OHSAA football playoffs preview: First round full of mismatches? Not so fast
Updated: Oct. 27, 2022, 4:12 p.m.|Published: Oct. 27, 2022, 1:20 p.m.

By Matt Goul, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The first week of the OHSAA football playoffs brings its share of mismatches and intrigue.

Last year, during the OHSAA’s first postseason of expanded regions to 16 teams, one No. 1 seed suffered an upset loss in the first round when 5-5 Milan Edison beat Bellevue in the Division IV, Region 14 playoffs.

Upsets can happen, but odds are not in those teams’ favor. Overall, nine teams with sub-.500 records won last year among 224 first-round games.

Of the 224 first-round games this year, there are 69 teams with losing records. Most of those are in Division I, including five of the 16 teams in Region 1. Granted, Region 1 only has 17 teams, and Division I has only 72 total, which is why there are 19 teams with losing records in the playoffs.

By comparison, Division II has 106 total teams in its four regions with only 11 teams that have losing records in the playoffs. Division I’s overall field shrunk when the OHSAA expanded from six to seven divisions in 2013.

As for the other five divisions, here are how many teams are participating in the playoffs with losing records.

⦁ Division III: Four

⦁ Division IV: Three

⦁ Division V: Six

⦁ Division VI: Nine

⦁ Division VII: 17

There are still plenty of big games in Week 11.

Even a Nos. 3 vs. 14 matchup in Division II, Region 5 has the potential to go down the wire, considering Hudson edged Solon by a point in their Week 1 matchup. The Explorers went on to go 10-0 and with the Suburban League National Conference. Solon, with six Division I opponents on its schedule, is 6-4 with that 14-13 loss to open the season.

9 Findlay Liberty-Benton (8-3) at 1 Liberty Center (11-0)

I know it's D V. Liberty center beat Archbold 16-0 in regular season. And LB (liberty benton) thumped Archbold 63-35 last Friday. That should be a real good game.

The Garlock kid from LB throws a wonderful ball, and it gets spread around. LC is more of a running team, although with a change of qb about midway in the season, they can also pass. LB is just quick. The qb is accurate. It'll be played about 20 miles from here. (gorgeous stadium, also - for around here anyway. Turf, packed house every home game....)

That sucks...PG and McComb are in the same conference and have already played each other in the regular season.

It happens to be the same conference that Liberty Benton and Arlington play in.

And Archbold and Liberty Center are in the same league. (states oldest, actually). Last year, Archbold beat Liberty Center in the reg. season, but lost to them in the playoffs. This year, LC beat Archbold in reg. season and we were hoping for a rematch in the playoffs. Liberty Benton totally destroyed that.

LB vs LC should be a real battle.

I don't know much about Coldwater. I DO know Arch lost to Liberty Center 16-0 earlier. Then Liberty Benton thumped us bad. Something like 63-35? 65-35? Then LC thumped LB last week 41-7?

Coldwater finished 2nd in the MAC this year but they had a couple of games that were squeakers and they got thrashed at home by Marion Local for the 1 loss. They are a good team but not the dominate team they've been in years passed.

LCC is who my school (Fort Loramie) played the last game of the season and we beat them by 1 point in a back and forth game, LCC lost to Huron 38-14 back on 9/9 and Coldwater just beat Huron last week 14-3.

I think the Liberty Center - Coldwater game could go either way, the McComb - LCC game I think will go McComb's way.

LC vs. Coldwater. 14-0 at half, LC. 3rd quarter - Lc shut down Coldwater. First drive for l.c., touchdown to make it 21-0. Next possession for Coldwater, they through a pick 6 to make it 28-0.

Lc added another touchdown, but missed the e.p. 34 nothing early in the 4th with a running clock.

Surprised. LC's front 3 are dominating.

OHSAA Releases Football Regional Semifinal Pairings
Neutral sites selected to host Division I, II, III and V games Friday, Division IV, VI and VII games Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the football regional semifinal playoff pairings and neutral sites Sunday afternoon. Division I, II, III and V will play on Friday, while Division IV, VI and VII will play on Saturday. All games kick off at 7 p.m.

A team’s won-lost record, regional seed and state rank do not factor into neutral site selections. Rarely can an available site be found exactly halfway between the two schools. Neutral sites receive a rental fee amount from the OHSAA and they keep revenue from concessions, parking and program sales.

The regional playoffs follow bracket format (see link below).

Tickets for all games must be purchased in advance at www.ohsaa.org/tickets.

Which Seeds Have Advanced to the Third Round
Eight schools seeded ninth or higher have reached the regional semifinals, including four No. 13 seeds, three No. 10 seeds and one No. 9 seed.

Of the 28 regions, 25 No. 1 seeds have advanced, 24 No. 2 seeds, 19 No. 3 seeds, 11 No. 4 seeds, 13 No. 5 seeds, nine No. 6 seeds, one No. 7 seed and two No. 8 seeds.

So, if my source is correct (and he usually is), Coldwater rushed for a total of 12 yds, passed for 52, for a total of 64 offensive yards. The L.C. front three dominate, leaving 8 to defend the pass so often.

L.C. only passed for 28 yds, (they can do better, trust me), but when you rush for 312 yards, why pass? Plus, the 4th quarter was played with a running clock, and L.C. made a lot of offensive substitutions. Impressive, dominant win. I can't stand L.C. during the regular season, but I always pull for the NWOAL in playoffs.

Arch, You wouldn't happen know who played QB for Coldwater would you? Just wondering because Coldwater's QB (Blasingame) who was the MAC player of the year broke his leg the last game of the season and they moved one of their WRs to play QB but even though he wasn't 100% I heard that Blasingame played the 2nd half of Coldwater's game against Huron last week.

From what little video I was able to find, I believe it was #7, Curtiss Duerr. (at quarterback)

Glenville not only won its first OHSAA state football championship under longtime coach Ted Ginn Sr., but the Tarblooders brought home the first state crown for a school from Cleveland's city league. They did it with a 26-6 win vs. Cincinnati Wyoming in the Division IV state championship.

That's awesome.

I always like seeing the public schools get a win since the Catholic schools really have an advantage.

In years past yes. With the way enrollment is now tabulated, not so much.
Two Catholic schools, out of 7 divisions, won state titles. That doesnot equate to a distinct advantage.

In the last 8 years, St. Ed's has won 5 D1 State Championships.

Getting young men to go there has always been easier than not.

Good coaches have made all of the difference in getting the results.
