I guess we can go round and round...I just don't see how you would stand much of a chance on any sort of majority to get the votes needed. I also think it would open more opportunities for lobbyists to work their "magic".
Maybe its time to reform how much influence lobbyists have on our system of government.. Let's face it, they lobby for whats good for themselves and then they package it like it's good for all of America.. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that's not even close to possible.
Maybe it's time to OUTLAW lobbyists altogether.
I would never refer to Lobbyists and working Magic.. They twist and turn the truth to meet their needs..
The GUN LOBBY is about as bad as it gets.
The fact I put the word "magic" in quotes should have tipped you off to my meaning when using the word. You characterize it as twisting and turning while I would call it selling their position. Of course they are working for a position. They are hired to do that. If you are hired to sell Hoover vacuum cleaners, you aren't going to try to sell Electrolux.
I don't think banning them would do any good. Probably do more harm than good. At least they have to be registered, so we know they are out there. Otherwise it would be 100% under the table. You highlight the gun lobby because you don't like them, which is your right and opinion. Other people might not like lobbyist's for cancer research. The point is there is a lobby for all sorts of organizations that seek favor in Congress. Simply saying they are banned wouldn't work. People and groups are always going to seek favor with Congress. All can be good and bad. It just depends on if a person likes or dislikes the things they are pushing. That's what my half of a brain tells me.
I am sure if you and I sat down over a iced tea, we would probably agree on about 1/3 of the lobby groups, disagree on 1/3, and not give a crap either way about the other 1/3rd. Any discord is over the 1/3 where we might have different opinions, forgetting we basically agree on 2/3rds of the topic.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
History has taught us that being stuck in a draconian way of thinking over a long period of time without opening up your mind to change is not only destructive, but leaves you behind the rest of society as they move on from that line of thinking.
I think it's time for term limits in congress..... having senators and house members in service for 30+ years doesn't feel helpful... I personally also think we need an age limit for president and congress....

Yup,, Nope, I don't like lobby groups at all. But mostly because I don't like the way they buy politicians. From the Green lobby to the gun lobby...They buy those votes..
That's why I think the entire system needs reformed

way past time to have term limits for congress... If you haven't made meaningful change in 30-40 years why are you still there...
age limits I'm not as strong on... but still feel slightly uncomfortable with people in their late 70s-80s leading our country... Not saying they can't be competent but it feels like that'd be a lot of stress on someone in their 80s.
If we had term limits, more than two parties and made lobbying a criminal offense, we would be well on our way to a government that actually works for the people rather than big business and special interests.

I feel the same even if it's ageist. I don't think anyone over 70, maybe even like 65 or 62 like anyone that can draw social security should be to old for active office. I think Pelosi has handled herself better than most of the older people in congress, but she often appears befuddled and lost. Then you have people like Diane Feinstein who is repeatedly showing signs of dementia. Honestly, I think Biden is a borderline case of dementia/too old as well. Bernie is older yet shows none of the signs that Biden shows. Even Trump didn't show too many signs of being too old, too stupid yes, too fascists yes, too divisive yes, too crazy yes, too traitorous yes... lot's of reasons he shouldn't be POTUS but not dementia. And age limiting laws would have prevented him from becoming POTUS.
I think upper limit age restrictions are just as important as lower limit age restrictions. I don't want grandpa crapping his depends while running the country anymore than I want a toddler crapping his diaper while running it. I think we want people closer to their prime (thinking prime, not physically fit prime) making decisions.
EDIT TTIMED OUT, THIS IS THE EDITED POST FROM ABOVE:

Been watching a new series this year called "The Republic of Sarah" and recently binged "the Handmaid's tale" all 4 seasons because I couldn't bear to watch it with a fascist in the Oval. The reason I bring it up is that both shows are about becoming new countries based on political philosophies. The former is about a more dem progressive view on starting a country from scratch to prevent unbridled capitalism from ruining a small town. The latter a more dystopian religious cult-like right-wing society based on preserving/enforcing a right-wing Christian fundamentalists way of life in a world with almost nonexistent birthrates due to some infertility disease.
The reason I bring these two shows up is that they both show the struggles of real people (show characters) under conflicting political control trying to navigate their way through the sheer craziness of political divides while forming new governments. So when I see GOPers trying to make changes I don't like, this is how I feel too... and I can imagine they feel the same about the left's political philosophies. Craziness. Yet somehow, we have made it work for over two hundred years. But the system we have definitely needs some tweaks and the current state of our politics on BOTH sides has proven that. Common sense limits like age restrictions should be something both sides could agree to.

One of the reasons they can't make meaningful progress is that the Lobby industry wants what they want and they buy congress off..
I'm convinced that the thing that really needs done is to keep out elected officials from every receiving anything from lobbyists. In fact, I'd make it a crime.
In return, I'd agree to pay congress more... I'd also limit time off/vacation time. I'd also want to see a very strong morals clause.. It's like this Gaitz thing where he's being accused of misdeeds.. If found guilty, he's gotta leave office.
I'd also want background checks that can't be gotten around.. These people are given access to a lot of secrets.. I'd like to make sure they are cleared to have this information.
Man I'd change things up a bunch...

So you think people in the FBI and the CIA have to pass background checks for national safety, but the people they hand all of that information over to shouldn't have to?

I don't know anymore. I haven't applied for a job in over 30 years and haven't bought a gun in maybe 10 years.
I did get my airport Pre-Check approved a few years ago. I don't have to take off my shoes anymore and get through the lines pretty much hassle free. In some airports I even have a special line I can access.
My passport is about due to be renewed. I guess I'll find out if I have been added to some newly created or expanded list.

What Trump policies were so bad that they needed to be stopped?
The only thing he did right was “operation warp speed”. Then many of his loyal subjects refused to get vacced and masked up saying their freedoms are being taken away. Or they’re injecting electronic chips in your body. Pffft trump policies lol. Even his own people didn’t follow his policies.

Well, have you committed any crimes for which you were found guilty... Excessive traffic violations. Any credit issues.. How about anything that you think would be so embarrasing that you could be blackmailed for?
If the answer is no, probably you would pass.
But you and I aren't the problem. Neither of us are running for office or up for an appointment to some high level spot. Not sure why you even asked me that other than a feeble attempt at a gotcha!
What's important is that those that receive sensitive info are in a position to have it and not be compromised.
Remember how much trouble Trumps son in Law had getting cleared.. in fact he wasn't cleared until Trump used his power to get it done.
I question if he was actually worthy of that information.
Let's look at Bill Clinton. The man had a history of running around on his wife.. why is that a problem you might ask? well, if you do things that make you someone that can be blackmailed, thats a problem..
Should he have gotten cleared? I question whether or not he should have. Certainly not my call.
The point is simply, if you can't be trusted with the nations secrets, how in the hell can you do your job as an elected official?

IMO, there are some more besides just Warp Speed. However, Warp Speed might not even be the best example. You'd think Trump would be trumpeting that as a major success of his Presidency (it was) but instead he keeps quiet on his own vaccination and of those around him and allows his minions to continue their anti-vax nonsense. His lack of leadership is effectively knee-capping his most clutch accomplishment attributable to his admin.

You're probably good as long as google/facebook/twitter hasn't flagged you for review for domestic terrorism being a Trump guy and all...

You TDS sufferers are all the same. You didn't like him because he was a meanie. You simply can't name a bad policy...just like those who beat the drum of racism. You can say the word, but have no evidence of it other than your feelings.
Joe's own HHS is caught on a hot mic stating that the current border policy isn't sustainable...Joe is asking OPEC to ramp up oil production...Joe has decided that the Constitution is like a Pirate's Code in a Johnny Depp movie...and America is leaving Afghanistan like the Iraqi soldiers when we kicked their butts. Amazingly all in a long, long 7-8 months.
Where is the VP in all this?
What a disaster. But at least Joe doesn't tweet...or hold a press conference...or ask questions...it's alarmingly better that way.
I know you guys love to parrot this. He still controls the republican party and it would be so nice if you could use that BS to get us to stop talking about it.

What exactly is your point?
Did you want to stay in Afghanistan for longer? 20 years. $2 Trillion 6000+ American dead. Not enough for you? You wanted to stay longer? Pffft. Hypocrite Cult of Trump troll. I should know better.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
And that's the point. Both parties, both Trump and Biden had a firm timeline for removing our troops. Trump's was actually even sooner. But you either agree with both of them or you agree with neither of them. Suddenly those who agreed with Trump to end the war are seeing it differently now that Biden actually agreed with Trump and lived up to the very agreement Trump made.
They sound like McConnell talking to Trump.

Since you've been humping Trump for the past four years I sort of consider you an expert on the topic. You know, the scum bag you say you can promote because your beliefs and values have no reason to be represented by the people you support.

There is nothing in your statement that is true. Tilt. Try again.
Your made up reality is disgusting. And, shows who you are. Oh, you won't run me off. You can lie your ass off about me, but others know better.
I'm glad I was able to furnish you with the inspiration and determination to stick around this time rather than to tuck your tail between your legs and run off like you had done so many times in the past.
You're welcome.

That is why I said I don't know anymore.
Not just pointing at you or claiming such, but I don't know if you are a government plant, flagging people on this board.
These days, you just never know, and that isn't a commentary on just this President or administration.

Yes, I am. I can fly/travel. I can do whatever I want really. But I can't post on Parler, I'm not welcome at kkk, Nazi, or red commie meetings. Oh, and I have to be closely watched when in or near a walmart because I despise stupid people.
