If anyone remembers in the Raiders game our O only had like 6 possessions. Our D couldn't get them off the field.

Our third down defense MUST improve (that’s pass rush and secondary obviously)

Heck, we saw it against KC down the stretch ... it was a flaw of our defense all year

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

My question is does Woods get a third year if his defense sucks this year?

I'd say that's a question with a lot of moving parts to it, but IF it is determined that the cause of the failures is schematic and calls by the coaching and not injuries, talent level, execution, etc... then, he absolutely would need to be shown the door.

I think, barring injury, that if we are bad but improve then he stays but if we have the same level of suckitude that we had this past season, then no.

Time to produce (and tackle!) on D and get off the field and generate more takeaways, especially in light of the additions and return of the walking wounded. Re-tool, maybe top down. Much easier off we just make it work.

I don't know enough about Woods to say if this was a fair or unfair criticism of mine, but for a guy who's specialty is the secondary I felt like I should have been able to expect he'd have been able to squeeze a bit more out of the back end.

That said, the biggest consistent flaw I saw last year as players being out of position way too often. Signing JJ3 and Walker, two dudes known for being competent signal callers should remedy that.

I think my other concern is what we do with the LBers. I get that Lbers aren't what the Defense is built on, but I'd like for it to be apparent what their job is. It just didn't seem clear last year what it was that our LBers were supposed to be doing.

Huh??? Between Injuries, Covid Woods just didn't have the players for HIS DEFENSE. We were very weak at two of the 3 levels of our Defense. LB and DBs...and when we had Garrett out or playing extremely weak due to his battle with Covid the DL suffered as well. I thought Woods did an excellent job with what we had.

This year with the Vaccine I think we will not have the Pandemic problem of last year. We strengthened our DL with replacing Vernon (who did give us some good games) with youth and I think Malik Jackson is our sleeper investment and a great compliment with Sheldon Richardson. Billings also is in the picture.

We have only UPGRADE
in store with our LBs

And our DBs with JJ3, Hill, Greedy returning healthy and Delpit - joining Ward and Ronnie Harrison Jr.

Add in our upcoming draft with a couple of impact players on the Defense.

Now Woods will have some TALENT to work with and implement in his Defense. I don't think we should judge Woods on the Defense with talent problems - actually I think he did a good job with what we had to work with! I will put an example out there and then drop the MIKE... Sandejo, enough said

I think Woods largely gets a pass per the talent that he had to deal with. That said, I wouldn't feel bad if his seat heated up in record time (ex. like half a season) if the D hasn't yet taken a significant step forward. If he's going to use the talent argument to his advantage for last season, then he has to make good on the talent he's been given when the new season kicks off.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
