Here's what I don't understand. This morning, on the radio, I heard the CDC is recommending a booster shot 8 months after having had the 2nd shot of moderna or fizer(phizer).
This afternoon, I see the WHO, and the surgeon general of the u.s. are saying it's not needed.
It's frustrating, really.
And, no mention of the J+J vaccine.
Makes you really wonder just how effective the vaccines were considering a booster is needed this soon. Not a good sign. First thought I had, if I get the booster when's the next one. I may NOT be getting that one.
Two things to remember.. 1. science isn't truth.. science is the search for truth..
2. The immunocompremised are the ones that they are recommending the booster for.

2. The immunocompremised are the ones that they are recommending the booster for.
A booster is going to be recommended for all at some point. I believe one of the vaccines has longer immunity than the others - but I believe the Pfizer is one that they will be talking about a booster for everyone soon enough.
Some anti-vaxxers are going to claim that's all part of the big plan to get you hooked. Some are going to say it's proof that it doesn't work. Some are still going to claim that 8 Billion doses worldwide isn't enough to prove it's safe. The best will go on.

Watched this documentary last night (HBO). Very eye opening in many respects. On one hand, you have a Communist government controlling their citizens through the media. On the other hand you have a democracy... controlling it's citizens through the media.
Does a great job of charting the beginning, early cases and China's cover-up. Hospitals were so scared of getting involved (as several were "punished" early on) that they refused to even treat people with symptoms.

'In the Same Breath' digs into the Covid outbreak in China and the US Brian Lowry byline Review by Brian Lowry, CNN
Updated 10:04 AM ET, Wed August 18, 2021
(CNN)Deeply personal, complex and timely, "In the Same Breath" charts the initial outbreak of novel coronavirus in Wuhan, while paralleling the Chinese reaction to the outbreak with the US. Chinese-born filmmaker Nanfu [censored] has created an unsettling window into the early days of the crisis and food for thought about how government, under each system, responded.
[censored] (who directed the 2019 Netflix documentary "One Child Nation") was actually in China celebrating the New Year in January 2020, returning to the US, where she currently resides, as reports of the virus' impact emerged. Working with local journalists and videographers, she has compiled a striking collection of footage -- including some surreptitiously shot inside hospitals -- reflecting the chaotic response and uncertainty, the terrible toll on residents and the government's efforts to spin and obscure what was happening in self-serving, propagandistic ways. It's a devastating portrait of the Chinese government -- and the happy-talk news pushed out through its media -- reinforcing that there has yet to be a full accounting of the true death toll Covid exacted during that first wave of cases. The government's determination to control the narrative includes police visiting those who dared speak out about local conditions, and the grief experienced by families who lost loved ones. Fears of a knock on the door are evident in conversations with hospital personnel, some of whom speak through the anonymity of heavy protective gear. Even in those instances it's hard not to wonder how identifiable some might be, given references to what they witnessed and experienced.
Dr. Fauci weighs in on if US should collaborate with Wuhan labs in future 03:13 Yet while that material makes up the majority of the documentary, [censored] doesn't spare officials in the US during the Trump administration. Indeed, the not-so-subtle message of "In the Same Breath" contrasts the authoritarian response in China with misinformation distributed in the US, waving red flags about where America could be heading. As [censored] puts it in her narration, under both systems there's danger when "ordinary people become casualties of their leaders' pursuit of power." The fact that the film is premiering as the US experiences another alarming wave of Covid-related cases only adds to the project's relevance, while revisiting China's lack of transparency in addressing the issues. In perhaps the most jarring flourish, [censored] engages in a haunting interlude that speculates about how the initial response could have unfolded differently. [censored]'s perspective doesn't spare either nation, which gives a deeper meaning to the title. In some respects, "In the Same Breath" leaves behind as many questions as it answers, but the director's lens and those of her collaborators remain as unflinching as they are sobering. "In the Same Breath" premieres Aug. 18 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, which, like CNN, is a unit of WarnerMedia.
Good. Won't be long before those anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers are not welcome anywhere. Maybe when their own communities start treating them like lepers, maybe then they will get the message.
Your feelings and opinions do not add up to facts.

'Stop it': FDA warns people not to take veterinary drugs to treat Covid-19
Nicole Acevedo Sat, August 21, 2021, 2:46 PM
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is urging people to stop taking veterinary drugs to treat or prevent Covid-19 after receiving multiple reports of patients who have been hospitalized after "self-medicating with ivermectin intended for horses," according to the federal agency.
"You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y'all. Stop it," the FDA tweeted from its official account on Saturday, alongside a consumer update detailing why the drug can be unsafe for humans.
Ivermectin, which is not an anti-viral drug, is generally used to treat or prevent parasites in animals.
"These animal drugs are often highly concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which can weigh a lot more than" a human, the FDA update reads. "Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans."
Patients who overdose with ivermectin can experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, allergic reactions, dizziness, problems with balance, seizures, coma and even death, according to the FDA.
The agency clarified that the FDA-approved ivermectin tablets meant to treat people with certain conditions caused by parasitic worms as well as topical formulations used for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea are different from the drug used on animals. Ivermectin tablets and topical formulations for humans have "very specific doses" that are significantly smaller than the doses meant for animals.
Moreover, "many inactive ingredients found in animal products aren’t evaluated for use in people," FDA warned. In some cases, we don’t know how those inactive ingredients will affect how ivermectin is absorbed in the human body."
The FDA stressed that no form of the ivermectin drug has been approved by the agency for use in treating or preventing Covid-19 in humans.
"However, some initial research is underway," the agency said, adding that "taking a drug for an unapproved use can be very dangerous. This is true of ivermectin, too."
The agency said it was forced to issue a warning in the consumption of ivermectin following "a lot of misinformation" around the drug.
"You may have heard that it’s okay to take large doses of ivermectin. That is wrong," the FDA consumer update reads. "Meanwhile, effective ways to limit the spread of Covid-19 continue to be to wear your mask, stay at least 6 feet from others who don’t live with you, wash hands frequently, and avoid crowds."
The FDA has also granted emergency use authorizations for three Covid-19 vaccines to prevent Covid-19 infections.
Covid-19 has claimed the lives of more than 630,000 people in the U.S. since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. Since then, more than 37.6 million cases of Covid-19 infections have been reported nationwide, according to NBC News' tally.

Poison control calls spike as people take livestock dewormer to treat COVID-19
JACKSON, Miss. (WMC) - The Mississippi State Department of Health sent a health alert Friday warning health care providers about a drug used to deworm livestock that some are using to treat and prevent COVID-19.
According to the alert, the Mississippi Poison Control Center has received several calls related to the ingestion of ivermectin meant for livestock, which is causing illness in COVID-19 patients.
Ivermectin is approved for use in both people and animals, but animal drugs are highly concentrated and can be highly toxic in humans.
According to the health alert:
No one has been hospitalized due to ingestion of the drug.
At least 70% of the recent calls have been related to ingestion of livestock or animal formulations of ivermectin purchased at livestock supply centers.
85% of the callers had mild symptoms.
Mississippi Poison Control Center advises any physicians, providers or hospitals within the state who know patients with illness related to the medication, either prescribed or livestock formulations, to call them at 1-800-222-1222.
An Alabama man who called himself the 'vaccine police' told pharmacists at a Missouri Walmart that they will be 'executed' if they continued giving COVID-19 shots

A man who calls himself the "vaccine police" stormed into a Missouri Walmart on Mondy to put staff on notice," the Springfield News-Leader first reported.
Christopher Key told pharmacists in the store that they would be "executed" if they keep giving COVID vaccine shots.
Key is reportedly an anti-vaxxer from Alabama.

A man, who calls himself the "vaccine police," entered a Walmart in Springfield, Missouri to put staff "on public notice," telling pharmacists they could be "executed" if they carry out COVID-19 vaccine shots, according to reports.
The man identified as Christopher Key, an anti-vaxxer from Alabama, live-streamed the confrontation on Facebook last week, on August 16, according to the Springfield News-Leader.
The video shows Key and a handful of supporters praying in the parking lot of the supercenter before entering. During the prayer, a person could be heard saying: "Thank you, Lord Jesus, for waking up Springfield" and "help us put the fear of God in these pharmacists."
"Okay, guys, this is the vaccine police. We're outside of Walmart about to go in. We're going to put Walmart and the pharmacists on notice to let them know that there in violation of the Nuremberg Code," Key said in the 30-minute live stream.
He continued: "We're going to let them know that 45,000 people within three days of receiving the vaccine dropped dead. And if they give one more vaccine after today, after being put on notice, then they can be hung up, and they can be executed."
In the video, as the group walks towards the pharmacy, staff members are seen locking up and placing a "No Pharmacist on Duty" sign on the door. A local resident told the News-Leader that they had warned the staff ahead of Key's arrival after seeing his plan online to show up.
"I'm not trying to give you any fear and intimidation," Key told a staff member in the video. "I'm just letting you guys know that if you continue to do this, that you guys will be held accountable."
Key spewed multiple baseless claims in the video, stating that more than 40,000 people died in three days after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Towards the end of the video, the group walks out of the store, and Key told a police officer outside that the pharmacists shut the door "when all I wanted to do was get the vaccine," ranting that it's "discrimination."
The Washington Post reported that Key also went to a CVS and Walgreens that same day. According to the Post, he has made false medical claims in the past.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the vaccine is an effective tool to help combat COVID-19. The CDC said those who are fully vaccinated may experience a "breakthrough case." Still, a small percentage will be hospitalized, die, or suffer illness due to the virus.
Missouri has experienced a heavy surge of COVID-19 throughout the summer as the Delta variant spread throughout the country. Local news reported that hospitals in the state have seen over 600 patients in ICUs since July 30. Data shows that only 43% of the population in Missouri are fully vaccinated as of Friday.
As the Washington Post reported last month, the city of Springfield has been battling with COVID-19 amid low vaccination rates and vaccine misinformation.

The Vaccinated Are Worried and Scientists Don’t Have Answers Kristen V. Brown and Rebecca Torrence 21 hrs ago
(Bloomberg) --
Anecdotes tell us what the data can’t: Vaccinated people appear to be getting the coronavirus at a surprisingly high rate. But exactly how often isn’t clear, nor is it certain how likely they are to spread the virus to others.
Though it is evident vaccination still provides powerful protection against the virus, there’s growing concern that vaccinated people may be more vulnerable to serious illness than previously thought.
There’s a dearth of scientific studies with concrete answers, leaving public policy makers and corporate executives to formulate plans based on fragmented information. While some are renewing mask mandates or delaying office reopenings, others cite the lack of clarity to justify staying the course. It can all feel like a mess.
“We have to be humble about what we do know and what we don’t know,” said Tom Frieden, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the head of the nonprofit Resolve to Save Lives. “There are a few things we can say definitively. One is that this is a hard question to address.”
Absent clear public health messaging, vaccinated people are left confused about how to protect themselves. Just how vulnerable they are is a key variable not just for public health officials trying to figure out, say, when booster shots might be needed, but also to inform decisions about whether to roll back reopenings amid a new wave of the virus. On a smaller scale, the unknowns have left music lovers unsure if it’s OK to see a concert and prompted a fresh round of hang-wringing among parents pondering what school is going to look like.
In lieu of answers, what has emerged is a host of case studies providing somewhat different pictures of breakthrough infections. Variables including when the surveys were conducted, whether the delta variant was present, how much of the population was vaccinated and even what the weather was like at the time make it hard to compare results and suss out patterns. It’s difficult to know which data might ultimately carry more heft.
“It’s quite clear that we have more breakthroughs now,” said Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco. “We all know someone who has had one. But we don’t have great clinical data.”
One of the best known outbreaks among vaccinated people occurred in the small beach town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, as thousands of vaccinated and unvaccinated alike gathered on dance floors and at house parties over the Fourth of July weekend to celebrate the holiday -- and what seemed like a turning point in the pandemic. About three-fourths of the 469 infections were among vaccinated people.
Authors of a CDC case study said this might mean that they were just as likely to transmit Covid-19 as the unvaccinated. Even so, they cautioned, as more people are vaccinated, it’s natural that they would also account for a larger share of Covid-19 infections and this one study was not sufficient to draw any conclusions. The incident prompted the CDC to reverse a recommendation it had issued just a few weeks earlier and once again urge the vaccinated to mask up in certain settings.

The problem the US has is the '100 million people' who wont get vaccinated: Dr Fauci Still, the particular details of that cluster of cases may have made that outbreak especially bad, according to Gandhi.
“The rate of mild symptomatic outbreaks in this population was higher because of a lot of indoor activity (including intimacy), rain that weekend, not much outside time and mixture of people with different vaccination status,” she said in an email.
A newly released, far larger CDC case study of infections in New York state, meanwhile, found that the number of breakthrough infections has steadily ticked up since May, accounting for almost 4% of cases by mid-July. Those researchers cautioned that factors such as easing public health restrictions and the rise of the highly contagious delta variant might impact the results.
Yet another CDC case study, in Colorado, found that the breakthrough infection rate in one county, Mesa, was significantly higher than the rest of the state, at 7% versus about 5%. The report suggested it was perhaps because the delta variant was circulating more widely there, but also noted the ages of patients in Mesa and the lower vaccination rate may have played a role.
Research out of Israel seems to back the idea that protection from severe disease wanes in the months after inoculation, and more recently, that breakthrough cases may eventually lead to an uptick in hospitalizations. The information is preliminary and severe breakthrough cases are still rare, but it bolsters the case that some people will need booster shots in coming months.
Case studies and data from some states in the U.S. have similarly shown an increase in breakthrough cases over time. But with the delta variant also on the rise, it’s difficult to tell whether waning immunity to any type of coronavirus infection is to blame, or if the vaccinations are particularly ineffective against the delta variant. It could be both, of course. Changing behavior among vaccinated people could be a factor, too, as they return to social gatherings and travel and dining indoors.
All that said, some facts are well established at this point. Vaccinated people infected with the virus are much less likely to need to go to the hospital, much less likely to need intubation and much less likely to die from the illness. There’s no doubt that vaccines provide significant protection. But a large proportion of the nation -- almost 30% of U.S. adults -- have not been vaccinated, a fact that has conspired with the highly contagious delta variant to push the country into a new wave of outbreaks.
“The big picture here is that the vaccines are working and the reason for the spike in the U.S. is we have too little vaccine uptake,” Frieden said.
To a certain extent, breakthrough cases of any virus are expected. In clinical trials, no Covid vaccine was 100% effective -- even the best vaccines never are. The more the virus is in circulation, the greater the risk of breakthrough cases. It’s also common for some aspects of viral immunity to naturally wane over time.
For the time being, there are simply more questions than answers. Are breakthrough infections ticking up because of the delta variant, waning immunity or a return to normal life? Are vaccinated people more vulnerable to severe illness than previously thought? Just how common are breakthrough infections? It’s anyone’s guess.
“It is generally the case that we have to make public health decisions based on imperfect data,” Frieden said. “But there is just a lot we don’t know.”
(Updates second paragraph to emphasize that vaccines offer strong protection)

It's my honest and sincere hope that this is what a significant portion of the unvaccinated needed in order to make their first appointment.

Many, yes. But how many is what I'm really curious about. It's my belief that the silent majority were honestly hesitant but were lumped in with the vocal minority. I'm guessing we'll find out over the next weeks/months.

here is a good question... why are they approving something that is 5/50 effective
Two doses of mRNA vaccines were 74.7% effective against infection among nursing home residents early in the vaccination program (March–May 2021). During June–July 2021, when B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant circulation predominated, effectiveness declined significantly to 53.1%. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7034e3.htm

If it ONLY increases your odds of living, or not being hospitalized at a huge expense, by 50% you think that’s not worth it? They’re also encouraging a booster shot to improve those odds.
Dude you need to follow me around at work one day. You’d get a first hand taste of the reality you’re denying.
Depends on what you mean by effective. There are a couple ways to measure.
If by simple infection rate (did you test positive or not before/after the shot(s), then I can sorta understand the argument. As we see, there's more to it than that, though. Hospitalization rate is another indicator. Sure, you got the 'rona, but did you get it bad enough to go to the hospital? Not even going to get into how serious it gets from there as having to be hospitalized is bad enough. Lastly, did you die from it?
We've seen the vaccine positively affect each and every of these indicators, but the biggest improvements happen in the latter 2, which are the more important ones.

I would say ask these anti vaxers about covid, but since they are all dead they can't answer you. I bet their families however would tell you to get your ass vaccinated.

Of the 606,000 people who have died from covid, 479k were over 65.
10,086 were under the age of 40.
Do I believe the vaccine works? Not sure. there is alot of conflicting data form doctors and organizations like the CDC. I do know if you are under 40, your survival odds are crazy good.
I also thought Prilosec, Singulair, Talcom powder, Zantec, PPI's, Belviq, Elmiron, Valsartan, Xeljanz, and Zantac worked. Turns out, we find out later that the drug company and FDA was wrong as well as tons of issues causing death, mutations/cancer, etc etc.

That measure is infection, but it's also of patients in nursing homes. My unprofessional interpretation is that a highly contagious variant can still spread in the most highly susceptible groups that are around each other and mingling a lot, regardless of vaccination status.
