This would be easy if a couple of Republicans would just vote for Jefferies. I think it would only take 5 to get the job done. Am I right about the math?

Welp, we will be less than a month from the current CR ending with no Speaker in place. Glad Jordan lost though. No Speaker is still better than a horrible Speaker.

Wonder what the Vegas odds are of a shutdown occurring now...

Kinzinger says vote against Jordan ‘almost’ as big as Jan. 6 votes

Kinzinger says vote against Jordan ‘almost’ as big as Jan. 6 votes
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said during a Tuesday television appearance that the vote against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the Republican nominee for Speaker, was nearly as consequential as standing up against the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6.

“This is almost as big in my mind of a moment as standing up against Jan. 6 was for these members,” Kinzinger said in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, before the first round of votes for Speaker.

“As somebody [who has] faced this — and I had to make a decision to basically end my career to do the right thing — it’s well worth it,” Kinzinger said in the interview. “Everybody goes into Congress saying, ‘I’m going to go in and do the right thing. I am going to stand alone if I need to,’ and then, all of a sudden, that fear of a primary is enough to frighten them away.”

Kinzinger predicted that Jordan would not reach the threshold to be elected Speaker on the first round of voting, but he strongly urged Republicans not to relent to the pressure to eventually support Jordan’s candidacy.

“Look, it only takes four or five Republican members of the House of Representatives to be heroes, and literally change the future of this country and this world. When you look at Ukraine and you look at Israel, he would be terrible on both,” Kinzinger said, before adding, “I think there are enough to deny Jordan on the first round. My personal hope is they stick it out.”

Kinzinger railed against Jordan, stressing his key role in former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and calling the Trump ally the worst pick for House Speaker, except for “maybe … like Matt Gaetz.”

“Jim Jordan has been one of the absolute worst members of the House of Representatives, simply from just the governing perspective. I think he’s passed almost nothing, if anything at all,” Kinzinger said.

The former Illinois lawmaker also told Bash that Jordan truly believes Democrats are evil and must be defeated at all costs.

“He doesn’t say that metaphorically. He truly believes that you have to defeat the Democrats or the liberals by any means necessary, and they’re close to giving him the Speaker’s gavel,” Kinzinger said.

Just wanted to add where I saw that "extreme lefty" John Boehner referred to Jordan as a "legislative terrorist":

"John A. Boehner, a former Republican House speaker, called his fellow Ohioan a "legislative terrorist" and said he had never seen "a guy who spent more time tearing things apart — never building anything, never putting anything together."

https://www.yahoo.com/news/column-california-republicans-voted-jim-231700678.html

I'm sure he'll keep trying to get the role, but honestly and objectively, what on earth makes anyone think the guy would make a good Speaker?

There’s diversity of thought, and then there’s just straight up division. The GOP is completely divided, and have no one to blame but themselves.

Spent so much time hating so many different groups of people, only to end up hating each other. Republicans and their voters are the ones who made words like ‘compromise’ and ‘bipartisan’ dirty words, after all.

At least Dems have policies that people can criticize and debate. The GOP is just straight up grievances. Don’t like what the Dems are doing, but don’t have any plans of their own.

I agree... frustrated with my party that they can't come together.... I absolutely hate the woke and the squat and far left... but am in awe that the democrats are able to come together when needed... even the far left fall in line.... GOP has been ridiculous... they win the house but can't figure out who they want to lead them... pick a guy or gal and let's move past this... it's sad and ridiculous....

Any idea as to why Stefanik isn’t running?

Or why Gaetz, who started this whole fiasco, isn’t running?

I think Gaetz is more focused on building his publicity while eyeing the next Governor seat in Florida.

Talk about going from bad to worse.

That state is a real hotbed of infamous politicians.

What is everyone's prediction for this? Let's go ahead and make it fun and speculate.

I think it'll be McHenry after weeks of desperation and a shutdown threat, if not an actual shutdown.

If I actually felt I could make any sense out of the direction this would go I would wade in. But nothing going on makes any sense. Jordon is a member of a gang of about 30 in the House that's created the mess the party is in and he received 200 votes yesterday. He is represents one of the most extreme wings of the party of which the majority of them blame for their problems yet they lined up behind him offering no other option on the floor. It boggles the mind while at the very same time I'm not surprised by it.

I think the plan is for Jordon to hold out until the time is close to a shut down and use the looming shut down to pressure the hold outs to fall in line. Will that work? At this point who knows? But even with a looming shut down, if they make Jordon Speaker he would only support something that the senate nor Biden would ever sign off on.

Just for those who aren't keeping up, Jordan lost two more votes today than yesterday. While I'm not pointing that out as it as indication of how this will all play out I found it interesting and worth noting.

Most rational people would see that as a sign to quit. However, this is Jordan we are talking about so anything is possible.

I think 5 centrists GOPers will cross the line and make Jeffries speaker… right after hell freezes over. And it cracks me up, because Jeffries is probably the only one who could successfully lead this House during this term. By default, Jeffries would eliminate the MAGA grasp on GOPers and allow for bipartisan legislation to move through. Dems won’t work with the MAGA political terrorists in any way. Hell their own party hates them.

I love the stupid look of disbelief on Jordan’s face and several other MAGAts. They can’t believe they are not popular. This happens when you live in a bubble of your own creation.

I was half-listening to the news this morning as I was wrangling the kids. Apparently there are interesting nuggets in how these votes are unfolding... ex. agreements by moderate GOP'ers that had them only agreeing to vote for him only once (meaning they'd only help him if he got it in 1 shot) and others just flipping without warning. I couldn't really listen as closely as I wanted and probably wouldn't make sense of it even if I did.

Seems like the same chaos that brought him so close to the gavel will sweep him away just as quickly. Apparently the groups trying to put this situation to bed are already beginning to move on to the next options.

I heard that, too. Tapper reported it this morning as well.

I really don't know a viable solution out of this mess. The R's will never vote for Jeffries. My prediction was McHenry, and it may very well go that route, but then he'd have to pull a McCarthy to avoid a shutdown, and then we'd probably have another 3 month CR and then he would be ousted.

And some Republicans are still singing that tune predicting a third vote will turn out even worse for Jordan.....

Jordan detractors believe it gets 'a lot worse' for him on a third speakership ballot

"Around three is probably going to be the final straw," said Rep. Steve Womack, who has opposed Jordan through two ballots.

Multiple Republicans are predicting that Rep. Jim Jordan would lose even more votes if or when he moves to a third ballot.

"I personally think, if we go to a third vote, it's going to get a lot worse," said Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.), who has opposed Jordan through two ballots. "Around three is probably going to be the final straw."

He's not alone in his prediction. One House GOP member, granted anonymity to speak candidly, predicted 10 to 15 new "no" votes on a third ballot.

"I won’t vote for him again," that GOP lawmaker said.

Jordan reiterated Tuesday after the second ballot vote that he's not planning to drop out, saying "we’ll continue to talk and listen to our colleagues."

The funny thing is he needs I think 3 or less "No" votes and he just went from 20 to 22, in the wrong direction. McCarthy's nomination was a fiasco, but at least he was going in the right direction. Jordan is going in the wrong direction.

Jordan holdouts get death threats over gavel fight, GOP speaker nominee condemns

Jordan's spokesperson denounces 'abhorrent' threats against GOP lawmakers

Several House Republicans who are not voting in favor of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan's speaker bid said they have received death threats over their votes.

GOP Reps. Marianette Miller-Meeks of Iowa and Nick LaLota of New York said they have received death threats after not voting for Jordan's speakership bid.

Jordan's office has denounced the death threats, with spokesperson Russell Dye calling the actions "abhorrent" and having "no place in a civil discourse."

"No one should receive threats and it needs to stop," Dye said. "We have condemned these actions repeatedly."

"It is important that Republicans stop attacking each other and come together," he added.

Miller-Meeks released a statement on Wednesday night about the "credible death threats" she has received after voting for House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, for speaker over Jordan in the second round of voting.

The Iowa Republican said Jordan "was not able to secure enough votes" to take the gavel after supporting him in the first round and her "initial concerns about threatening tactics of Jim Jordan's supporters, including from members of Congress, increased despite assurances."

She also said she voted for Granger "because she has demonstrated great leadership this year by bringing forth, and passing, fiscally responsible, single-subject appropriations bills and is a staunch conservative."

So was Liz Cheney

"However, since my vote in support of Chairwoman Granger, I have received credible death threats and a barrage of threatening calls," Miller-Meeks said. "The proper authorities have been notified and my office is cooperating fully."

"One thing I cannot stomach, or support is a bully," she continued. "Someone who threatens another with bodily harm or tries to suppress differing opinions undermines opportunity for unity and regard for freedom of speech."

"That's why I spoke out forcefully against censorship and suppression during the COVID-19 pandemic," Miller-Meeks said. "I did not stand for bullies before I voted for Chairwoman Granger and when I voted for Speaker designee Jordan, and I will not bend to bullies now."

Meanwhile, LaLota tweeted a picture of an email he said he received, telling him to go "f--- yourself and die."

"If I see your face, I will whip all the hair out of your f---ing head you f---ing scumbag," the person wrote.

LaLota wrote that his "vote card belongs to me and the people of [New York's] First Congressional District."

"I will not succumb to threats," LaLota tweeted. "Rather, I’ll support a Speaker candidate who will fund the WTC Health Fund, Nat’l Flood Insurance and SALT, while keeping the [government] open [and] secure border [and] cut spending."

Additionally, Florida Republican Rep. John Rutherford, who voted against Jordan on Wednesday, pinned the blame for threats against his staff on the GOP speaker nominee.

"He is absolutely responsible for it," Rutherford said, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. "And look, it doesn’t work — especially against people like [Scalise] and others."

"Nobody likes to have their arm twisted. Talking about individuals’ wives and those sorts of things?" Rutherford was quoted as saying. "That’s just not acceptable."

Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, also spoke out against the threats on X, formerly Twitter, writing that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise earned his "vote for Speaker in the last two rounds."

"He has repeatedly proven his leadership as our conference's Majority Leader, and I am honored to support him," Simpson said.

"Intimidation and threatening tactics do not — and will not — work," he added.

Additionally, some people have reportedly sent Nebraska GOP Rep. Don Bacon's wife anonymous messages threatening to remove him from his job unless he votes for Jordan.

Some House Republicans have spoken out about the threats against members, with New York Rep. George Santos, who is voting for Jordan, saying he will join his colleagues against the House Judiciary Committee chairman's speakership bid "in protest" if the threats continue.

"I’m for Jim Jordan for speaker but, if the nasty hatred and attacks against some of my colleagues continue I will be joining them in protest," Santos tweeted on Thursday. "America first always!"

"However attacking good patriots is not the way to get them on your side," he wrote. "We need to have dialogue to bring them onboard team Jordan!"

Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida, who has consistently voted for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to return to the gavel, condemned the threats.

"It is despicable that my dear friend and colleague [Miller-Meeks], a doctor [and] Army Lt. Colonel, has received credible death threats for voting for her candidate of preference," Gimenez wrote.

"This has never been seen before in a Speaker’s Race," Gimenez continued. "It must be universally condemned."

The threats come as a third vote for Jordan's speaker bid remain uncertain.

The House is heading into yet another day without a speaker, and potentially another day of votes amid Republican infighting and a failure to rally enough support — twice over — for Jordan.

Wednesday's vote saw Jordan lose some supporters in his failed second bid for the speaker's gavel, culminating in the House dispersing that night.

Scalise said the next votes in the House would take place no earlier than 12:00 p.m. ET Thursday.

MAGA GOPers have effectively crippled the institution of congress. I’m sure Trump approves. They are domestic political terrorists. I wish them all the worst.

Jim Jordan Will Not Seek a Third Speaker Vote

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...seek-a-third-speaker-vote/#disqus_thread

Comment section is in peak form.

Well, looks like 2 factions in the GOP. MAGA or American First or tea party or whatever name they decide to settle on, and traditional conservatives.

They all look crazy to me.

Jordan vows to stay in speaker race as tensions erupt inside GOP meeting

Tensions are boiling over among House Republicans on Thursday afternoon as the conference searches for a viable path forward with Rep. Jim Jordan so far vowing to stay in the race to be the next speaker despite substantial resistance.

Jordan affirmed Thursday that he is still running for the speaker’s gavel and said he plans to talk to House Republicans who have opposed his candidacy in two floor votes. The Ohio Republican faces an uphill battle to win over holdouts, however, and is under growing pressure from within the GOP conference to drop out.

A closed-door GOP conference meeting on Thursday turned heated, multiple sources told CNN, with some members railing against Jordan, and one swearing at Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who led the rebellion against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, whose ouster has led to the more than two week leadership vacuum.

There was also debate during the meeting over whether Republicans should support a resolution to temporarily expand the powers of interim Speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry – a controversial move that would put the House even further into uncharted territory following McCarthy’s historic ouster.

House Republicans later emerged from the three-hour meeting that went on with a new plan: Scrap the resolution to empower McHenry and instead go forward with more floor votes for Jordan. Members left the room saying that Jordan said it was his intention to hold another floor vote on Thursday instead of moving forward with a resolution to empower McHenry.

In a sign of the emotional tone of the meeting, Gaetz was at one point told to sit down by McCarthy, a California Republican, and refused to do so, which led to Rep. Mike Bost of Illinois becoming “all emotional and ugly and was cussing him,” and “telling him it’s all his fault,” one member said describing the meeting.

Other sources, confirming this exchange, said McCarthy “yelled” at Gaetz to sit down. And when Gaetz didn’t listen, another member in the room yelled “sit the f*** down, Matt.”
Effort to empower McHenry also faces opposition

Other Republicans, including some who supported Jordan, railed against him for backing the resolution to expand the powers of the interim Speaker McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina. Some members encouraged Jordan to drop out of the race. There was also an emotional and heated discussion over the death threats some Jordan holdouts are facing.

Gaetz later told reporters of McCarthy, “I think his passions are a little inflamed, and he’s working through the stages of grief.”

The idea of empowering McHenry has faced broad opposition from many Republicans and would have required support from Democrats for it to pass.

Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana called the resolution to empower McHenry a “giant betrayal” to Republican voters and the “biggest F-U” to GOP voters since a majority of House Republicans may vote against it.

Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon told CNN that Jordan “needs to get out,” saying it would be a problem for him if Jordan doesn’t run for a third ballot but remains in the race as a speaker-designee.

“He needs to keep voting and then he needs to get out. He doesn’t have the votes, it’s going to get worse for him, so let’s not delay this,” he said.

Jordan, who has made a name for himself as a hardline conservative agitator, has so far vowed to stay in the race despite two failed votes for the gavel.

In a sign of growing opposition to his candidacy, Jordan fared worse in a second round of voting on Wednesday than he had in the first vote a day earlier.

After Wednesday’s failed speaker vote, a number of Republicans who oppose Jordan expressed outrage over what they described as a pressure campaign against them by Jordan allies – and made clear they won’t be swayed. Several Republicans who opposed Jordan said they are experiencing angry calls, menacing messages and even death threats since casting their votes. Jordan on Wednesday condemned the death threats, saying “it’s just wrong.”

The House remains effectively frozen as Republicans fail to coalesce around a viable alternative to McCarthy after the former speaker was ousted in a historic vote by a group of conservative hardliners.

Now, more moderate and mainstream Republicans are the ones digging in, with some concerned over the prospect of a conservative firebrand like Jordan as speaker and others angry over the role hardliners played in pushing out McCarthy and then opposing House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s bid for speaker.
Opposition to Jordan grew in between votes

During the first round of voting, 20 House Republicans voted against Jordan. In the second round, that number rose to 22. There were four new Republican votes against Jordan and two that flipped into his column.

Given the narrow House GOP majority, Jordan can only afford to lose a handful of votes and the high number of votes against him so far puts the gavel far out of reach for now.

If Jordan withdraws, then other candidates could jump into the race. Among those considering a run: Reps. Jodey Arrington of Texas, Jack Bergman of Michigan and Mike Johnson of Louisiana, according to GOP sources. But they would all struggle to get to 217 votes.

Jordan is a polarizing figure in the speaker’s fight. He is a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, and helped found the hardline House Freedom Caucus. As the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, he has also been a key figure in House GOP-led investigations.

His struggle to win the gavel has highlighted the limits of Trump’s influence in the speaker’s race after the former president endorsed Jordan.

It took McCarthy 15 rounds of voting in January to secure the gavel.

Some Republicans, however, have argued that given the unprecedented situation the House is now in without a speaker the current race should not go on for that long.

A fast-approaching government shutdown deadline and conflict unfolding abroad has also fueled calls for Republicans to bring an end to the leadership vacuum as soon as possible.

Now they wish to make special rules enabling the temporary speaker to have the power to run the house so they can drag this out forever? A speaker who was never elected speaker? So they think it's okay to make some special rule to help cover up their dysfunctional party divisions?

Comment section is in peak form.

Well, looks like 2 factions in the GOP. MAGA or American First or tea party or whatever name they decide to settle on, and traditional conservatives.

They all look crazy to me.

Even the traditional conservatives aren't even that anymore. It's just that the needle has moved so far now that they look traditional. It's really like "Vanilla Post-Gingrich Corporatist Greed Style" caucus and "Hey, we can even be crazier than them, MAGA!" caucus. I really can't identify anyone in there that I could identify with from a traditional conservative standpoint anymore. Anyone who even came close has been ousted after the Trump impeachment anyhow.

Ha! He's still not dropping out! It's so sad and somewhat scary that it's actually funny now.

10 years ago, I wouldn't have agreed with that, but given the current state of the Republican party, I agree.. They simply don't have the best interest of America in their hearts.

This is something I've not said often, But Trump was right the other day. Republicans are eating their own. I don't think I've seen a party in this much disarray ever.

Not done yet, but looks like Jordan is gonna lose out by at least 25 votes this time.
