My dad passed away before Kaep began kneeling. But I already knew what his reaction would be. Because protests aren't a "new thing". There have been protests conducted in my lifetime since the early 60's. For civil rights. Against the Vietnam war. The list only grows from there.
He was a Mstr. Sgnt. in the Army. In every case where protests happened, I asked him his opinion. He was sometimes hesitant in telling me his personal feelings about particular protests. Because in his mind, that part of it didn't matter.
His consistent reply all boiled down to this...
He told me that he dawned the uniform of the U.S. Army to uphold an insure the constitutional rights of every American. He said that is the reason we fight for our nation. We fight to maintain those freedoms. As such, everyone has the right to peacefully protest any way they see fit. He expressly believed that right should not be infringed upon nor diminished.

Why should they "raise hell"?
Protest? Sure. My daughter and her boyfriend were at a protest. He's Mexican (his word), but on here I guess I have to say he's Latino.
There were perhaps 50 people, many Latino, many "white", not many black. Maybe 2? (we don't have a large black population here.) Downtown, on the sidewalk. No blocking the street, no looting, no cops, rioting. Just a group of around 50 people, holding signs, some kneeling. He, the boyfriend, was surprised how many people honked, yelled out the car windows - in SUPPORT of them.
Had they raised hell, broken windows, stopped traffic, etc - there would've been cops, arrests, etc.
I'm certainly not telling anyone HOW to protest.

Context is everything arch. Maybe you should actually look at what I was responding to first?
It had nothing to do with riots or even the current events going on at this time. I'll try and sum it up for you.
Vers was discussing why in a school he was teaching in there was a quota for blacks in getting awards but not for Latinos. Of course he went to a place that was based on someone's opinion that was negative.
It basically said that it's because the Latinos weren't raising hell and screaming about it. Thus my response. So your response to my post holds no value in terms of my comment.
You do understand that keeping you informed on what the hell is going on here gets taxing at times, right?

You replied totally out of context to my post. It's okay arch. Your comments to my post had nothing to do with it and I made that clear. You're just having trouble manning up to it.

I defended Kaep back when it happened. To me, it was a peaceful protest, he checked with a veteran and changed it from sitting to kneeling and maybe it's just me, but I view the sacrifices our military provided mean we don't have to stand, it's suggested, but we have the freedom to stand or not. Heck, he came out a few times and said his kneeling was no disrespect to the military or the flag, he was just doing it to bring attention to a specific problem. Outside of not voting and those dumb socks, most of what he was doing was benign.
Maybe some of you remember this, but I also defended Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf back in '96 when the Kaep stuff was hot too. He took it one step further than Kaep by sitting and saying the flag is an oppressive symbol to him. I defended his right to express that message, even though I didn't believe that, but I was also a naive 20-something dork. Turns out, the NBA suspended him and he agreed to later stand by close his eyes. Jeez, the NBA has come a long way. They reacted worse than the NFL did with Kaep.
It would be interested in seeing Silver get asked why the league reacted one way in 96 and another way now. I wouldn't ask as "gotcha journalism", but to really get his opinion.
As for Brees, it was tone deaf. He didn't read the room and wanted to tell everyone, specifically blacks, this is how I want you to do this. I don't think he's a racist, but again, couldn't read the room and found himself telling people what to do in a time where we're supposed to be listening, not critiquing.
I do feel bad that he got "canceled" and probably received thousands of death threats. He may have to retire too. I won't feel bad there because he's worth millions and he's old. I was never a fan of his. I do wish people tried to understand his message a bit more, even as inappropriate as it was, he wasn't trying to be controversial. He had recently donated $5M to the food banks of New Orleans for Covid relief. So his hearts in the right place, but he placed his foot in his mouth and kept talking about what HE thinks people should feel. Bad look.
It may sounds I'm defending him, I'm not. He screwed up and he did later apologize (granted, after getting crushed - I don't give him too much credit for that). I don't like seeing anyone "canceled" for a comment, unless it's blatantly awful. A comment made in ignorance shouldn't ruin you forever. Believe me, I'd said some stupid things. We all have.
I read Pop's comments last night. Damn, that was brilliant. I liked Kendrick Perkins response to it even more.
Yes, it sucks we're living in a time where if you say A, you're good, but if you say B through Z, you're a racist. That's scary, because I like talking, I like playing devil's advocate, I like challenging people (both sides) and that's hard to do if one word could label you forever.
I remember being a freshman in college. Someone invited a few black Toledo football players over for some drinks and we got to talk about race on campus, Toledo, my white neighborhood and the future. I learned so much that evening because I had grown up in a cocoon, that I still carry it with me today. I didn't know strangers from such different backgrounds could have such a charged conversation, never yell, understand each other, even disagree at times but in the end shake hands and share a beer. I thought it was a proud moment in my life.

Sure it did. What I stated was fact. Look, I know you are the queen of having the last word, of changing topics, etc.
You may think you're helping things, but you're becoming a petulant person. You may think you're making some point, somewhere in your head, but what you're really doing is creating a bigger divide. Congrats.

He should be forced to kneel for the National Anthem for the next five seasons by the NFL. If he's even good enough to stay in the league that long.

I hate to interrupt your little tit for tat,but I have a comment more a question about Brees,if I may. I understand his feelings about service men and women and also respect for the flag,I think most Americans feel that way. He has been around the NFL a long time,he should know what kind of [censored] storm, especially now,his comments would raise. Why would he do it?Why not the standard "no comment"?Has he had alot of concussions?

It's not MY tit for tat, it's pits.
As to your question, I think Brees was saying what he felt. He IS allowed to have an opinion after all.
He's back tracking because of the sentiment he received.

Ted Cruz calls Drew Brees' anthem-kneeling apology 'sadly predictable,' rips pro sports“Sadly predictable. Pro sports have become PC speech police, terrified of offending the angry Left. Words you can no longer say in today’s NFL: ‘I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America....,’” Cruz wrote. https://www.foxnews.com/sports/ted-cruz-drew-brees-anthem-kneeling-apology-sadly-predictable

I have many opinions but I'm smart enough to keep them to myself in certain situations, most of the time. I wasn't questioning his rights,I was questioning his lack of awareness.

Brees has shown in the past to be a man of good intent. What he did for the city of NO after the hurricane. Money he has donated to causes to help others.
However, initially I think he misinterpreted what Kap and his actions were about.
He saw it as disrespecting the flag and then internalized that as dishonoring those who have served.
After he then reached out and talked to others he came to realize the "kneel" was about protesting what we all know to be true. Black and brown people are racially profiled and treated differently by the police. And more cases of police brutality are committed against them.
Brees came back and apologized. Said he missed what this was about.
I don't believe a man of his quality should be dragged through the street and be labeled as some kind of white hate symbol.

I would encourage you to try and research Kaep's story. Most of the old articles about his initial intentions are hard--or impossible--to find. There were two leaders of the black advocacy movement who recognized the potential of what Kaep's kneeling could mean to their movement. I am not saying that in a negative way. It was intelligent on their part. I listened to interviews of them speaking about it as I was traveling to my Ohio home from SC when all this started. They were on the Stephen A. Smith radio show on ESPN. Kaep wasn't even on board. It was more about his girlfriend than his beliefs. These guys coached Kaep and said it was difficult. I have to say that both of those guys were supremely intelligent and articulate. They were also fair. They were almost drooling --rightfully so--at the attention the kneeling could create for their movement. This crap about Kaep being the mastermind is fabricated. Here is a real hero of the movement and most folks probably never even heard of him. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the former NBA player who refused to stand for the national anthem two decades ago. “Whether I go broke, whether they take my life, whatever it is, I stood on principles. To me, that is worth more than wealth and fame,” Abdul-Rauf told The Undefeated last September. The league blackballed him because of his unwillingness to cease protesting. This dude did it for legit reasons. Not to appease his girlfriend and make money. He gets no attention, but he is a true hero, because his motivation was pure. I keep asking that folks educate themselves on this issue, but it's gotten to the point that if you don't bow down and agree w/certain people, you are a racist or a Trumpian. Dudes are not approaching this fight w/the right mindset. The idea should be to recruit help rather than alienate the very same people you want to help you. It's freaking mind-boggling. The only explanation I can come up with is that certain people are just as biased and hateful as those they despise. Two wrongs do not create a right. We are doomed to fail until we begin to judge each other as individuals instead of making broad evaluations of entire groups of people.

I wish we could waive the two-term limit for presidents, because I would vote for Obama yet again. He is a far better candidate than the two idiots who are running this upcoming election.
I really have no idea why folks would hate Obama, other than the usual biases.

Who are we, as white Americans, to tell black Americans how to protest?
What gives us the right to tell a minority individual what to do so they won’t upset the majority? Would you have let Rosa Parks sit on the bus if it was going to upset people?

If I were Drew Brees I'd tell these people to stick it. They need to learn that not everyone is going to have the same opinion as them and accept it. Stop being such whining cry babies.

I grew up in a military family, and lived on base in military housing until I was 10. I grew up believing to respect our flag and anthem, and I still do. The only reason I see as ligitimate for not standing for our national anthem is if you are incapable of standing. I still face a flag and remove my hat if I'm wearing one when I hear the anthem playing from a nearby base.
I know our country isn't perfect, and I know it never will be. I still think it's the best place in the world to be, otherwise people wouldn't risk their lives and fortunes to get here. We need to do our best to make things better, and I will never be convinced that path is to tear it all down, burn our history, and make the country something it was never intended to be.

I made a post on white fragility which I'm sure was ignored by the right leaning posters here, but I can't help but notice how these racism threads are rife with examples. They don't even know they are doing it.
