Glad nobody was injured. That’s pretty impaired to be driving

This needs to be punished severely. An unfortunate incident but a real opportunity to show that no one's exempt from a zero tolerance policy.

Browns staffer Callie Brownson pleads guilty to operating a vehicle under the influencePosted by Michael David Smith on June 9, 2021, 7:26 AM EDT Browns chief of staff Callie Brownson has pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle under the influence in an agreement that will allow her to avoid jail time. Brownson entered the guilty plea on Tuesday, the same day news broke that she had been arrested on May 27. According to Cleveland.com, Brownson had two other charges dismissed: one for speeding and one for a blood-alcohol level above .17. Brownson paid $780 in court costs and fines, and accrued six points on her drivers license, which has been suspended. She will not go to jail. Brownson was pulled over for driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone at 12:27 a.m. Her blood-alcohol content was .2150, nearly three times the legal limit. The Browns say they “will take the appropriate disciplinary actions.” Brownson could also face league discipline. Brownson coached the Browns’ tight ends in one game last year and their wide receivers in another game after other assistant coaches had to miss the games because of COVID-19. That made her the first woman to serve as a primary position coach in an NFL game. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20...-the-influence/

There are two entities at stake here.
The Browns and the NFL.
Andy Reid's son drinking and driving led to a tragedy.
Thankfully this incident did not.
The NFL will most likely suspend her.
I am uncertain how the Browns will react. I don't know if this warrents a second chance?
In light of the Reid incident maybe not.

I'm curious to see where this goes for a few reasons, all centered around the current social climate and recent initiatives by the NFL.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

There are certainly instances of people having 1 or 2 too many and thinking "I'm good" when the breathalizer says otherwise... but this isn't one of those times. She was hammered drunk and had no excuse even looking at a car.

I am not so sure.
This is a case of gross misjudgement. There is no excuse.
She will be suspended by the NFL. I have no doubt about that.
The Browns will take action as well. Bringing her back after this. That needs to be thought out. She pleaded no contest.
What type of message does this send within the organization?
This could go a number of ways. Who will make this call?

Of course she deserves a 2nd chance. Good gosh. This might be an unnecessary tangent, but my understanding is that the NFL coaching/management ranks is awash in alcoholism. We had a GM that was here and did a good and went to Denver where his death was related to his alcohol abuse (Heckert?). The articles at the time (this was some time ago) made it seem like there were quite a few of these guys working in high-profile jobs in the NFL that were basically ticking time bombs.

She was hammered drunk and had no excuse even looking at a car. Hard to say about hammered. Just speaking outside the legal limits, it sounds like she was a heavy drinker. If a person wasn't, .24 or whatever it was would no doubt have her totally impaired, remember, I am speaking outside the law limits. People who drink heavily don't see as much of an impact, as early. I am not sticking up for her, but some people can drink quite a bit before they become falling down, seeing double drunk. At least that is what I consider hammered.

It's a corporate decision and will most likely be based on "what looks best".
Many men have been given a "second chance" so what would the image be not to give a second chance to a woman? Probably not a good look.
In the age where drinking and driving is being so heavily punished and with the claim of a "zero tolerance policy", how would letting her off the hook look? Probably not good.
The most important thing to the Browns will be which of these two evils will create the least objections and make the corporation look best.
If I were a gambling man my money would be on giving her a second chance. I mean who doesn't love a good redemption story?

I think Kokinis had issues as well on that front, as well as others...
As far as Callie goes, I agree with Peen that she deserves a second chance. She had been - from all accounts that I have seen - making a lot of strides at her job and putting in a lot of work. I don't think this incident in isolation should derail that. She'd be on razor thin ice, though. Might just want to go ahead and quit drinking all together.

There are one of two things going on here... Either she was smashed and totally irresponsible or she is a heavy drinker and thought she was "good to go". Stack on the stupidity of going 20 mph over in a 35 and all you can do is shake your head and wonder. No matter which is true -- huge wake up call. I don't expect a very severe punishment, not sure she deserves that, unless this has been an ongoing problem. Not sure of her past history, at age 31 there either is or is not one, I think that will help dictate proper punishment.

I don't think it is a matter of letting her off the hook. My issue is when people start talking about firing people. That is a bit Draconian for a 1st time considering that is the most a employer could do if a person went out and smashed up a few cars and people were injured. No doubt something is going to happen to her. What do players get...2-3 game suspension for a 1st time? In this case you might not make it games, simply 2-3 weeks suspended without pay. Maybe not that much considering what players make. I think much of their suspension time is measured to make a real impact on their salary. I don't know what she makes, but for most normal people, 3 weeks without pay is probably more than they can handle.

I don't think it's any different than any other profession either. The higher the stress level of any job the higher the likelihood people will self medicate to help relieve that stress. Whether it's alcohol or drug use it's something every profession has to deal with.

Whether you and I see it that way or not, that will be the general perception by some. From a personal standpoint if this is her first substance infraction I don't think she should be fired.
But if she isn't there will certainly be a segment of our society who sees it as her being let off the hook.
But then if you think about it, do we know her history with alcohol? Do we really know her background? All I can say for sure is that this is the first incident I have seen reported since she has been with the Browns. Other than that I have no clue about her.

This not cut and dry.
I could see this going either way.
Most times a second chance is given. However, in light of the Reid's son?
Drinking and driving has been pounded as a social issue for a long time. Everyone knows the score.
Is this was a one off or does she have a history of drinking?
It is sad really. It was a high profile hire. Stefanski praised her. It was a organizational move that the Browns embraced to have have the the youngest black man as a GM. Then to hire a woman into what has been a male dominated role.
So, I am not sure how the Browns will handle this?

I brought up that her history with alcohol will be heavily considered if one exists. But it will be based on the PR aspect, not based in anything else.
We'll see. But I think firing a woman when men have been given a second chance over and over again would be the worst PR move they could make and that's what I'm basing my opinion on.

Seems like Callie just likes to speed and run stop signs, at least around her hometown... No alcohol or substance infractions on record.

Yeah, I didn't bother to look at her record while she played with the DC Divas and (I'm assuming) lived in the DC metro area. She played there for seven years, so there may be something out there.

Lol yeah, honestly that list of offenses (and there are probably more) is a little startling

Perhaps she might want to invest in an apartment across the street in Berea...and also possibly uber to the games on Sunday.

I think she should be suspended for a bit. That BAC is pretty crazy. The only things that (IMO) would be cause for dismissal would be her not holding herself accountable, a history of repeat offenses, or if her job was such that this would affect her credibility or effectiveness in her job (extreme example would be if she were some sort of AA councilor or something like that... I think you get what I'm trying at). I don't think a squeaky clean record is a requirement for Chief of Staff.

I don't really like her trying to use the fact that she is a coach to get off either. She's going to get those pretty yellow and red plates anyway. I hope instead of suspension or other punishment, they send her to rehab for 30 days or more. Sounds like that might be more helpful. And follow that up with a drivers safety course or 10.
I had to help wash blood and brain matter of a road from a friend's kid who was killed drinking and driving once. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. She was a new mother with a child less than 3 months and a young husband left a widower. This is what drinking and driving does. Shame we can't transfer the memories of experiences like that to the young in a way that actually gets through to them.
