This is the type of thing the NFL Network does to drum up interest when there is nothing else going on. Of course there is mutual interest he visited the team’s facility.

Last off-season was his first time as a free agent and players weren’t allowed to make visits because of COVID.

With so little cap space left, it'll be interesting to see the deal if he signs.

Of course if we renegotiate someone else's deal or cut someone, it could free up enough space to get the deal done.

Assuming these all stay... Higgins has a 2.38M cap hit, and it drops off 780k from the top 51. Walker has a 3.5M cap hit, and it drops off a 826,652 salary from the top 51. Jackson has a 4.5M cap hit and it drops off a 850k salary.

Under a 2nd assumption that all of these salaries are less than 850k, and thus wouldn't show up in the top 51, we have about $6.2M cap space. This includes the space needed for the rookies.

Overthecap and Spotrac are starting to get these contracts on their sites. It looks like we did some of the future voided years deals to spread the cap hit out.

For example, Walker's 1 year deal is actually a 3 year deal with 2 years voided. This means year 1 cap hit is 1.836M and dead cap will be 1.164M next year. That is essentially 1.164M more we can theoretically spend this season.

As of now, both sites show about 12.5M in cap space with a couple guys not accounted for. Nonetheless, instead of the 6.2M estimate, it is likely closer to $10m and we can spend about $5m of that without impacting rookie pool. All estimates, but we can sign others if we want.

By this time through his agent Clowney knows what his market is.

I expect something to happen this week.

Clowney must have given some thought to playing opposite Myles.

That has to be a factor. If he is only getting short term offers. It is because of not staying healthy. Part of that is facing double teams. Which obviously affects his pass rush numbers as well.

If he can have a full healthy year and put up good numbers. He may get the big pay day deal he is looking for.

So the Browns have to be at the very least a good opportunity.

I would like to sign him for a year. Then draft a DE. Or, sign him for two years and go corner.

The market is dictating to Clowney now not the other way around. If he and his agent were smart he would sign with us for whatever we are offering and give his best effort for possibly a big payday in the future. Why should he sign with us? Because with the talent we now have on D, with more to come if I may add, no one will be able to focus on him. Not to mention he'll be playing opposite Myles who is one of the best at his position. He will have a golden opportunity with us and at this point in his career I don't think he can pass it up. JMO

Simply signing with us for whatever we are offering might not be the smart move. Also, he might only want a 1 year deal and we might be looking for longer.

Unless we know what is being offered by us and other teams, we don't know what the smart move might be.

The fact it is known we want to sign him and haven't at this point makes me think we aren't the only players for his services that are making competitive offers.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
