The Dallas Cowboys are signing quarterback Garrett Gilbert off the practice squad of the Browns, a person familiar with the move said Monday night, confirming an NFL Network report.
Each NFL team can protect four practice squad players a week beginning on Tuesdays. Those players cannot sign with another franchise before the week's games are played.
The Browns had been protecting Gilbert every week, but there is an opening on Mondays, and the Cowboys took advantage of the window. They added Gilbert as depth a day after they lost starter Dak Prescott to a season-ending ankle injury.
The timing is less than ideal for the Browns because starter Baker Mayfield has injured ribs after taking a hit from Indianapolis Colts defensive end Justin Houston in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 32-23 win. X-rays taken after the game were negative, and Mayfield said he'll push through the injury to play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Case Keenum is his backup, and Gilbert, a close friend of Mayfield, is headed back to their home state of Texas.
Gilbert, 29, has appeared in six regular-season NFL games, but he has never started one. The Browns signed him in April 2019 after the Alliance of American Football folded while he led the league in completions and passing yards.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I'm confused. We protected him, but there's a window (each week?) where you can grab whoever off of a practice squad? What's the point of protecting a player if the stealing team just has to wait a day or two?

What's the point of protecting a player if the stealing team just has to wait a day or two? What is poaching? Practice squad players want to be 53-man roster, NFL players. The NFL allows a practice squad player to be signed by another team, if they are going to put him on their 53-man roster. When this happens, the player is giving a guaranteed three-week salary and he is added to the 53-man roster for three weeks - even if the team decides to release him before those three weeks are up. There are other rules as well, including limiting when a team can sign a practice squad player from their next opponent (six days prior to the game, or ten days if he is on a bye week), but those are not major ones you need to understand the practice squad.

j/c Bummer about Garrett. I was looking through some other teams' practice squads last night (hangover from years of pathetic QBs and burning through starters, backup and street FAs) and I wondered if Dallas might go after Garrett...I figured he was "protected". Fun facts and 15 seconds you won't get back: Both of Buffalo's Practice Squad DTs are former Browns in Brandin Bryant and Justin Zimmer; Billy Winn is on Green Bay's Practice squad. I focused on DTs (and "good" teams) because I think they are more plug-and-play than are the back (7). I also looked for players on the various 53s who we could try and trade for. I realized that that was rather fruitless because all I knew where the "name" guys...who are likely too expensive and/or too old to make sense. I saw ALex Mack on that decrepit Atlanta team and felt bad for the guy...he went from awful team that's always rebuilding and firing coaches/FO...to a couple good years of runs...to an awful team in need of rebuilding who just fired their coach/FO. I think Kessler, Kizer ans Stanton are all still available.

Billy Winn wasn’t terrible for us. Forgot all about him.
It’s also too bad Caleb Brantley didn’t mature and work out

But I thought this year they increased practice squad size and introduced 'protections', where you can keep a certain # of players on the PS w/o fear of them being poached. From Grateful's post, it sounded like we were protecting Garrett (until we weren't?).

More protection The NFL also added a new wrinkle to the practice squad that provides teams with some limited protections for keeping practice squad players. Teams can designate four players every week that are protected from being signed by other teams. This protection starts on Tuesday each week, so every practice squad player is still available to be signed to the regular roster of another team after their team’s game that week until the deadline on Tuesday. from https://www.hogshaven.com/2020/9/5/21419...n-football-teamI think this is a stupid rule. You can protect a guy on the practice squad except from Sunday evenings until Tuesday morning. I don't really understand the point.

Garrett leaving likely doesn’t matter either way. He’s a practice squad QB. If he ever had to play the season is sunk anyway.

I see Gilbert as Keenum’s possible replacement ... not a big deal to lose him. Ceiling of an average backup I’d assume

I suppose you're referring to this..... Giants rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta arrested, charged with eluding police and resisting arrest As the Giants possibly consider a change at the quarterback position, one of their two backups has likely withdrawn himself from consideration. On Tuesday morning, Giants fourth-round rookie Kyle Lauletta was arrested and charged with eluding police, resisting arrest, and obstructing administration of law in addition to motor vehicle charges like reckless driving and disregarding an officer's directions. According to Weekawken Police, police officers stationed at a congested intersection spotted Lauletta driving recklessly. He "attempted to evade" the police officer who directed him to continue in his lane, the police's press release reads. Police say that as Lauletta evaded the officer with an illegal turn, he nearly struck the officer. After Lauletta was stopped by another officer, police say he refused their instructions to provide his driving credentials and exit the car. In their release, police also noted that Lauletta "was involved in a similar incident at the same location" on Monday. Here's the entire release: Lauletta, drafted with the 108th overall pick out of Richmond, has been stuck behind both Eli Manning and Alex Tanney on the depth chart. He's not yet been active for a game. In a statement, the Giants said that they are aware of the situation. "We were made aware of the situation this morning, and we have been in contact with Kyle," Giants coach Pat Shurmur said, per ESPN. "We are still in the process of gathering information. This is obviously very disappointing." Meanwhile, Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley said that he was "really surprised" by the news. "I know Kyle really well and it was definitely shocking," he said. "I don't know too much about it to speak on it, to be honest, but I know it's really nothing probably. I know it sounds crazy, but I know it's probably nothing crazy because of the person he is." Lauletta's arrest wouldn't prohibit the Giants from benching Manning, who has continued to struggle and looks to be at the tail end his career, with Tanney as their backup. But Tanney, 30, doesn't have a long-term future with the Giants. There's really no point in benching a franchise icon like Manning for a player who doesn't have a chance to become their new franchise quarterback. Lauletta was always a long-shot to turn into that guy, but he had at least had a chance to do so. What will be interesting to monitor is how they handle the Lauletta situation. He was a fourth-round pick, which makes him very cuttable, but the Giants already cut 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb. The Giants, who still need a new franchise quarterback, probably won't want to cut two developmental prospects in the same year. At 1-7, however, the Giants should be in a perfect position to draft their new franchise quarterback in next year's draft, assuming they don't pass on a quarterback for a playmaker again. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/giant...sisting-arrest/
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Blake Bortles was released by Denver. He's gotta be better than Lauletta or whatever his name is, right? Didn't Jax go something like 13 and 3 w/him one year and give NE all they wanted in the AFC Championship game?

Something's up with him if he couldn't beat out Driskell or Rypien to be the backup to Drew Lock.

I was thinking that, too. He's not very good, but I have to think his experience alone makes him better than Lauletta. Hopefully, we'll never have to go to playing a 3rd string qb.

Actually there was no hidden or loaded message in there. He's really bad. The Jags caught a little bit of lightning in a bottle that year.
And no, Baker is nowhere near as bad.

Being pressured doesn’t mean you have to be bad. There are plenty of QBs that thrive when pressured. Our QB panics.
