Glad your brought him up. I am pretty high on that guy. I just don't get very involved in mentioning prospects.

I watch SEC football and he was really solid for Kentucky. He was named SEC defensive breakout player of the year. I don't think he made any of the main SEC all SEC teams, but experience was his big knock. He only started this past season, but the kid is good. He is a guy I think of when I talk about trading out of the 1st round, move down a few slots to take him and pick up something for next year. I wouldn't mind if we just took him at 26. He will start right out of the box and only get better. He checks the boxes, both on tape and his metrics. I think he will be a very good NFL player.

With the free agent signing of Johnson at S, does that affect our interest in JOK?
Would we be less interested in drafting a hybrid Lb/S or no affect?

If we truly are drafting BPA, then signing Johnson does not change anything.

I would equate BPA to something like I'm going to buy the fastest car! (I can afford)

It should not.

But it does.

We will not draft a safety in the first round.

Every year I hear teams say BPA.

Then when the draft happens; it sure seems like need rules.

The hope is that BPA intersects with need.

Probably not to any large degree. We are still counting on Delpit to come back strong. There is a degree of risk in that, so it's not like drafting a safety isn't a smart move.

If a safety is the BPA in the 1st round, or the 5th, there is no reason to not take him. It's not like safties don't play on ST for a period of time.

With the D we will probably play and the evolving LB position, a guy like Harrison could slot in to a traditional LB role just fine IMO.

I really think it depends on how closely different positions and players are rated. If a safety is available as BPA but an edge or CB is there with a very similar grade - the positional impact must impact the decision. If the BPA is considered to have a big differential to the next player available - then you take him. Just what I see as logical / real world vs theory when someone says "always take BPA".

Well, Azeez Ojulari apparently weighs 249lbs at only 6'2 2/8 inches. Safe to say he's built well for that height.

Of course he has 34 3/8" arms and an 82 4/8" wingspan, so who cares about height. smile

I knew he had a good long arm rush but dang. I'd take him at 26 now smile

I think we're pretty close in our opinions here. If a player drops in the draft there may be that one player you feel you must take due the BPA being so much higher than your other choices at your pick. Otherwise this is the way I see it.....

By the time you get to #26 you will usually have at least a few players rated very closely together. Let's just say for example the highest rated player on your board at #26 is a WR. But also on your board you have a DT, DE and a CB all rated within a single point of that WR. Do you take that WR even though the value of all these players is within a point and you have a glaring need to upgrade your defense?

I don't think you do. It is my belief that when drafting, a player at a position of need actually holds a higher value than a player at a position where you have no need. It may not be by a huge margin, but you can bet your butt that if a QB is the highest rated player on the board at #26, we won't be using that first round pick on a QB.

Some people seem to feel that QB is the only position on our team where that holds true. (other than kicker or punter) But I can't see any reason why that's true.

I am not sure who says always take BPA with as strict guidelines as you indicate.

I agree, there is almost always going to be some wiggle room.

Just me wondering.

Hypothetically you draft a quarterback in the top ten of a draft. Like we did along with Allen, and Lamar. By the time he begins his sixth year you have to start paying that guy immense money.

From that point on you don't really have money to spread around the roster.

I am beginning to think you have to draft a quarterback every six years. The most you can afford to keep a quarterback is ten years max.

Simply because of the money they eat up. You need to win with them under their first contract. Maybe within his second deal you can still maneuver.

High picks go to bad teams. It may take three years just to challenge for a wild card. Then you have two years of options before extending to big bucks or not.

I am beginning to think it is important to invest in guys who could develop. One as a back-up. Or, the guy could be a future starter.

When RG 3 was drafted by Washington. Everybody freaked out when they drafted Cousins in the third. How did that pan out?

I think it wise to invest in the qb position in the draft when you get the chance.

Rodgers got bent when the Packers drafted Love. Too bad Aaron.

Rodgers sat three years behind Farve.

More dual threat qb's are coming into the game. Running becomes part of their offense. It is different than developing a pocket passer.

We all know the importance of the qb position.

However, economics change things. One player on a roster makes $1m. A quarterback making $40m?

Keeping talent at other positions becomes almost impossible.

Any of you guys Cincinnati Bearcat fans?

I watched a Bearcat game earlier this year (I think it was their bowl game, not sure), and they had a defensive end that really impressed me. He jumped off the screen. I don't remember his name. Elijah Ponder is in the draft but I don't think it was him. Could have been. Any of you guys able to enlighten me?

Myjai Sanders probably. Although Ojulari from Georgia is the edge that kind of stole the show in their Bowl game. Azeez got like half his sacks for the season in it.

Myjai Sanders rings a bell somewhere. I'll have to check out some games.

That does sound great in theory. The problem is far more complicated than that however. First off, your team as a whole would have to be so terrible that you are actually drafting in the top 10. If you have a good QB, you are probably drafting in the 20's, so you don't have anything close to a top 10 pick.

That greatly decreases the odds of replacing your current QB with a QB drafted in that range. Could it happen? Yes, Aaron Rogers and Russel Wilson are prime examples that "it can". But your odds are pretty bad.

Then here's the second problem it poses. Let's look at the Browns as an example. Do you think going into Mayfields sixth year our team won't have needs? If you use that say pick number 22-30 in some attempt to replace Mayfield, it will stop your ability to address a part of the team where you have an actual need.

And once again using our Browns, do you see just how many top picks we used to try and address the QB position over our first 20 years after expansion that were wasted? If finding a franchise was as easy as, "Hey, let's just take one in the top 10 and replace the expensive one", more teams would do that.

Let me pose a question to you. Our defense stunk up the field in 2020, yet we still won so many games that we are drafting at #26. So with Mayfield as our QB, do you think we'll even be drafting in the top 15 or 20 for several years to come? That may very well be the problem with your scenario. We would waste a lot of first round picks trying to find another franchise QB in the 15 to 25 draft pick range.

And if you look around the league, finding a legitimate franchise QB isn't easy no matter where you are drafting.

I know full well that it is complicated.

However, Eli Manning and Matt Stafford were both making just under $21 and eating 16.9 % of the cap space.

Mahomes is now making $45m and Dak is getting $40.
Inflation for sure.

(Until the league adjusted it. The same type thing was happening on rookie deals. 2011 was the last monster rookie deal.)

Unless the percentage remains the same at some point the team is getting strangled.

It becomes really important to find guys outside the first round. Where you can develop them for at least two years.

Now a top ten guy is thrown in there to learn on the fly with a bad team. Many fail.

No easy solution.

It is complicated for many reasons. I don't have an answer.

You must have great evaluators. Then have the patience and discipline to develop them.

Brees retired. Brady is still going. Two of the greatest players to play the game. Both a long way away from a top ten pick.

It does happen. Less likely no doubt.

It reminds me of what I heard Jimmy Johnson tell Belichick while fishing in Florida. "The most important person on every team is the person who evaluates talent."

With the new look of our secondary after signing JJ and Troy Hill, I think that it's an easy bet that Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is now the front runner to be our pick at #26, if he is available.

Auburn Wr Anthony Swartz ran a 4.26 forty - and was disappointed in his time.
He in 6'0 and 186#
He had 54 receptions for 636 yards and 3 TD

That is all I know about him. With that speed, he might be worth a later round flyer

Everyone said Ojulari was 238-240 and he came in at 249 lbs and destroyed his pro day junk.

I'd like JOK o be at least 220 lbs. But 224-ish lbs at 6'1" is the same general girth as 6'3" and about 235 lbs (and no one would whine about that).

Most of the talking heads for sports don't understand what a true "comp" is.
I know I mentioned it before, but there is a rather large difference between 6'1"; 220lbs and 6'4";220lbs.

That said. if he's 6'1" and has T-Rez arms there could be a reach/wrap up concern.

I miss the old-school guys, too, but they only play as the 2nd ILB in a 3-4 these days.

That said, if JOK rolls in at like 212ls to his pro day, he's an ols school strong safety and he goes "down the board."

As a "tweener" he has to show he can carry that weight (a long time).

Boy...you're gonna carry that weight...carry that weight...

Big board with grades and analysis is up now. Oweh is their top edge and I don't like it. I'd better start digging into the others more. Didn't really think Oweh would make it to us before, and he's already their edge 1 before blowing up at his pro day.

I’ve seen this name linked to us a few places ... no doubt we could use that speed

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Later round, like 2nd round in a trade up?

I don't think he lasts too far in to round 2. The guy is fast as blazes no doubt, but he is also a good receiver.

Schwartz isn't like John Ross who could run, but little else.

JOK, as much as I love his hype, is too small as-is to play LB. He's a Safety at that size.

Micah Parsons, Zaven Collins, Nick Bolton, or Jabril Cox will be the pick.

I don't know if he would necessarily be my pick, but of the guys I expect to make it to #26, I'd bet that Jabril Cox ends up as our guy.

This where continuity matters.

It is all about scheme fit. What are the responsibilities of your linebackers in the system you run?

You don't need to weigh a lot to be a good tackler. If the requirement for the scheme is to cover; then you have to have that skill set.

Phillips, Malcolm, Wilson, Taki, none of them are great at coverage. Phillips, and Wilson have some potential.

On third and long we need that player who can cover backs and TE's and still be honest against the run.

If you watch the tape on Koramoah this guy makes plays all over the field. He is fast, instinctive and can hit.

IMO he is the best scheme fit for what the Browns are trying to do on defense.

Unless we do something to address the interior Dline in free agency I think it must have early attention in the draft. Overall its a weak class for DL so to get a decent player it probably has to be early. I'll be concerned if it isn't targeted by our second third round pick. There is not enough depth on the roster to have an effective rotation.

I'm not a big fan of Curtis Weaver on the edge. I'm wondering if he could get above 280 and kick inside to 3T.

I wouldn't be against bringing back Danny Shelton at the right price, either.

Edit: What are your thoughts on Jonathan Marshall from Arkansas? His highlights are intriguing to me.

I don't know much about the kid. Yesterday was the 1st i ever heard of him.

I don't know where he will go but i doubt that i would take a wr in round 2 of this draft. I would consider one in round 3 or 4 and Schwartz would be a guy to consider in that range if available.

Appreciate your insight that he is actually a good receiver.

Oweh
Jonathan Marshall
Trill Williams

That might be my ideal draft start at the moment. Could probably talk me into a different CB.

If Oweh is off the board, I have no idea who I want at 26. Jamin Davis maybe.

Marshall played kind of out of position at 0-tech in a 3-3-5, but seems really disruptive anyways if his highlights and the game against Bama (Lined up over likely high draft pick Landon Dickerson, only through the first half so far watching him and Barmore) are any indication. Seems to play a ton of snaps for a big fella. Thought I even saw him covering punts (chasing D Smith.) Bama definitely seemed to give Barmore more rest.

Now that FA has strengthened our DB's and LB's I think we focus on DT and Edge in the first round. Personally I would go DT first:

Here are the DT's I like for Our 26th Pick if available:

1. Christian Barmore DT Alabama
2. Levi Onwuzurike DT Washington
3. Daviyon Nixon DT Iowa

Here are the DE's I like for Our 26th Pick if available:

1. Gregory Rousseau DE Miami
2. Kwity Paye DE Michigan
3. Jaelan Phillips DE Miami
4. Jayson Oweh DE Penn State
5. Carlos Basham DE Wake Forest

Most of the DT's and DE's I like are legitimately graded as second-round guys or , later.

My #1 DE, Ronnie Perkins, btw he's the same size as Von Miller.
Dayo Odeyingbo, Vandy
Jordan Smith, UAB
Payton Turner, Houston - prototypical size

DL:
Jay Tufele
Tommy Togiai
Barmore
Nixon
Marlon Tuipoluto
Tyler Shelvin
