The GOP presidential candidate has also waded into conspiracy theories about 9/11.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy voiced support for a variety of far-right conspiracy theories at the fourth GOP presidential primary debate Wednesday, suggesting at one point that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was an "inside job."

"Why am I the only person on this stage, at least, who can say that Jan. 6 now does look like it was an inside job?" Ramaswamy said, before he listed other topics popular in conspiracy circles.

"That the government lied to us for 20 years about Saudi Arabia's involvement in 9/11? That the great replacement theory is not some grand right-wing conspiracy theory, but a basic statement of the Democratic Party's platform? That the 2020 election was indeed stolen by Big Tech?"

The Capitol riot conspiracy theory in particular gained steam after Jan. 6 rioter Ray Epps was accused without evidence of being a government informant or agent, with detractors arguing that the attack on the Capitol in 2021 was a "false flag" event.

More than 1,200 defendants have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot, and over 400 have been sentenced to periods of incarceration. Over a thousand other Jan. 6 participants have been identified but not arrested.

Ramaswamy’s comments about Jan. 6 follow recent conspiratorial remarks he made about the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In an August story published by The Atlantic, Ramaswamy told the publication that he wanted “the truth about 9/11.”

“I think it is legitimate to say how many police, how many federal agents, were on the planes that hit the Twin Towers. Maybe the answer is zero. It probably is zero for all I know, right? I have no reason to think it was anything other than zero. But if we’re doing a comprehensive assessment of what happened on 9/11, we have a 9/11 commission, absolutely that should be an answer the public knows the answer to,” he said in The Atlantic’s interview.

Ramaswamy later stood by the remarks. “It is important to have a government that tells the truth to its people, that people can trust, and trust its people back,” he said.

Ramaswamy isn't the only Republican politician to have promoted a Jan. 6 conspiracy theory in recent weeks.

Last month, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah shared a post on X that argued there were "undercover federal agents disguised as MAGA."

"I can’t wait to ask FBI Director Christopher Wray about this at our next oversight hearing," Lee wrote in his tweet.

The man Lee was referring to in the post is a Trump supporter currently serving four years in federal prison on Jan. 6-related charges.

And just when you thought nobody could out whackamole rump, along comes Ramaswamy.

Ramajackass… I wanted to smack him over the way he talked to Haley, and I don’t even like her. Anybody that would think he’s a viable leader is as dumb as an eon is long. And at least it was nice to see Chris Christie come to her defense. He and Hailey are the only choices GOPers really have at a leader with even a modicum of decency and common sense. I just skimmed debate highlights. I missed that part by Ranaswamy but I’m not surprised by it.

I did think it was interesting that DeSantis put his reverence for Calvin Coolidge on display. I’m pretty sure he was famous for doing nothing and leading right into the Great Depression.

They don't care about us being stupid. They only care about and count on the people who vote for them being stupid.

And strategically, I can't blame them. The amount of mental gymnastics and cognitive dissonance we've witnessed from the constituency to keep voting for these reps (Johnson, Jordan, Gaetz, MTG, etc.) is truly mind-blowing.

I think it's an extension of an actually valid point that Trump brought up where he said "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" I think it just more applies to that faction as a whole. Ramaswamy is seizing on it now too. Same with Johnson when it comes to the point Daman brought up. How he nuances that the tapes will absolve some of those involved yet he still wants to blur out their faces goes back to my first sentence.

Cheney goes after Ramaswamy ‘inside job’ remarks

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) slammed Vivek Ramaswamy over his claims during the fourth GOP presidential debate that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol was an “inside job.”

“If what he means by ‘inside job’ is it was a sitting president of the United States who launched a coup against the government, that there were members of the House of Representatives who helped him … that absolutely is true,” she said Thursday on “CBS Mornings.”

She was asked to respond to Ramaswamy’s heated remarks during the debate Wednesday where he made a series of unproven claims about the Jan. 6 attack and the 2020 election.

“The real enemy is not Donald Trump. It’s not even Joe Biden. It is the deep state that at least Donald Trump attempted to take on,” Ramaswamy said Wednesday. “And if you want somebody who’s going to speak truth to power, then vote for somebody who’s going to speak the truth to you. Why am I the only person on the stage at least who can say that Jan. 6 now does look like it was an inside job?”

He went on to claim that the 2020 election “was indeed stolen by Big Tech” and the 2016 election “was stolen from [Trump] by the national security establishment.”

Cheney compared what Ramaswamy said to “Area 51 conspiracy theory garbage” in the interview Thursday. She said Ramaswamy is “the dream of the Chinese Community Party” and “of the Russian government.”

“What he is doing and saying and the extent to which he is just serving as a really destructive force is something that our adversaries I’m sure are pleased about,” she said.

Cheney, who served as the vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6 riot, made an appearance to discuss the GOP debate Wednesday night and her new book, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning.” She has been on a media tour over the last week to promote the new book and has frequently criticized former President Trump and the Republican Party.

Wednesday’s debate in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was hosted by NewsNation. The cable news channel is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns The Hill.

The Hill has reached out to Ramaswamy’s campaign for comment.

Trump declares Ramaswamy winner of the fourth GOP debate: ‘Because he thinks I’m great’

Former President Trump weighed in on the recent Republican primary debate, taking shots at his 2024 rivals and declaring entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy the winner.

“So many people are asking what I thought of history’s lowest rated ‘presidential’ debate, & how would I rate the players. It’s so easy to be a critic, but who on this subject would be better than me,” he posted early Saturday morning on Truth Social.

“To begin with, I thought Ron DeSanctimonious was terrible, with his bobble head facial movements & his walking on eggs, but that Sloppy Chris Christie was worse. He’s not fit, mentally or physically, to be President plus, he suffers from TDS, or Trump Derangement Syndrome, at levels not seen before,” he wrote, calling the former New Jersey governor a “sick puppy” and criticizing his low poll numbers.

He continued, saying the campaign of former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson — who did not qualify for the debate earlier this week — dead.

“But so is Ron, whose weird bobbing head and fresh mouth, make his high heels look good — He’s walking on eggs! Birdbrain looked different & lost, but I give her second place,” he quipped, referring to former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

“Vivek WINS because he thinks l’m great,” the former president added.

The fourth GOP primary debate, held Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and hosted by NewsNation, was the last one to be sanctioned by the Republican National Committee (RNC) in the primary cycle. NewsNation is owned by Nexstar Media Group, who also owns The Hill.

The committee announced Friday that they would not sponsor debates in 2024, and freed the candidates to participate in other forums.

Trump in his late night post also knocked debate moderator Megyn Kelly, calling her “the biggest loser” of the event.

“The biggest loser was Megyn Kelly, what the hell happened to her?” Trump said in his post. “She has lost whatever she once had, which wasn’t very much. Some things never change!”

Despite the former president’s praise, Ramaswamy has faced scrutiny over his performance in the debate earlier this week, in which he called Haley a “fascist” and claimed Christie’s “version of foreign policy experience was closing a bridge from New Jersey to New York.”

“Most of the people do not like the below-the-belt punches,” Republican strategist Scott Jennings said. “You know, too-cute-by-a-half rhetorical. You know, sneak attacks — whatever you want to call it. They just think it’s out of bounds, especially coming from him.”

Jennings noted that while Ramaswamy may have tried to act in the style of Trump, it did not work for him.

“Trump’s brand and image were so strong on the front end, that it gave him the latitude and credibility to engage with his opponents in some of the ways Vivek is — it’s just he doesn’t bring that to the race,” the strategist said, arguing that the millennial entrepreneur doesn’t have the “personal warmth and humor” of the former president.

Ramaswamy’s campaign has attempted to push back on the criticism.

“I think that if people actually saw Vivek on the campaign trail, which we put out tons of footage, it shows Vivek’s warm,” senior advisor for Ramaswamy’s campaign Tricia McLaughlin said.

“Vivek is gonna speak his convictions no matter what, and some people are gonna like it, and some people are gonna hate it,” she added later.
