j/c the murder of George Floyd was tragic and evil. Both the officer responsible and those that stood by and watched should face prosecution.

Clearly there are many dynamics at play regards the protests and violence. From what I can see, some people want to form a response to "the protests" based on the very worst behavior and lawlessness ... the reality is the vast majority are looking to protest the murder. Some are just opportunistic lowlifes that are using the situation to steal or vandalize.

Maybe it's me, but zeroing in and focusing on the criminal group that are using the protests as cover is flat our wrong - it removes the spotlight from where it needs to be. Root cause of these protests is how racial discrimination is still very much alive and well in this country. I've seen debate whether the police officer's action were driven by racism .... I don't know how you want to define racism, but I look at that incident and death and I feel like if there was a white man being arrested and detained and he couldn't breath, the officer would have removed his knee while still detaining him ... that's racial discrimination and it's part of what we need to change. Whether you want to call that racism or not idk ... elsewhere racism most definitely does exist ... white privilege most definitely exists ... people should focus on THAT and come together on how we work to reducing and ultimately eliminating it.

I think we all hope for that.

Washington (CNN)National security adviser Robert O'Brien on Sunday denied in an interview on CNN that systemic racism exists across the nation's police forces, arguing instead that "a few bad apples" give the impression of racism among law enforcement officers.

"No, I don't think there's systemic racism. I think 99.9% of our law enforcement officers are great Americans. Many of them are African American, Hispanic, Asian, they're working the toughest neighborhood, they've got the hardest jobs to do in this country and I think they're amazing, great Americans," O'Brien told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" when asked if systemic racism was a problem for police agencies.
O'Brien added that there are "some bad apples in there. There are some bad cops who are racist. There are cops that maybe don't have the right straining."
"There is no doubt that there are some racist police, I think they're the minority, I think they're the few bad apples and we need to root them out," he said.

The comments from O'Brien come as protests against racism and police violence have taken place across the country in the aftermath of George Floyd's death. The official claimed the violence that has broken out in some cities is being driven by "militants," and said he had not seen reports that white supremacists had inflamed tensions in some instances. He also maintained that President Donald Trump and the White House support peaceful demonstrations.
The protests were sparked by the killing last week of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Protesters say they want to see charges for all four police officers involved in Floyd's death. So far, officials have only charged the officer who was seen in a video with his knee on Floyd's neck with third-degree murder and manslaughter -- but protesters and critics believe the charge isn't harsh enough.
Although the protesters are calling for justice in Floyd's case in cities across the country, they are also seeking to draw attention to a number of recent high-profile cases in which African American men and women died at the hands of police officers, including Eric Garner and Mike Brown.
Appearing later on the same program, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker struck a decidedly different tone, telling Tapper that "black people in communities all across this country live in fear of the police."
"What we see manifesting right now is not just a reaction to a live or caught-on-tape murder but a deep wound within our society, within our body politic that are festering in our country and must be addressed," said Booker, who represents New Jersey.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, similarly spoke last week about the "constant anxiety and trauma" experienced by black people in America when talking about Floyd's killing.
"Imagine if every time your husband or son, wife or daughter left the house, you feared for their safety from bad actors and bad police," Biden said.

This is how I see things right now.

When the reports of George Floyds murder made the news, most all of the country was behind justice for him. All expect the extreme fringe supremacists and such.

Then the protests start and people are still with them, but some are starting to get skittish, knowing this will most likely turn to violence.

Then the riots happen, at first it was expected by most, but then they continue and grow, now you have a new polarization where people who were all for justice are now distracted and dividing into pro-riots, and anti riot sides.

IMO, any advancement that was made by the "justice for George" movement was all but lost with the riots.

The best thing that could happen now, is that proof and video comes out and spreads like wildfire that the riots weren't the result of protests, but of opportunistic groups looking to continue the divide and divert attention away form the real issue.

In the end, destroying businesses and lives of people who most likely stood WITH them when this started, is not solving or progressing the issue forward.

Minnesota Officials Link Arrested Looters to White Supremacist Groups

(CN) – As Minneapolis underwent a fourth night of protests over the death of George Floyd, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Saturday that most rioters arrested are from outside of the city and sought to take advantage of the chaos.

In a press conference held in the early hours of Saturday morning, Gov. Walz said he is authorizing “full mobilization” of the state’s National Guard, adding 1,000 National Guard to join the 700 already there, calling it “an action that has never been taken in the 164 year history of the Minnesota National Guard.”

“Our goal is to decimate that force as quickly as possible,” Walz said of rioters who looted and burned buildings. “Our cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault.”

Later in the day, Walz said 2,500 guardsmen and women would be activated. He said about 80% of those arrested for looting and vandalism could be outside agitators.

“Our great cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault by people who do not share our values, who do not value life and the work that went into this and are certainly not here to honor George Floyd,” Walz said. “They need to see today that that line will stop and order needs to be restored.”

“Let’s be very clear, the situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd,” he added.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said most of the arrests made last night were of people from out of state and while “there’s a group of folks that are sad and mourning,” he said “there seems to be another group that are using Mr. Floyd’s death as a cover to create havoc.”

Department of Safety Commissioner John Harrington said they are contact-tracing the arrested and added that an investigation is underway about white nationalist groups posting online to encourage their members to use the protests as a cover to create chaos.

He said some of the 40 arrests made in the Twin Cities Friday night were of people linked to white supremacist groups and organized crime.

“The people that are doing this are not Minneapolis residents,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said. “They are coming largely from outside the city outside the region to prey on everything we have built.”

On Saturday afternoon, President Donald Trump said military police were ready to deploy to Minneapolis if the governor asked.

“We have our military ready, willing and able, if they ever want to call our military. We can have troops on the ground very quickly,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “They’re using their National Guard right now, as you know.”

While the military is prohibited from acting as domestic law enforcement, the Insurrection Act of 1807 give state officials the ability to call for their help.

Protests have spread across the country this week after a police officer was shown on video pushing his knee into the back of Floyd as Floyd begged to be released and that he couldn’t breathe. He was pronounced dead an hour later.

While it is certainly possible that white supremacist groups were involved in these attacks in an attempt to exacerbate the current climate, I think I've seen enough over the past few days to lean on other groups being the driving force. There is enough video evidence, IMO, to showcase that.

So at best, the evidence is inconclusive as opposed to those who are so sure who is driving the violence

Can I just say how darn proud I am to see people from Cleveland pitching in to help those who were vandalized. I don't know if there have been similar thigns taking place in other cities, but I am proud to see Cleveland stepping up for their own.

The evidence does show that 86% of those arrested are Minnesota residents, completely contradicting what the mayor and governor are saying.

I wouldn't be surprised if this mirrors what other cities are saying. We'll see.

During a press conference on Saturday morning (May 30), Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison took the stage together to share new information about the protests, and specifically the looting and violence that accompanied them.

"The people that are doing this are not Minneapolis residents," Mayor Frey said. "They are coming in largely from outside of the city, from outside of the region to prey on everything that we have built over the last several decades."

Ellison cited a now-viral video of a white man in a gas mask holding an umbrella who was caught by protesters breaking windows of a local AutoZone. Some believe the man to be an undercover cop, though that detail has not yet been verified.

Additionally, MSNBC’s Joy Reid tweeted that white nationalist groups are posting messages promoting that they use the protests to “get our loot on” and cause mayhem. Mayor Carter says the state’s top officials discovered that the white nationalist mayhem starters are throwing incendiary devices and then running behind actual protesters to “use them as a human shield.”

Vice reports that numerous militia, anti-government and white supremacist groups have shown up to protests across America. The latter group is allegedly hoping to use the tensions between them, law enforcement and police violence protesters as the spark of a race war.
