Getting Clowney now, with what we already have acquired, might be a good move providing it's at the right price. You mentioned Gerard Warren. If you consider where He was drafted, I believe it was 2nd overall, then yes he might be a bust. However he was a pretty good player for a number of years. If he was drafted in the 2nd RD no one would say he was a bust. I hope we look the other way on Clowney ...

I posted the below in the "Random Draft Thoughts" thread. I understand all the discussion about another edge but I trust that the team is looking at the reality of the interior D line also. If you want to win a Super Bowl something has to get done with the interior DL.
Look at the composition of our interior D Line. We need another young standout or at least a promising player there too. Richardson has been the anchor of that unit, I think he's 28. I think this is the final year of his contract. Jackson is what, 31? On a one-year deal. Billings is a journeyman signed to a 1-year contract. Elliot is promising but he needs development.
The Minnesota DL was solid across the front. Woods' DL in Denver and SF ha depth across those fronts too. Can't win with just edge guys. And what we have now does not equate to sustained success.

It keeps rookies that haven't earned a thing cheap while putting more money in the pockets of veterans. It's been this way for about four or five years, now. Really?!?!? Yes, at the end of the previous CBA, collective bargaining agreement, there was a sort of threat of a league shutdown, or kind of a threat of an owners strike, and a chance the year would have been shut down, but the two sides came to an agreement and it ended the rookie first overall draft picks becoming the highest paid players in the league, when they weren't necessarily ever playing a down, like Vernon Gholston DL, jets, or Ryan Leaf, Qb san diego, This was a big switch, it allows for veteran players to make more percentage of the total pay in the NFL, and it put in place the 5th year option on rookie contracts it set the length for rookie contract years. In the past some players might sign a 10 year or otherwise longterm rookie contract and never become a free agent their whole careers. I think, something like, Sam Bradford, Qb was the last or first one to be an unlimited paid rookie #1 overall, or Teddy Bridgewater, maybe it was him.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I've been thinking about this move, and how it relates to our defense. Seems like we now have a lot of 3-tech DTs: Richardson, Jackson, and Elliot.
We lost LO and Taylor, our 1-tech DTs from last year, but we are getting Billings back, who is a 1-tech; but that's it.
From what I remember, Woods likes to run one 1-tech and one 3-tech at DT. Is this move to put more pressure on Richardson to take a pay cut? And will we add another 1-tech in FA?

Honestly, I'm not sure what Woods prefers on the DL. He's always been more of a back 7/secondary/passing game guy. I've been trying to search for how we had the DL aligned last season, but I've had no luck so far. Takk McKinley talked about liking the Wide 9 scheme in his presser. Maybe we plan on going with two "3 techs" (stylistically not necessarily alignment) most of the time?

I think your assessment is accurate. One of the presently signed 3-techs will have to play behind Billings if another player is not brought in. Maybe Jackson is able to play there. I'm not sure. To me, this is not optimal. I would like to add another guy who could man the 1-tech position, either a free agent or a drafted guy. Personally, I would like to get younger on this unit.
Free agents that might fits are, Shelby Harris, Sheldon Rankins, Geno Atkins, Kawann Short, or even...Danny Shelton.
Draft prospects include, Jay Tufele, Tommy Togiai, Marlon Tuipulotu, Tyler Shelvin or Alim McNeil.
