85 infants have tested positive for coronavirus in 1 Texas county as U.S. sets new record
"These babies have not even had their first birthdays yet. Please help us to stop the spread of this disease," the Nueces County public health director said.
More than 80 infants under a year old have tested positive for the coronavirus in one Texas county, a local public health official announced, as the United States set a single-day record in the tally of new cases.
The public health director in Nueces County on the Texas Gulf Coast said at a meeting Friday that a review of coronavirus statistics showed that 85 infants in the county have tested positive.
"These babies have not even had their first birthdays yet," director Annette Rodriguez said. "Please help us to stop the spread of this disease. Stay social distanced from others; stay protected. Wear a mask when in public and for everyone else please do your best to stay home."
Rodriguez did not provide further details on the babies' conditions.
The Nueces County medical examiner, Adel Shaker, told NBC News on Saturday that a 6-week-old boy who died last week tested positive for the virus. Shaker said he has not determined if COVID-19 was the cause of death and is running more tests to find out.
Her announcement came as the U.S. set a single-day record with 75,775 newly-reported cases of the virus, according to NBC News' tally. The death toll in the country has now passed 140,000.
Globally, more than 14 million people have tested positive for the virus, and more than 600,000 have died, according to data by Johns Hopkins University and NBC News.
In India, the number of cases has surpassed one million, with 26,273 deaths, according to the counry's health ministry website.
And, in Latin America and the Caribbean, the death toll has surpassed that in the U.S. and Canada for the first time. Only Europe has recorded more fatalities. Brazil, where more than two million cases of coronavirus have been reported, could have the world’s highest number of deaths from the virus by late this month.
Latin America accounts for over 50 percent of global deaths even though it accounts for just 8 percent of the world's population.
In terms of confirmed cases, Brazil is number two globally, just behind the United States. Peru now has the world’s fifth highest number of confirmed cases. Mexico comes in seventh.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said this week that the region’s per-capita gross domestic product is likely to drop by 9.1 percent in 2020 due to the pandemic, The Associated Press reported.
Such a drop would take the region back to GDP levels of 2010, something the U.N. commission called “a lost decade.”

I think its the point where they've fined and thrown people in to jail over not following guidelines. Setting up hotlines to "tell on your neighbor" isn't something anyone normally views as a good thing.
This is supposed to be a public health crisis, but it isn't being handled like one. Case in point: our county "Karen" line receives a phone call from a citizen who reports too many people in the local Starbucks not maintaining distancing and not wearing enough masks. The response they are given is to call the police.
Now, distancing, masks, capacity... those are all health regulations. Isn't it strange that the Health Dept isn't going out to investigate and levy any consequences like they would do at any other time? Normally if they investigate a place that is not up to par on sanitation, they are the ones to issue fines and close doors. They don't call the police for that.
Personally I'm not sold on the idea that making people wear masks is some form of gov't control, even with making a health issue a criminal issue. I think that the Governors who made it a crime didn't actually think it through. I think they simply thought they could use the police to intimidate people in to compliance. I don't think any serious thought was given to just how far they wanted the police to go in enforcing them.
At least that's the reasoning for some people. Clearly there's a % of people "you can't tell me nothin!".

Yea I’m not with throwing people in jail over that whatsoever. You and I are on the same page with that.
But damn bro, there’s no reason for these people to act like the government is putting a M-16 in their hands and telling them to go fight the Vietcong.

That's interesting... last week our local news reported that at least 50% of all of our cases in our county were from the LatinX community.
I'm curious as to what's pushing that trend line?
I think there has to be a genetic component. I don't have hard data but subjectively, the Latinos that I have seen with Covid in my hospital tend to be sicker.

I am just going to post the title and a link to the article because there are a ton of photos and a chart that probably need to be viewed to offer some context to the text.
I do think folks should take the time to explore this news.

Hundreds of armed anti-mask protesters gather outside the Ohio statehouse
I am commenting on my previous post of the opposing groups protesting outside the Ohio Statehouse.
I know there are some people on here who don't like me saying that we should come together and not try to further the divide, but we are entering dangerous territory.
That situation could have turned extremely violent. And once deadly encounters crop-up, all bets are off on what will transpire afterwards.
The conditions are ripe for an all-out race or class war. This is extremely dangerous. The sides are so far apart on how they view the current climate. I do not think that we can ever convince the extremists on different sides to tone it down, but us more rational folks need to take a step-back and really analyze what is going on and all the possible consequences of these polar movements.
For the safety of all Americans, we cannot let the radicals on both sides dictate how we move forward.
The sad part, 40% of Americans will still vote donald rump. He will go down as one of the worst presidents of all time.
Rural Ohio, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves.
You know who should be ashamed??? Republicans and Democrats. Last election we were stuck with Trump VS Clinton. This time we are stuck with Trump vs Biden. Nothing but hot garbage from both parties. Porky says it best
First let me state I'm not an advocate of locking people up over not wearing a mask. But let me pose something to you.
The spread of this virus and the amount of people it has killed since March is alarming. By the end of July it will have killed more than an average of 30,000 people a month over the last five months. That will be a total of 150,000 deaths in 5 months.
Excluding suicides, there were 15,292 gun deaths in the U.S. in 2019. 38,800 people lost their life in auto accidents during 2019.
So at what point and what does the total death count have to be in order for people to understand that not wearing a mask is helping to kill people?
And at what point, I mean how many more thousands of people need to die before we realize that not wearing a mask is actually a crime against humanity?
It's odd how our citizens realize that gun deaths and auto accidents are law enforcement issues but killing people by not wearing masks is a "freedom" issue.
According to that line of thought there should be no traffic laws and murdering people with a gun you shouldn't have the cops involved.

makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever. such garbage that they want funding cut.
i guess if i get rid of the scale, i wont gain any weight.

If masks become mandatory statewide, then I say fine the hell out of people who refuse to wear them! And if they want to get all 'Karen' while you are ticketing them or they do crap like cough in somebody's face being an ass, arrest them and let them think about it in jail.
Trump Shrugs Off COVID Death Toll in Fox News Interview: ‘It Is What It Is’ The Daily Beast Justin Baragona ,The Daily Beast•July 19, 2020
President Donald Trump refused to believe that America has one of the highest coronavirus mortality rates in the world and brushed off the rising death toll from the pandemic during a combative and contentious Sunday interview with Fox News anchor Chris Wallace.
In his first interview with the veteran news anchor in nearly two years, the president immediately grew incensed when Wallace pressed him on the surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, something that Trump has insisted is due to just “burning embers” and increased testing.
“That’s because we have great testing, because we have the best testing in the world. If we didn’t test, you wouldn’t be able to show that chart,” Trump grumbled. “If we tested half as much, those numbers would be down.”
Wallace, meanwhile, pointed out that this “isn’t burning embers” but more like a “forest fire,” prompting Trump to retort that he’ll “put out the flames” of those “embers” before complaining that other countries are also dealing with rising cases.
“Why don't they talk about Mexico?” Trump bellowed. “Which is not helping us. And all I can say is thank God I built most of the wall because if I didn't have a wall up we would have a much bigger problem with Mexico.”
The Fox host, highlighting numbers from Johns Hopkins University, shot back that the United States currently has the “seventh highest mortality rate in the world” and that the European Union is currently banning American travelers.
Trump, however, falsely claimed that America has among the lowest fatality rates, asking White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany to bring him a document to prove him right. He further accused Wallace of being “fake news.” Wallace, for his part, inserted a separate reporting segment at that point in the interview, informing viewers that the White House used a misleading chart to make Trump’s case.
The president would continue to assert that the only reason American cases are spiking is due to increased testing, causing Wallace to retort that while testing has risen by 37 percent, cases are up 194 percent and the positivity rate has increased in recent weeks.
After the president claimed the vast majority of cases were just young people “with the sniffles,” Wallace said he was going to do Trump “a favor” by allowing him to convince the audience that he isn’t playing down the virus.
“I can tell you the death chart is 1,000 cases a day,” Wallace added when the president insisted he was taking the pandemic seriously.
“Excuse me, it's all too much, it shouldn't be one case,” Trump shot back. “It came from China, they should have never let it escape, they should have never let it out but it is what it is.”
Wallace also pressed Trump on his administration’s attempts to smear top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, which Trump blamed solely on one single White House official going rogue. At the same time, Trump made sure to say that Fauci is an “alarmist” and has been “wrong” on the pandemic many times.
The Fox host told Trump that he has been wrong quite a few times himself on the virus, playing him a series of clips showing Trump predicting that the disease would quickly disappear and cases would soon go down to zero.
“I’ll be right eventually,” he confidently stated. “I said it's going to disappear, I will say it again...and I’ll be right.”
It's really sad. I wonder if there are supporters somewhere that think Trump did well in this interview or that think Wallace is out to get Trump or something. IDK. I find it more than a little worrying.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Well he is correct when he says he'll eventually be right that it is going to disappear. It may 2 years or 200 years but yes it will eventually disappear.
The difference between Jesus and religion Religion mocks you for having dirty feet Jesus gets down on his knees and washes them
But essentially it's. Type of brain washing. You stick to your few talking points then you skew the "information" you provide to resonate with either the fears or ego of your audience, you coach them on gaslighting arguments and perceived weaknesses in the Democrats arguments etc. Whether it's Limbaugh or Shipiro or anyone in between it's the same basic playbook.
The reality is both sides do this.
The really scary part is is that both sides think only the other side does it.
This country is in for some dark times ahead. The amount of stupidity you see on both sides is alarming and scary.
Was away for a week with limited and poor internet (hence a few double posts) ... did see this and say I agree with you. Both sides definitely do it. With that said over the last 20 years I have spent time driving through many, many states: Great Lakes, Mid west, AZ/CA/NM/TX and then the last 8 years in the South east .... my personal experience when scanning radio stations to find either a Classic Rock station or local NPR station .... there are far more stations and programs that cater to the hard right than the hard left. I think TV stations you can easily argue are a wash - MSNBC and FOX being the two big names from that pool. But radio.... A quick (unverified) google search comes up with: ""What percentage of radio hosts are liberal? Among those who regularly listen to talk radio, 41% are Republican and 28% are Democrats. Furthermore, 45% describe themselves as conservatives, compared with 18% who say they are progressive/liberals."" ..... although on another link I saw it mentioned how liberal podcasts have rapidly become available since Trump was elected.
Leaning left or right and having an agenda is fine in my opinion and not the issue - the division and cranking out known false information is the real issue.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
President Trump’s failure to contain the coronavirus outbreak and his refusal to promote clear public-health guidelines have left many senior Republicans despairing that he will ever play a constructive role in addressing the crisis, with some concluding they must work around Mr. Trump and ignore or even contradict his pronouncements.
In recent days, some of the most prominent figures in the G.O.P. outside the White House have broken with Mr. Trump over issues like the value of wearing a mask in public and heeding the advice of health experts like Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, whom the president and other hard-right figures within the administration have subjected to caustic personal criticism.
They appear to be spurred by several overlapping forces, including deteriorating conditions in their own states, Mr. Trump’s seeming indifference to the problem and the approach of a presidential election in which Mr. Trump is badly lagging his Democratic challenger, Joseph R. Biden Jr., in the polls.
So just a little taste of how the far right has treated me in the last week.
I have been told I should just die and quit screwing up young folks lives.
I have been told I should just move into my basement and stay there for 1 and 1/2 to 3 years until a vaccine is found.
I have been told there is no cure for corona as none is needed since it is all made up.
I have been told that I need my ass kicked since I don't agree that nobody needs to wear a mask or social distance.
I was told by one guy that he knows all about corona since he has been a scientist for 18 years.. Turns out he has worked as a lab tech for the Cleveland Clinic for 17 months while teaching auto mechanics on the side, and was a mechanic for ten years prior to that.
Was accused of slut shaming folks who won't wear masks and told how wrong I am for that yet also told by the same person I had no right to bring up that I could die with covid because of folks like him because he was so upset with being slut shamed.
I have been dealing with the public for 37 years but today I have to admit they are getting more stupid, rude, and ignorant by the day

I’ve never been criticized for doing the right thing. That’s something that.....man bro I know I don’t have to tell you this but just keep your head up.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. just a week or two ago, he called Biden a coward for wearing one.
too little, too late. can't be leader if you're the last one doing anything. only did this because i guarantee he got the internal polling from the RNC....and it wasn't good.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
I drove down to Lake Norris this past weekend to do some boating. We stopped for gas somewhere in Kentucky.....dude openly telling the gas clerk after seeing me with my mask on how stupid masks where and that they did nothing.
Then said "I only know 2 people who have had it and it wasn't that bad".....
Cool dude, I don't know anyone....because we wear masks maybe?
Not one person in the entire state of Tennessee was wearing a mask other than the workers that I saw.
Well after 140,000 deaths he finally realized trying play off wearing masks was killing him and decreasing his chances of ever getting reelected. So now he is trying to reinvent his stand like people believe anything he says anymore.
