No problem. If I hadn't looked into it myself I would have thought the same thing.

Exporting oil was illegal until Obama allowed it. Funny how prices surged right after that too. IMO, if we have to import, we damn sure should be exporting.

how much does a solar farm cost? Short answer: They aren't cheap. The long answer requires answers to a lot more questions. What are you trying to use it to power? Is there land affordable nearby that has good sun exposure? Is there enough land available? Most "solar farms" have had pretty big footprints and can't/don't use verticality. (or at least didn't when I was doing research for a college paper a little ways back) How are you going to store the power? Unlike conventional power plants, solar can't power things through the night without some sort of "battery." How are you going to transmit the power to where it needs to go? How are you going to regulate/convert voltage and balance loads? Do you want to consider operating costs, maintenance, etc? Are you concerned about environmental impact? Really it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Google comes up with $3 million per mega watt, or 500k per acre, and it's generally not worth it to have a farm that would produce less than a mega watt for a utility-scale solar farm. Looks like those numbers are dated a bit, so it could very well be much lower. Random-ish fact. We have "individual" solar farms in the US that cover in excess of 3,200 acres. ...No wonder we have global warming. That would be a really big blacktop parking lot (~5 square miles.) It kind of feels like solar power isn't actually very green when scaled. ....this should probably move to a different thread.... Solar and Wind are actually the cheapest energy sources in the US - due to the large amount of sunshine and cheap land: https://imgur.com/a/AmCiMFjhttps://www.iea.org/reports/projected-costs-of-generating-electricity-2020Coal is the most expensive, because mining coal is very labor intensive.

My assumption has been that the refining process, and the necessary infrastructure, is one of (if not the) main drivers behind our oil import/export practice.

It is very true that we have the ability to refine "dirty oil" that many nations do not. That's why Canada wanted to run their dirty tar sand oil here to be refined through the Keystone pipeline. It's hilarious how so many people actually believe that the Keystone pipeline had anything to do with American oil. It's Canadian oil.

Crazy because they don't even break their stride with gunfire ringing out. Let's be honest.... How many of us would crap their pants at the sound of gunfire ::raises hand:: but they keep walking forward and don't even flinch. I can't even imagine.... All of us would, even the ones with extensive military experience would..... but if you had been hearing it for 2 weeks on a daily basis, knew where it was coming from, and hated the people doing it bad enough, I guess that initial shock doesn't work on you any more. I've been utterly amazed at some of the bombing videos of things being blown up and in the foreground is a person walking along the street and they barely flinch or break stride when a bomb goes off and levels a building just a block and half away. I can't imagine being THAT used to something like that.

I'm trying hard to come to terms with some of these images, and the fact that we're watching a madman with the mentality of a sick, demented child... just playing in his sand box.
I'm starting to think the "invasion" was poorly planned and executed purposefully, so this madman can extend the pleasure of his cruel demolition of land and people.
Meanwhile, we, as a world, sit back waiting for him to do what? Where do we draw the line?
He already has his bombs and missiles, taking away his oil and credit card isn't going to stop him.
Hard to watch. Hard to understand how we don't have better directives for dealing with the scum on this planet.

So what's up with all of the Russian vehicles having this "Z" on them?
If you haven't been paying attention, this Z is on all of their vehicles, some of their uniforms, they had terminally ill children stand out in the courtyard of a hospital in the shape of this Z for a photo-op, a gymnast recently had it on the front his uniform when he accepted a medal (right next to a Ukrainian kid no less). But there hasn't been any official statements, that I'm aware of, to what it means.
Is it just a simple marking so they can tell each other apart since the Russians aren't using their flag during this invasion? My theory is that the Z is for Zelenskyy... as in, he's the ultimate prize in all of this.

Just because he's lost his mind doesn't mean we have to lose ours. NATO and US still have to think strategically.
Supposedly Ukraine had its application in for NATO a while ago, and NATO countries were dragging their feet or something. So if we want to wring our hands over something, it would be that decision (or lack) that happened however many years ago. Not much we can do about it now.
Simple fact is that NATO, EU, US don't want the armed conflict to expand beyond Ukraine. Sucks for the Ukrainians, but that's the way it is. NATO steps in directly, or gets dragged in by doing something like establishing a no-fly zone... not only are you then in conflict with Russia but then China is bound to get involved as well (if not directly in Europe, then by taking advantage and pressing their agenda in South-East Asia).

Have we passed the levels of "war crimes" yet? Wow, some air support sure would be nice right about now... I hope NATO has 10 more days of meetings planned to figure out how to get them some help in a way that is polite and non-confrontational.

Common for military equipment be marked with a symbol to avoid friendly fire.
This is yet another sign of how poorly equipped the Russian military is. We had versions of RFID tags on the vehicles, and our uniforms had IF patches so that we can be identified by other units on the ground or in the air.
Marking yourself and equipment with a big ass Z in chalk…peon stuff right there.

There doesn't seem to be an in between the support being offered now and the choice of war in order to achieve what you want.

Was reading reports on the BBC there there is genuine concern that Putin will also use chemical weapons as well. hard to believe it can get worse but it seems that's where it is heading.

I am still having a hard time figuring out what putin is trying to do here- Is he so embarrassed he is getting his butt kicked he is going to kill woman and children and basically just kill everyone in his way? Is he so wanton to reshape the map to what the ussr used to look like that he will spare no cost? Is he trying somehow to sucker the west/Europe into this to make it a wider conflict and draw us and the rest of NATO into this?

Oh, I know bro. I'm not clamoring for war, I'm just finding it really sad that the whole world has to sit on it's hands. It’s a tough spot to be in and I can empathize. My head certainly wants to avoid military engagement, but my heart is screaming.

My question is what do we do if/when this happens? We’re entertaining the ultimate question that has been underlying the whole construct of the current UN: what happens when a P5 security council member who is nuclear-armed starts breaking the most fundamental norms of international law?

I was on a drive today listening to BBC radio talking about bio labs in the Ukraine, namely Odessa, that could be holding biological warfare agents and that the pentagon may have been financing them. Doing some research, I came across this company. Let's hope some safeguards are in place for these facilities. https://www.bv.com/projects/state-art-diagnostics-laboratory-helps-make-world-saferState-of-the-Art Diagnostics Laboratory Helps Make the World Safer Black & Veatch completed Ukraine’s first Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory in Odessa on time and under budget. The new facility enhances the government’s existing disease surveillance systems to detect, report and respond to bioterrorism attacks, epidemics and potential pandemics. The BSL-3 laboratory in Odessa was designed and constructed by Black & Veatch. It is the first BSL-3 laboratory in the region and the first to be commissioned, accredited and operational under the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP). “Completing the construction effort under budget definitely exceeded our expectations,” said Doug Gorsline, DTRA BTRP Ukraine Project Manager. Bradley Karn, DTRA BTRP Program Manager, added, “More important was the quality of the effort. Black & Veatch was able to renovate a decades-old facility into a state-of-the-art diagnostics laboratory that will become the nexus of Ukraine’s biosurveillance network.” The BSL-3 laboratory was specifically designed and constructed to support work with especially dangerous pathogens that can be naturally occurring or introduced through a bioterrorism attack. It serves as a central location for research, consolidation and training on the proper handling of dangerous pathogens. The lab also provides the Ukrainian Ministry of Health a safe environment to confirm diagnosis of suspected dangerous pathogens, enhancing public health while deterring bioterrorism. As integrating contractor, Black & Veatch is responsible to DTRA and the Ministry of Health for the full rollout of the BTRP in Ukraine. Black & Veatch is ensuring the mission’s success by training Ukrainian personnel in molecular diagnostics, biosafety, operations and maintenance, and laboratory management techniques. This training, along with three years of gradually decreasing sustainment and transition support, will provide Ukrainian scientists with the necessary resources to manage the BSL-3 laboratory and the Ukrainian biosurveillance system going forward.

That speech made me cry. He and his people will all die matyrs because nobody will stick their neck out against a lunatic. This is so heartbreaking.
I get that nobody wants to provoke a lunatic with nukes. How hard is it to send the assassins in? Like seriously. Pretty sure Russia is sick of this guy already.

This is the dry run on how to handle a lunatic with nukes. NATO better figure it out, because at some point NK will be an even worse lunatic with nukes. Fat Boy will just laugh at sanctions because his country is so isolated.
