AOC proposes funding to deprogram white supremacists

The federal government needs to fund the de-programming of white supremacists and conspiracy theorists, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Friday night.

“The White supremacist cause is futile, it’s nihilist,” AOC, a Democrat who represents parts of The Bronx and Queens, said during a virtual town hall meeting Friday night.

“Their world will never exist. That’s why we’re seeing violence right now.,” she said, speaking in the wake of the violent siege on the US Capitol by radical supporters of President Trump.

“We have to pick up those pieces.”

Ocasio-Cortez said the House subcommittee on civil rights she serves on has held hearings over the prior two years on white supremacy and said there are programs to “de-radicalize” brain-washed adherents.

But she said funding was not a priority for those programs during the Trump years.

“There are people who are radicalized right now. It’s going to take a very long time to de-radicalize these people and a lot of effort,” she said.

“This is a problem that doesn’t go away on Jan. 20,” said the congresswoman, referring to when Trump leaves the White House and is succeeded by President-elect Joe Biden.

She said many fringe radicals operate in a “misinformation bubble” and it will take more than more than one conversation to de-program them, likening it to therapy.

But, she said, research has shown “healing is possible.”

“We need to double, triple or quadruple the funding for these programs,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

AOC said there is a spectrum of radicalization that ranges from sympathizers to conspiracy theorists, to Neo-Nazis. Such radical ideology could lead to violence and domestic terrorism.

She said the conspiracy theory wrongly pushed by Trump that the election was stolen from him radicalized his supporters who invaded the Capitol last week, leading to violence and the death of five people. AOC said she felt her life was threatened.

Please cite anywhere that there are programs being funded to deprogram white supremacists? Show me where federal dollars are being spent in an attempt to "deprogram gay people".

And I'm not sure where you get the gay deprogramming by the government. That was a reference to Christians doing that I think. And not every program funded by the government is government run, so you need to look at grants as funding for them.

No I don't DC, but you can think whatever you want about me, it's all good. I just want people who bought into the lies so hard that they would do something like attempt a coup, brought to justice. Then I want there to be professional help for those that honestly believe all those lies and became radicalized due to them. This is not a switch that can be turned off with some "unity" kumbaya hog wash. AND I do think in some serious cases it should be mandatory and not voluntary. Just like I would want meds mandatory for somebody that suffers from violent delusions due to any number of mental illnesses where meds can make their lives normal again. Obviously, if their desire to hate is greater than their resolve to work through their issues, then they can either go on watch lists or be locked up IMHO. But there will be a great number of people who can not understand or accept that they were lied to and drug down the path of fascism by Trump and his cohorts. These people will need some kind of help or they will always feel like they are on the outside looking in, in American society. I'd liken them to people who fall for other scams everyday but they don't realize it until it's too late or refuse to believe they were scammed because that truth would destroy mentally them. They need help. And I'd be fine with that help being 100% voluntary on their part as long as they pose no ongoing danger to society.

To have all that we need to rely on more than 25% of voting American’s to have half a brain and some common sense. That just isn’t so. Education is the first step. Fund public schools like never before. Put metropolitan funds into the hands that need them the most and those who can do the most with it.

AOC frustrates me. I certainly don't agree with a lot of her platforms, but I appreciate the ways that she sheds light on corporate welfare and the money ties into campaigns...
