Our number one issue keeping the Browns from making the Superbowl is quality depth.
Depth prevents you from overusing your starters. Depth is needed to pick up the slack when injuries do occur. Depth is the backbone of special teams.
A football season is a war of attrition. Very few teams can finish the season with all their prize starters. Teams combat that by trading for replacements. Teams can get lucky and not lose many.
In theory, having the best 2nd and 3rd options trumps all others' secondary options. Having sufficient options allow you sustainability. You need the right players to execute your designed schemes. Otherwise, you're downsizing your playbook to fit the talent.
Bugs,
I agree with you about your meaning of depth. But as with our team, I don't agree with depth was a problem this past season. I believe we just had a stupid amount of injuries this year. The response would be: no crap, that's the point of depth.....but look at the preseason depth chart below
Backups:
QB - Keenum
RB - Hunt / Johnson
WR - Hodge (released) Higgans, Schwartz * this was a weak area*
TE - Njoku, Bryant, Carlson
OL - Hubbard, Harris, Hance, Dunn
DE - Tak, Gustin, Weaver was a hopeful
DT - We hoped Billings would be worth a damn....backups- Day, Square...hoping Elliott and someone else would emerge
LBs - Smith, Phillips, JOK/Wilson
CB - as 4th CB; Greedy, with hope of AJ Green or Stewart
S - Delpit, Redwine
On paper, that's not a bad backup group (meanwhile someone in the back yells: YES, but paper doesn't mean crap that's why we play the games!). I get it. But look at those back ups, we lost a main cog (or more) from each group.
We lose Chubb, well ok, we have Hunt....yes, but Hunt is now out....ok...Johnson, by now we are plucking Kelly off the PS.
Or Offensive line. Willis hurts his ankle first game and we bring in Hubbard our solid swing tackle...btw, he's now out for the year. Then Conklin goes out.
We know what happened with the receivers.
Injuries are a part of the game. You are bound to lose an important piece of the team. So like you said, depth is a major piece in success. We just had an absurd amount of injuries this year in key positions.....or at key times (i.e. both OTs going being out at the same time).
Thats my view/opinion
