This damn virus could very well be our undoing if we don't get on top of it and soon. Trump's had 8 months or so to get on top of this; what makes you think he will direct any progress in his short time remaining as POTUS?

If strict controls had been enacted/enforced back in Feb/March, this pandemic would have been under control by last July. You are correct in saying that it cannot be eliminated and that (stupid, selfish) people will do as they wish. It is late, hopefully not too late...

You really need to look into what "mitigate the damage" means.
Does wearing masks stop the virus? No, but they greatly decrease the spread of it. Does washing your hands and social distancing stop the virus? No, but it helps reduce its spread.
Trump is on tape in March saying he understood that it was airborne. That it was far more dangerous than the flu. Understanding all of that, he refused to tell Americans they should all wear masks. He refused to wear one himself. He refused to set a responsible example for the American people. Something responsible and strong leaders are supposed to do.
He actually did the opposite of attempting to mitigate the spread of this virus. He is doing it to this very day. He was just making fun of Biden in the debate about wearing a big mask and wearing it all the time.
Let me ask you this, if Trump really believes there is a safe, effective vaccine coming late in the year.... since he knew back in March that it was an airborne virus.... that it was far more dangerous than the flu....Why in the hell wouldn't he have been out there supporting everyone wear a mask to help keep the fatalities down? Why wouldn't ha have come out with some national standard? Why would he have downplayed safety measures?
Say what you want to say, but every sane person in this country knows that wearing masks and social distancing help cut down the spread of the virus which cuts down on the fatalities.
Yet even now we will witness Republican rallies with very few people in the crowds wearing masks and those speaking at the rallies won't insist that the people attending wear them either.
At the debate, the Trump family was approached about wearing masks and flat out refused. there's no excuse for that. None.
Your claim goes against every medical expert in this country. Only one party chose to make this some "tough guy" political issue. Maybe it's time you stood up and admit that.

People who think masks will somehow defeat the virus are deranged.
Nothing will solve it. It's like trying to defeat the flu.
The closest we will come to defeating it is the vaccine. But it seems the side effects are pretty bad. So a lot of people might not take it.
And no, strict controls would not stop it. People will do what they want to do. Hang out with friends and family. Not wear masks. Not wash their hands.

People, well, some, forget that the virus is doing exactly what we've been told it will do. And have been told that for 3-6 months.

The goal is not to 'defeat' the virus. It sounds like you're approaching this in a very black-and-white manner. The goal is to slow down the spread as much as reasonably possible. Mask wearing, social distancing, and hand-washing is how we do that.

She knows trump has done the opposite of that. She knows that Trump knew masks would slow down the corpses coming out of our hospitals. She knows Trump doesn't even ask this supporters to wear a mask at his rallies. She knows he's helping kill people.
Speaking of plagues. She'll avoid that part of it like one.

I don't avoid the plague. I go to bars/restaurants on average 3 times per week. If I'm gonna get it, then I will get it. I'm not a frightened snowflake hiding in my house. I just look at the stats on the Georgia government website, and in reality, the risk is very low for my county. But you for sure need to hide in your basement. Or from whereever you type from. Because it's coming for YOU.

jc..
I don't really think we would have had any compliance if we shut down in Feb/March. It wasn't until the 3rd week in March we started to see it wreak havoc on NYC.
Until then, most people though of it more like the bird flu, and it was even longer after that before many parts of the country really started to see it as something more than localized in certain areas.
Americans are stubborn by nature, and don't like being told what to do.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

There is no defense for trump's failure as a leader in a time of crisis.
His "response" to the virus is cost lives.
There was a way this could have been handled and it was not.
It is pure denial to not acknowledge that.
If someone likes trump for other reasons so be it. Everyone is entitled to their take on things.
But in regards to the virus. He knew. He lied. He didn't take the actions necessary to protect the people he took an oath to protect.

How could the Virus have been handled better by a leader of the country???
Maybe copy anything and everything the NZ prime minster did - starting with her address to the Nation back in March.
Maybe not lie or suggest that the Virus is somehow the latest Democratic hoax.
Maybe not suggest that ingesting bleach is a way to treat it.
Maybe not touting (again and again and again) fake medical treatments that were studied and dismissed. So fake that when the POTUS that had touted the treatment got Covid himself, he didn't use.
Maybe not suggest that it was going to disappear like magic.
Maybe tell the nation that it was IMPORTANT to wear a mask when in public - and lead by example.
The list is long.... and I know you will deflect and come up with a funny one liner. So this will have to do for now.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

I bet you have none. You're obviously being deliberately obtuse. I don't know why, but I'm going to break this down for you. Small pieces, and slowly... You asked for suggestions. He offered up an overall example (New Zealand). That line was actually quite a few examples all in one (they did several things differently than we did). The remainder of the lines are (wait for it) SUGGESTIONS (sorry, I don't have italics in quick reply) of what NOT to do when leading a country through a pandemic. On the off chance I haven't lost you already, the inference here is that these should be pretty obvious things that a competent leader would seek to avoid. Basically, not doing those things shows that the pandemic is as serious as he was told and understood it was. Every other country's leader understood and acted on this, largely putting aside politics and stunts to confront an emergency head on. I'm not going to do the whole "Trump is responsible for 210k deaths" shtick because that's dumb, and arguing the percentage of deaths he is responsible for wouldn't be a productive conversation, even if people were trying to take it seriously. The pandemic was not his fault. But to sit there and deflect any sort of criticism on his leadership while this is going on is just.... I'm struggling to find a non-bannable word to describe it.

You're mixing strawman arguments with gaslighting. 1. If those things I "whined" about that Trump mishandles SO SO SO badly, hadn't been mishandled ..... we would be in better shape. 2. You asking me to "fix it now" doesn't deflect or absolve Trump and his incompetence .... no matter how much you want it to. The damage was done in MARCH and APRIL ... 3. You can't "get rid" of Covid. You can limit it's impact and the loss of life that results... if you take the right precautions and you get everyone on board. AS for your reply to Bonefish ""Seems he did most of that except for the parts that are up to the individual Govenors."" ... no he did most definitely did not.

Dude. Do you not understand Trump isn't making the call on that. It's up to the indivual states. States rights are a thing.
.
Well you are certainly singing from the same hymn sheet as Trump ... 210,000 Americans dead .... and he takes responsibility for nothing. That's a great way to lead! Glad you find this stuff or us funny.

1st - this applies to everything, not just schools 2nd, he left everything up to the governors, providing zero leadership. I guess you don't understand that Trump isn't in the postion to make calls that the Governors need to make. He was on the phone with the Govenors every day. That is leadership. But at the end of the day it's up to the Governors. Because the Covid varied widely from stat to state. Each Govenor had to lead. Some more than others.

Look we disagree - that's fine. One question that does jump out ... was he on the phone with all the governors of every state? Did he lead and help every state equally and without prejudice/preference?
