Cleveland Browns WR Rashard Higgins cited for drag racing

6:49 PM ET
Jake Trotter
ESPN Staff Writer

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Rashard Higgins was cited for drag racing Tuesday morning.

"We are aware of the incident, will gather more information and handle this matter appropriately," a team spokesman said.

The Elyria Chronicle Telegram first reported the citation, which occurred in Westlake, Ohio, about 10 miles away from the Browns practice facility.

Cleveland's players were off Tuesday.

Higgins later posted on Twitter that his "foot slipped" before deleting the tweet.

Stefanski out vs. Steelers, among 5 positive tests
Higgins had 55 yards receiving in Cleveland's win over the Steelers in Sunday's regular-season finale, which clinched the team's first playoff appearance in 17 seasons. He had to sit out the previous week's game against the New York Jets after being identified as a high-risk close contact to a positive COVID-19 test.

The Browns were slammed with more COVID-19 trouble Tuesday, as head coach Kevin Stefanski, receiver KhaDarel Hodge and Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio were among five to test positive.

Cleveland faces the Steelers again Sunday night in the AFC wild-card game.

Someone needs to dig up news articles from 2005 on Winslow's stupid motorcycle accident to beat it into Hollywood's head how quickly a rising career can turn to crap because you just wanted to have one moment of fun.

These are guys who don’t give a damn about the team or the fans. Very disappointing. The thrill of winning on the field is not enough for people like this.

Boys will be boys. I did the same thing on W56th & Clark Ave when I was 17. I was at a red light and this '67 GTO with chrome headers popping out of the hood pulled up next to me in the outside lane. I had a '68 Ford Fairlane with a factory 302 that was very quick off the line. He revved his engine at me and nodded forward. I ignored him, but I stomped on it when the light changed and so did he - I nearly ran his tricked out Goat into a parked car about 500ft from the light. He braked and sat there until he could move over past the parked car. Yahtzee!

I don't get it. These aren't joe schmoes with nothing to lose but a license. They are professional athletes, in theory, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. In the midst of a pandemic, no less.

Team before person? I guess not. A little youthful fun? Yeah, til you get nailed. Glad no accidents happened.

What the hell is the mindset again?

Only if i need to pass to get into a turn lane and if I can't by them I settle in behind them.

Easy for me to say though, I'm in my mid 40s and I drive a Subaru Crosstrek. grin

He should've kept his mouth shut but I know where he is coming from. People hear "drag racing" and think of two cars flying down a road at high speeds. When in reality it was a couple of cars doing a hole shot.

But one of them was stupid enough to do it with pot in the car, and dumb enough to be driving around wit pot in the car in the first place.

This was stupid for them to do but not a big deal. They were given a ticket....not arrested.

The only thing that is concerning is the rumor of pot. Haven't heard much more of that so hopefully that is a good sign.

If it stands as is, this will fade away like a fart in the wind.

It's not a big deal because there wasn't a worse outcome.
K2 could have easily said "what, nobody ever tried to pop a wheelie on a bike?", or whatever the heck it was he thought he was doing.... simple "nothings" cause more bad endings than egregiously risky decisions.

In the end, it's just a case of "young and dumb"... but, with a heavy emphasis on DUMB.

I don't know that there is anything that will come of this, from outside Berea anyway. The league has entered the mode of sweeping marijuana under the rug, and had already begun last off season. Testing protocol, thresholds, etc, have been eased. Can they really do anything, as a third party, in a minor misdemeanor possession of a joint?

According to reports the cops simply tore up the joint and threw it away. There is no evidence left to bring charges and charges were never filed over the weed.

It's about time we stopped wasting tax payer dollars and giving people a record over a few joints. The idea was stupid to begin with.

I wanna say...??? 1978? 1979?

I had a candy apple red 1969 Nova. 327(not original engine), 4 bolt main, bored 60 over, 12.5-1 pistons, crower solid cam with a 680 lift/378 duration. 202 fuelers, ported, polished, milled, CC'd, hooker headers, accell dual point distributor(also had a "magneeto(?spelling) but it wiped out all TV reception in the neighborhood so...., weigand tunnelram with 2 holly 4 barrel 600's jetted to 660's under the velocity stacks stickin out of the hood. M22 rock rusher 4 speed tranny out of a vette with a Hurst Competion+ shifter, 4 bolt main, Hayes clutch, zoom disk. etc, etc, etc.

Sitting a Euclid Manners(Euclid Manners or Vine St. McDonald's were the big "car meets" every weekend back then) my buddy asks me " hey, wanna run one off"?

Me: Sure.

We went down to E. 260'th and got the red light we needed. Right before the light turned green the other guy yelled "Watch out for Cops". We lit em up. Not 7-10 seconds later a whole lotta "cherries" lit us up. rofl

Both got hit with 115mph? 120mph? in a 35, drag racing, etc, etc.

Went in front of "The Honorable Judge" Robert Niccum.

One of the first " important things" I learned in life.....

ALWAYS GET A LAWYER!!!

We went before "The Honorable" Judge Robert Niccum.

Him w/a lawyer.....Fine, probation.

Me? Meh. I don't need a lawyer. I'll just plead no contest.

Me in court: "Well, we really weren't drag racing. He went a little faster, I went a little faster, he went......etc, etc.

Me. 10 days in jail(suspended 7 days), license suspended for 6mos, etc.

I found out later his nickname was "The Hanging Judge". You can still, just slightly, see the rope marks. rofl

Hey, when you are young you make that mistake.. Apparently, Willis's account must be somewhat accurate because you dont see the speed listed. They need to be quiet, pay the fine.. dont do it again and keep it moving.

But some of this righteousness on this board is funny. At some point, we all have done this same thing.. you just didn't get caught!

When I was ........ much younger ...... I worked in Kent, and on Sunday nights I went to McNasty'' for heavy metal night.

This one Sunday night ..... about 2:45am ..... this girl pulls up next to me at the red light. She flirts a little, then disparages my car a little, saying she could dust me easily ..... anyway .... she's all about getting ready to race, (and I was sure thinking about it ..... buy right before I put foot to gas pedal, I see Kent Police in my side rear view window. I start to yell out that there's a cop behind her ..... but ... to late. She lights 'em up, and immediately the red lights light up. crazy She's busted. I felt bad for her, but I tried to save her.

My first car was my parents old one they just wouldn't trade in because the dealer wouldn't give them jack for it. My dad was a huge fan of fast cars.

It wasn't much to look at and older. My mom had backed it into a telephone pole but it didn't do a lot of damage. It sure didn't look like it would be fast. But looks can be deceiving.

It was a 1967 Olds Delta 88 2 door coupe. The catch is it had an Olds 425 Rocket motor under the hood. A lot of guys in some sharp looking sports cars lost money to me. wink

Oldsmobile's 88 series might have been the first "muscle cars". My dad had an '64 Olds "Dynamic 88" with a 394 CI / 330 HP engine. It wasn't what you'd call quick off the line, because it was so heavy, but you could cruise on the freeway at 90 mph without so much as a tremor from the frame, because the suspension was so good. I think it got 9-10 mpg mileage, but then again, gas was like 35 cents a gallon back then. Loved that car.

Back in the McNasty days, I had a badass 78 Olds Starfire. Olds brought it back in 75? and it was basically a cousin to the Monza.

231 Buick V6, ported 80's model heads (after the engine started going in the Grand National) street cam, hirise intake, 450 carb, 5 speed.

I literally ate 305 Camaros for lunch, one in particular on 59 outside Kent, we left from McNastys. I look back at times like that, leaving a bar, half drunk, and drag racing... I realize how ridiculously stupid I was and how lucky I am to be here.

Left tackle Jedrick Wills downplayed his drag racing citation on Twitter and receiver Rashard Higgins joked about his, but coach Kevin Stefanski thought the incident was serious enough to bring up to the rest of the players.
“We have addressed it. I have addressed it with the team,” Stefanski said Wednesday. “I will leave it at that.”
The players’ lawyers entered not guilty pleas by letter Wednesday to Rocky River Municipal Court, a day after Wills and Higgins were stopped at about 9:30 in the morning on Crocker Road north of Center Ridge Road in Westlake. The area was identified as a work zone in the court filing.
“The two vehicles took off together side by side at a fast rate heading North on Crocker and were racing each other,” stated the expanded Westlake Police report, which was obtained by The Chronicle-Telegram on Wednesday. “The two operators were cited for Drag Racing. The one operator had his vehicle searched from PC (probably cause) based on the smell of marijuana. A suspected marijuana joint was located on him. That item was destroyed and the subject was given a warning. They were released from the scene.”
Higgins was the player with the suspected marijuana.

Awesome post, man!

As for what Higgins and Wills did, it’s a very minor thing. I don’t see why anyone is bothered by it, really. No harm no foul, I say.

I did it.

Also raced Webster Slaughter on 271 South. He in his Datsun 280z and I in my 80 Corvette.

How did I know it was him?

The license plate read "WEBSTAR". thumbsup

Oh, they do give a damn, they just don't give it to the degree that we wish they would.
I'm a graybeard.
It's easy for me to expect a 20-something to exhibit the level of discipline and commitment that comes naturally for me.

Then I remember who I was when I was their age... and I lower my expectations just a bit.

Seems like the right thing to do, given how stupid I was in my early 20's...

Weird thing is, I'm still adding to the list at the same rate (but just different kinds of stupid things).
