The defense rested late last week and final arguments began this morning. This trial could be in the Jury's hands by the middle of this week-
Which means-is this going to be another trigger point leading to protests and unrests, because I truly think if Chauvin is acquitted, the rebuttal will be quick and furious.

It looks like Minneapolis St. Paul is already gearing up for potential issues.

I did not follow the trial closely, I do not put the tv on during the day when I am working-I only heard bits and pieces of testimony during news breaks on NPR-and almost all of it was prosecution witnesses-but what I did hear-I don't think Chauvin gets acquitted on all counts

If he gets acquitted after watching that video it will be a sure sign that there is no justice.

I think a lot will depends on what he was charged with. I definitely think he was responsible for the death but I don't think it qualifies as 1st degree murder.

I don't know the definitions or differences between the different gradations. What qualifies as 2nd degree murder vs manslaughter etc

What's makes it even more complicated (or simpler?) is that in MN, a felonious assault that leads to death is then murder (meaning, to get a murder conviction you only have to prove a felony-level assault occurred).

First degree murder isn't even a charge he is facing. I won't get into what each charge requires for a guilty verdict as those are easily found in a google search of Minnesota law.

Chauvin faces three charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Second degree manslaughter is the easiest of the charges to prove.

The murder was perpetrated in plain sight. Over a period of 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

DeSantis signs 'anti-riot bill' cracking down on 'public disorder'

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Monday signed a controversial measure, known as the “anti-riot bill,” into law, which is aimed at “combating public disorder.”

The bill, which goes into effect immediately, requires that cities receive approval from the state before cutting their police budgets, and it raises the charge for protesters who destroy historical structures, including flags and memorials, to a felony.

Additionally, the bill grants civil legal immunity to individuals who drive through roads that protesters block off, making blocking a highway a felony offense, and it prohibits protesters who are arrested during a riot from posting bail until after their first court date.

The legislation also increased the charge for battery on a police officer during a riot, upping the consequence to a minimum of six months in jail.

The Florida state Senate approved the legislation mostly along party lines in a 23-17 vote on Thursday. The bill cleared the state House in a 76-39 vote in March.

“If you look at the breadth of this particular piece of legislation, it is the strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement piece of legislation in the country,” DeSantis said at a press conference on Monday. “There’s just nothing even close.”

The Orlando Sentinel and WFLA previously reported on the bill signing.

Last week, the Texas Senate passed a bill that would require cuts to police budgets to be approved by the community through a vote.

The legislation comes as the country prepares for a potential surge in protests following the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering George Floyd after video footage captured him kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.

The prosecution and defense presented closing arguments on Monday.

DeSantis mentioned the trial at the press conference on Monday, criticizing Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison for his handling of the case.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” DeSantis said. “But I can tell you that case was bungled by the attorney general there in Minnesota. They didn’t handle it properly. And so there may be people disappointed.”

DEPLORABLE. Trying to take away first amendment rights of free speech via protest! This is just more Trump 2.0 crap from i-wannabe-potus Desantis to attack what is perceived on the right as lib supported rioting which is BS. I can't stand this guy Desantis and hope like hell the GOP doesn't run him for POTUS. He is a more political, slightly more intelligent Trump wannabe AND that is very dangerous.

EDIT: and this would make a legal penalty for running down protesters in your car non-existent! WTH?

Guilty as hell. And will probably be acquitted of murder. And probably won’t see a day in jail. American justice is served up cold.

If he gets off scot-free, I hope the BLM type protests are 10 times more intense than 2020 and the white supremacists supporting this type of injustice pay a very heavy price.

Nobody wants more violence, but an acquittal IS the approval of police violence continuing against POC. Think about that before condemning those who are demanding justice.

You probably dont have to worry about it. There are black people on the jury and all the jurors would have to agree that there is reasonable doubt for him to be acquitted. Thats not happening.

That is incorrect.

It only takes ONE juror claiming reasonable doubt to hang the jury and have a mistrial declared.

I'm good with your religious beliefs, but don't waste your bible versus on me Pastor. Let's debate in fact and not faith since this topic is life and death for POC.

Have you ever heard of the presumption of innocence? All of the jurors MUST find him guilty for a conviction, not just the 'black people' on the jury. smh

Only if the prosecution thinks they can win in another trial.

If he is acquitted, should people riot as has been advocated by some?

Should calls for riot be called if he is found guilty?

When powerful members of our federal government are calling for his conviction or let the riots ensue, that borders on the taking of political prisoners if he is convicted.

What next, make changes so we can convict jury members if they go against popular opinion?

I only have one question.... Specifically, I would have liked this to be asked of the defense witness that indicated that this was not excessive force.

Would you be willing to submit to being handcuffed and have 140 lbs placed on your neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

I would not. I think there is a reasonable chance that I would die. It is as simple as that. I suspect that most people would also feel the same way.

There are so many things that went wrong. At the end of the day, Floyd was executed by Chauvin on that day.

Sort of hilarious/ironic post coming from you ... I mean, Trump lost by the largest margin in history. Every court in the land ruled on the election and alleged issues - it went up to the Supreme court. Everyone ruled against Trump and his lies. . . And yet you perpetuate and support and/or enable the rhetoric about a stolen election... you support the GOP changing rules to make it harder for one segment of society to vote. ALL BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE RESULT.

In this case, as in all cases, the rule of law should be upheld.

2. Sort of reinforces my point. Read Trumps words and read Maxine's words. Both are wrong. Both are baiting. One was POTUS with Alt Right groups and conspiracy groups hanging on his every word (which he pandered to) - the other is a "meh" politician who not many pay much attention to. . . . . you chose to comment on Maxine while enabling the POTUS and his words.

3. You continue to support / promote / enable talk about a "stolen election" and voter fraud in sufficient numbers to overturn the election .... you support/enable the GOP changing legislation to prevent a problem that every court in the land has rejected the premise of.

Gangster hitmen have been taking care of rouge jury members for decades. POC is clearly guilty of murder. Maxine and everyone else with their eyes open witnessed the murder. No justice no peace!

What's hilarious about the Waters situation is that her words are probably his most effective legal defense at this point. Judge himself said that this could probably be grounds for appeal, if the defense chooses to do so.

Couple of things that I saw yesterday that I just didn't like.

The continued effort by the the Defense to basically say that Floyds death was of his own doing. That's just not true.

Maxine Waters BIG MOUTH.. she really needs to SHUT UP! (just like that Green woman from Georgia)

As for what I think will happen, I believe the Cop will be set free and found not guilty of all charges..

Not what I think is right by any means, but I think that's what will happen.

No kidding - Water's should resign. I don't care how "right" you think your side is, words are important. Her's were inflammatory calling for escalating confrontation... that is not the same as encouraging people to get out in huge numbers to peacefully protest.

I saw that. The judge has a point, too. A not-so-subtle way of telling her to shut up, and he's right, too.

I just wish to touch upon something I've mentioned before.

In our justice system it supposed to the judge who doles out the punishment for criminal offenses. It is up to the police to arrest and detain them.

So let's look at the law as it pertains to resisting arrest in Minnesota.

Quote:
What is resisting.

The Minnesota legislature intentionally wrote the law in very broad terms. Under the law, resisting arrest means:

Refusing to be handcuffed;
Refusing to surrender;
Struggling with the police;
Wrestling or fighting with the police; or
Somehow preventing the police from making an arrest.

Resisting arrest is a gross misdemeanor punishable by no more than one year in prison, a $3,000 fine, or both if the act or threat was forceful or violent but did not cause death, substantial bodily injury, or substantial property damage. Nov 20, 2020

https://arechigo-stokka.com/blog/is-resisting-arrest-a-felony/

Fleeing a police officer carries a maximum sentence of three years in Minnesota.

Resisting arrest is not even a felony. Even a judge, in a court of law is constrained to a one year prison sentence for the crime.

Then why is it that a segment of our society seems to constantly use the tired old line of, "If they had only done what the cop told them", "If only they hadn't run from the cops" to excuse the police from handing out the death penalty for those same offenses?

It appears some people feel the cops have more power to hand out the death penalty than a judge does. There's something very wrong with that.

The jury has reached a verdict but it gas not been announced yet. Coming to a decision this quickly doesn't usually bode well for the defendant.
