because they are complaining about not being free to do the things they want to do. GTF outta here w/that nonsense!

I want to make sure I clarify something. I said this: Now........moving on.......compare her and folks like Portland, jfan, Milk's brother, etc and the folks protesting because they are complaining about not being free to do the things they want to do.
These guys are not asking for praise. They are not asking for special privileges. Their doing their damn job and deserve our respect. Also, we should think about doing all we can to make sure we don't put them at risk by making foolish, selfish decisions.
