We will be able to find Indians gear for a good while. I doubt I will be sporting guardians gear any time soon.

The only way this works is if the name of progressive field is changed to 'the galaxy'
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

I get peoples attachment to the name of the team.
Hell, I was raised by a father who was from the golden era of Lou Boudreau, Feller etc. Both my father and mother were huge Indians fans.
There are similar stories from the "Redskins" of Washington.
However, has the now Washington Football Team diminished the brand or the team?
How about the Washington Bullets?
So now we have the Cleveland Guardians. If they become a real good team. If they were to win a World Series would all this matter?
Hell there was once the Cleveland Rams. Does anybody care about that?

Probably forever. After all this time they only teach you half of our history now.

According to a person that can't be named here! I used to do business with a man named Bob Roshe. He's an Oglala man and Native rights activist. For years, every opening day he would be in front of Progressive field protesting and arguing with the guy who showed up with face-paint and a feathered head-dress. Privately, he told me that the argument was theater, the guy in costume a good friend. He said he hopes the Indians never changed their name and logo, because once a year it gave him a platform to talk about the REAL issues facing Native Americans. (Hint, it wasn't the name of a sports team or their cartoon mascot.)

Of course not. But I'd guess he is more in tune with the general sentiment of his people than you or I.

But didn't you say it was something between he and a friend? I don't see that as a comment that equals "the general sentiment of his people".

I said the theater was between him and his friend. Again, my guess here, but the sentiment he expressed privately is probably representative of the broader Native sentiment. His point is that the real problems facing the Native population are much more grave and important than whether the baseball team in Cleveland is called the Indians.
edited to add: If Chief Wahoo gives him an annual platform to talk about the real problems, his audience is bigger.

I don't disagree that there are much bigger problems. But a good way to bring focus to other issues is to bring attention in a way people notice. It seems without this stage for your friend to speak, he wouldn't have gotten the attention he needed to spread his message.
But to try and give you an example of what I mean....
Ask almost any political question or question of importance to both myself and fish. You will get two totally different answers. Once that happens, tell me which one of us represents the general sentiment of our people.
That's the thing. Even between differing tribes you will get differing answers. You will get differing answers within the same tribe.
I don't think you'll find anyone on this board who would stand up more for what has happened to Native Americans. I do have some native blood which happens to be Cherokee. I would say that I understand more than most the atrocities that happened to Native Americans and many of the very conditions that still exist today.
As such, I have to say that just because there are certainly bigger issues that they can't seem to get changed, that's no excuse to dismiss or try not to change the issues you can change.
One step at a time....

A decision was made.
IMO you could poll this question all over the country and have nothing definitive.
You could go to every existing tribe that has a council and ask them to poll the members. There is no guarantee a consensus would be reached.
They made the change.
The history of the Tribe will not go away.
Now The Guardians has to make their own history.

I doubt he spoke for all of them

I does matter. The name sucks, the logo sucks. I don't care about the Rams because they moved before I was born. I don't care about Washington DC because the city sucks. I don't care what they do or what they want to call their teams. The Guardians of Transportation...wonderful....not

When the Browns were stolen from us, I was devastated like everyone else. We knew from almost the start that there would be a new team in CLE. It was a huge bonus that the City of Cleveland was allowed to retain the team name, colors and history.
That said, I'd already made up my mind to follow whatever CLE NFL team came in, despite the name, colors or mascot. I was going to embrace the new expansion team, buy new gear, and be grateful to be at the start of something that would outlast me. I would have supported the Cuyahoga Crapheap Blowflies, if that was the new incarnation. CLE is where I was born. CLE football is what I love. I ride for life. You don't see me rooting for the Baltimore Ex-Browns, do you?
If I can root for a CLE football team not named the Browns, others should be able to root for a CLE team that changed its name... but remained intact in every other way.
Not a strong baseball fan. Never cared about the name. The mascot creeped me out from childhood. World Series wins will salve the sting of losing a cartoonish stereotype in daily imagery.
(for the record, I think the Notre Dame "Dukes-up Leprechaun" is stupid af, too)
I'm not mourning or celebrating this moment. I understand that all things change in the fullness of time.
That's why I'm not going out as that angry old man in the corner house, pissed-off that things aren't still like they were in the 70's- when he was part of the group making changes.
Guardians are fine with me. Whatever.

You are not a Native American?
If you were maybe just maybe you might feel differently.
And you don't own the team? So, if it bothers you.
You have a choice. Be a fan or not. Or, just bitch about it.

For some it seems symbolism means more than the actual team itself. I guess it's all about priorities. But we see a lot of this these days.

I think the logo sucks and the name sucks. If I didn't care about Cleveland or the team, I wouldn't have said anything.

Like you, I'll still follow the team. I don't even hate the name that much, but I can't say I like it either. Guardians of traffic? What is that, like St Christopher for non-Catholics? Whatever, they'll always be the Indians to me. On the bright side, we can still call them the Featherheads.

Actually, I am. My cousin and I are the last in our bloodline that can claim Native. She joined a Blackfoot Tribe I didn't care, so quit talking like all do.

I have you on ignore, and do ignore you in the political form, but I still pull you up in here because now and then you have something legit to say, and we have been friends on here for maybe 22 years. I don't understand what is so funny? If you are going to carry over in to here the way you are in other forums, I'll just forget it and not pull you up anywhere.

I'm not involved in the politics of the change. If it needed to be changed fine. I'm not sure about Guardians though. I wonder if they considered the name Spiders from the 1899 Cleveland team. That might have been better.

I don't care what you do. I mean that seems to be the running theme anymore though. Ignore everything you disagree with. So I'm not surprised.
You see, I can also "claim" to be Cherokee due to my blood. But let's be honest here, that would be very disingenuous on both of our parts. Our life and who raised us knows nothing of the struggles of Native Americans first hand. Our direct families know nothing about life on a reservation.
It would have been just as funny had I of said, I can claim to be Cherokee.

That might have been better. That was explained in the article...or maybe a article. Basically it came down to trademarks, and Spiders is the name of a college football team in Va. Trying to weave through the trademark web, pun intended, is tedious and expensive. There are a lot of names out there that have trademark complications. Guardians wasn't one of them.

It would have been just as funny had I of said, I can claim to be Cherokee. Trust me, it isn't because I disagree, even if I do. I didn't claim anything. I even said it wasn't a big deal to me. Anyway, thanks for the words v a icon symbol.
