In defense of Florida, the weather attracts a lot of riff raff from other states.

A big cardboard box and sheet of plastic or blue tarp keeps you dry enough most of the time. Temps rarely drop all that low. Then you wrap up in the tarp when it gets in the 40's..

Yup, most of us have come from Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York. So people should remember that those Florida stories are often people who came from their home state. smile

I think he should be brought up on charges of attempted murder. JMO

California has the most homeless people. I think about 25 percent of all homeless people reside in California.

Rounding out the top 5 are:

2. New York [most are in NYC]
3. Florida
4. Texas
5. Washington

Also, the MAC just cancelled football for the year - will try to play spring football I guess.

More schools/leagues/conferences, from h.s. to college, will follow suit soon I'm sure.

No doubt.

I feel bad for the kids. Some of them might have been pushing for a scholarship. The kids who were 4-5 star juniors will still get one, but the 3 star or 2 star who were looking to move up won't get that chance.

They will have to walk on or go to some smaller school.

In a way, a smaller school might be better long term.

That is so messed up.

In a previous thread where this was the subject, I asked if a one-year stop-out (until this pandemic was under control) was ever in consideration for your family. I don't think you saw it, because I'm sure you would have answered.

Gotta ask: if 100% remote was an option, would you guys have considered that?

I don't like any parts of this policy. The liabilities far outweigh any profits they may glean from this short-sighted approach. It's far wiser to protect your cash stream long-term than to take such a risky approach. And here's why I take the stance I do:

All these colleges and Universities have massive endowments they've been sitting on for decades. As is right and proper. Why have an endowment in the hundreds of ML's or even BL's? For times just like this. It's the 'rainy day fund' that no one wants to touch. Well... there's a deadly global pandemic out there, so I'd say it's already raining *'n buckets. In other words: "if not now, when?"

The responsible thing would be to protect these students for a year, when we'll know more and/or have a vaccine.

I can't imagine what this situation must be like for you.

Nah, I saw your post.

There's a fine line between what dad wants, what the college demands, and what Sooga wants.

She is dead set on getting schooling done. She should be able to get into the school of nursing after this semester............but most likely only be able to start the school of nursing in the summer semester as the fall semester is already full, and the summer semester is one most kids don't want. It would be summer semester, then fall semester, off spring semester, then back for summer, and fall.

I've point blank asked her if she really wanted to be going to school in the summer (it's an intensive course) when all of her friends would be at home for the summer.

Her reply: I don't care, I want to do this, and the sooner, the better.

I've spoken before about her first semester in college, and her chem prof sucking and being put on probation by the U.of T......which did nothing for her, gpa wise.

Sooga, if you want to be a nurse, that gpa needs to go way up. You're not getting into the school of nursing with a 2.8 I think it was.

Second semester, with chem 2, she got a 3.7 gpa. Stats this summer from the local CC, 3.7 gpa.

I never knew she had that determination..............she'll make it. She's got a brother to show up. She's not caring about summers off and having fun. She's caring about summer's ON, and getting school out of the way.

Sounds like you did a good job raising her.

Does she have to live on campus or just paay to live on campus?
If all her classes are on line, and you want her to live a home to say safe from the coronavirus, could you not pay the room and board, show up day #1, put some sheets on then bed, then drive her home and have her live with you until things settle out?

Granted, you end up paying for the room and board that she wouldn't be using but I think that is really what the university is interested in. The money, not having her actually living on campus.

If they try to make a stink about it, the argument is that they are not keeping up their end of the contract. She is supposedly required to live on campus the 1st 2 years to get the true college experience which they are not in actuality providing.

You could argue that ahead of time but I am sure that would end up needed lawyers etc which undoubtedly would be a more expensive option.

Just tossing out some thoughts.
I suspect that she is looking forward to being on campus.

She has 1 class that is in person, after it was designated as on line, but got re-designated to in person. As of today. Next week, next month, I truly expect it to change, and I am fully aware that within a month of classes starting, they will probably close the campus, again.

I do not have the money to fight the university in a lawsuit. Not even a class action law suit. (you know full damn well if it came to that, names would be listed......and those listed would somehow fail classes)

It is what it is. Sooga has, as of today, ONE in person class. The school requires on campus living for freshman and sophomores.

Her ONE in person class will undoubtedly be changed to on line, and we'll get a pittance of a refund.

Look, I love the U. of T. - great school. But, as with every school/business - it's all about money. Other than my business. I treat people fair. Period.

an increase of 32%... so, if it is current at 1% it would increase to 1.32%.

Still, that is a SIGNIFICANT increase.
There are cities in Ohio with their property tax over 4%... these sorts of shenanigans could easily add hundreds of dollars per month to someones house payment.

Oh really Ohio has the same property tax rate in the entire state. Let me put this in terms you can understand 1+1 does not equal 32 Diam.

My butt does not hurt at all, so stop projecting your problems on me. Ohio has 88 counties, and each and every one of them has different tax rates and rules. So take your butt hurt problem and enjoy it yourself in private.

No, it doesn't.
It varies by county & municipality.

Property taxes for a person living in Shaker Heights, OH is vastly higher than someone living in Coshocton, OH (it's more than double).

There is a state rate, and other millages added by voters for things like schools, heath, fire, and safety, and other things that somehow never get funded from the things they are supposed to.

That’s cause I told them to redirect all revenue to a space elevator.

Should be done in a few months.

No doubt. However, and I don't live in Ohio anymore, so I might be wrong, but it would be highly unusual for the state rate to change by counties or cities. That is usually set state wide.

Higher rates are usually determined by the school system, garbage services, the number of police you want on the streets at night. If Shaker Heights wants 1 policeman to patrol the city at night, it cost this. If you want to divide the town up in to 6 districts, with an officer in each, it costs this.

You get what you pay for. They have the coin, so they pay for it
