I absolutely believe Stefanski should be in serious consideration for COY. His current odds on FanDuel are +1100. Jump on it now!

Current odds:

Steichen +280 (good argument for COY if they make the playoffs)
Campbell +300 (losses to some meh teams, soft schedule)
Ryans +320 (good argument for COY even if they miss out on playoffs)
McDaniel +800 (did not face enough adversity)
Shanahan +800 (did not face enough adversity)

Interesting because there been some of this Board who convinced themselves Stefanski is horrible and should be fired.

He definitely deserves it IMO. When you look at the challenges and the teams we've beaten

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

No doubt he should be coach of the year.

I haven't seen any NFL coach this year do more with less since the injury bug hit and that started out early.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

2023 NFL Coach of the Year odds: Steichen lone favorite to win; Campbell and Ryans close
Updated Dec. 20, 2023 10:35 a.m. ET

Don't look now, but the NFL Coach of the Year (COY) race is heating up.

And there's a new lone favorite at the top of the oddsboard — Indianapolis' Shane Steichen.

Steichen's odds to win COY were +650 a week ago. But the Colts have won five of their last six, including a Week 15, 30-13 victory over the Steelers. Now he sits at +280 to win the prestigious coaching honor.

Behind him at second on the board is Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell.

Campbell opened as the betting favorite to win the award before the season kicked off at +850. With the Lions at an impressive 10-4 and on top of the NFC North Division, his COY odds have shortened to +300.

Next on the list is Houston's DeMeco Ryans. The Texans coach's odds of winning the award were +2200 before the season. Now that the Texans are 8-6 — largely due to the play of C.J. Stroud — those odds have come all the way down to +320.

Let's take a closer look at the Coach of the Year odds for all the contenders.

NFL COACH OF THE YEAR ODDS*

Shane Steichen, Colts: +280 (bet $10 to win $38 total)
Dan Campbell, Lions: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total)
DeMeco Ryans, Texans: +320 (bet $10 to win $42 total)
Mike McDaniel, Dolphins: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total)
Kyle Shanahan, 49ers: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total)
Kevin Stefanski, Browns: +1100 (bet $10 to win $120 total)
John Harbaugh, Ravens: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)
Zac Taylor, Bengals: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)
Sean McVay, Rams: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)
Sean Payton, Broncos: +4000 (bet $10 to win $410 total)
Mike McCarthy, Cowboys: +6000 (bet $10 to win $610 total)
Nick Sirianni, Eagles: +7500 (bet $10 to win $760 total)
Kevin O'Connell, Vikings: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)
Matt LeFleur, Packers: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)

*odds as of 12/20/2023

On a recent episode of the NFL on FOX Podcast, NFL Insider Dave Helman and AFC South reporter Ben Arthur praised Ryans.

"This really shows the work that DeMeco Ryans has done with the defense," Arthur said as he explained how Ryans has coached the Texans despite Stroud being in concussion protocol.

"As the year has worn on, they've continued to get better and better."

Is DeMeco Ryans CHANGING the culture for Texans, CJ Stroud?
One coach whose odds fell after rising up the oddsboard is Denver's Sean Payton.

His odds were +1200 but after the Broncos fell 42-17 in Week 15 at Detroit, Payton's COY odds lengthened to +4000.

So, which coach will walk away with the trophy? For that, we turned to FOX Sports NFL analyst Geoff Schwartz.

Mike McDaniel, Dolphins

The Dolphins second-year head coach is a perfect candidate for this award. McDaniel's Dolphins team will win games if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can stay healthy. When Tua started and finished the game, the Dolphins were 8-4 last season. Assuming he's healthier than last season, the Dolphins should get into the 10-win range.

If you include their improvements on defense — including the addition of Jalen Ramsey and new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio — the Dolphins could win the division. If the Dolphins can pull off a division win with Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen on rival squads, plus a Patriots team with a competent offense, all the praise will be heaped onto McDaniel.

His lively interactions with the media can also help McDaniel win this award. His viral sound bites often show how much media members like him. Those are all factors when humans are voting for this award.

At these odds, he is worth a sprinkle.

Dan Campbell is doing a good job in Detroit, But he has had a lot stability and the media loves him because of his personality. He is a likable guy

Kevin deserves it

No matter what happens IMO Haslam will give him an extension.

Coach of the Year, playoffs, playoff win and more. All would be fantastic.

But behind the scenes Haslam is happy with his leadership. There would be no advantage for him to go looking for another head coach.

I highly doubt he wants to do that. That process is exhausting, risky, and in many cases leads to more problems. A new head coach has to hire a staff. They have their own schemes that the players would have to learn. The players on the team are not their guys. They were not acquired or drafted to fit into what is now in place. Everybody would have to learn about each other. What about Berry then? Change is complicated.

Kevin Stefanski will continue being the head coach. And that is a damn good thing.

That's horrifying.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

At first I thought there was no way that was true. Then I went through all of our coaches and indeed found it to be true.

He’s proved himself to me, that’s for sure. And I had to be one of his bigger critics on here. I wanted him gone. Turns out, under pressure, he can coach his butt off. Now we need him to do that when we’re loaded for bear and healthy. COY, easy. If not, he was robbed.

EDIT: HOWEVER, his play calling is still suspect and at times his clock management is baffling.

I've had reservations about KS and his play calling - I still do. This year he's done a amazing job. This year faced with these injuries and revoloving personell he's been beyond anything I could have hoped for in terms of finding a way to win ... To be fair and balanced that has a LOT to do with the defense. Take this last week versus Chicago - we won but the offense gave away 14 of the 17 points the Bears scored. So if your defense is giving up 3 points a game, it's easier to find a way to win .... In an earlier post I highlighted that while Watson's record this year as a starter is 5-1 - in 3 of those games the Browns gave up a combined total of 6 points, so that has to be a factor.... but given the 3rd stringers playing along the OL and Joe Flaco coming in so late - KS does deserve huge kudos.

If we end up extending him I don't think anyone should complain .... that said, I'm going to be interested to see how KS performs when given a complete team and not overcoming adversity. If I have a concern at the moment it is that KS is at his best when he's got a Covid year or a year like this season strewn with injury and adversity - but when things are 'good' somehow the team underperforms. We still see issues with the play calling even during this season and even as we win in tough times. Some think we shouldn't be critical when we win and if we win then there can be no examination of perceived issues, I disagree with that. I also think there are managers in all sports who do well in some situations (managing less talented teams for example) who don't do so well in other situations (managin uber talented teams). No-where is that more evident than in soccer. As ever as Browns fans all we can do is hope for the best for our team.

The weirdest thing about the Stefanski era is that when all looks lost, we look great. When all looks great, we look lost.

I'm not knocking him either. I want him extended. I actually think, for the most part, he's managed the clock really well over the years, aside from a gaffe or two. I agree on the playcalling being iffy. I thought 2020 was his best year playcalling, oddly enough.

Now from Peter King and all over the media comes "Kevin Stefanski should be the Coach of the Year."

All the "he should give up play calling and we should run the ball" is fading fast. Don't hear much from those who wanted him gone and posted nothing but junk about how KS needs to be fired.

Not many of those posts now. In fact no posts when things are going good from all those critics.

The one guy who really counts is taking this all in and that is Haslam.

Haslam is all aboard the Kevin train.

That is good enough for me.

I don't know that I would consider Haslam's judgement "good enough for me" given his track record, but Stefanski leading this team who is on their 4th starting QB to a 9-5 season given all the other injuries as well is good enough for me. He's taken a team that looks like a MASH unit into playoff contention and no amount of picking him apart by the usual suspects will change that.

Well I just listened Amari Cooper on Rich Eisen's show and he thinks KS is a great play caller.

One of the things he mentioned is how KS will listen to players. He said at times he would say "I think I can beat this guy on this route." Kevin will call that play.

He mentioned that he is not afraid to adjust during games.

So, I will go with Amari and other players on their opinions.

Here is the reality.

If KS was replaced with another person calling the plays. It would make no difference who that person was. People would complain.

No person calling plays is going to be right all the time. I remember when Bruce Arians called plays for the Browns. Every week people bitched. He goes to the Steelers. They bitch. He becomes a head coach in Tampa and he is a genius.

I have listened to armchair head coaches for many moons. They all think they could call the plays.

When a play works or does not work. The guy calling that play has more information than anyone would care to look at.

Some plays work. Some do not. Sometimes the other guys make a play. Sometimes our guys fail to execute.

KS has shown a great ability to keep the ship going through troubled (very troubled) waters, which is a good sign obviously.

I also can really tell that he's become more assured as a leader .. and I think he really connects with Flacco much more than Watson, just from my eye.

Raise your hand if you thought Kev was delighted on the inside when Hopkins got hurt. Gave him free rein to do the two things he likes the most…let it rip and go for it on 4th down. He’s probably begging Berry not to bring in a kicker.

Quite possibly the stupidest post one has seen on this board.

I am positive that "quite possibly" does not belong in your sentence.

Thanks. You've just ruined Christmas!

I had no idea it was a parody account. Not on X too often, but more and more it seems like the go-to site.

I've said many times how much I love Cooper and how I think he's the best WR we've had since the return. We had Josh Gordon look like superman for a season, and that was truly special. But as a practitioner of his craft, Cooper is exceptional. In addition to which he's very much all class and in the Nick Chubb mold of wanting to let his play do the talking. Love it.

Flacco is the perfect match for Cooper's skills.

Cooper is not like Tyreek Hill where his speed gets wide separation. Amari is subtle in movement as he sets up a db to his route. He will get the guy's hips in the direction he needs to break the route open. He gets that step. Flacco sees the route and coverage. He knows the spot to throw to before the break. He anticipates the open window.

Precise route running and quarterback experience along with an accurate arm equals completions.

They put on a show against the Texans against good corners. I expect them to continue that success. Because trust counts. The more Joe throws to Cooper the stronger the connection.

If we could have one injury miraculously heal and could play now it would be Chubb. Nick would make the Browns deadly.

But here we are in control of our fate. So let it ride.

rofl

You obviously think you're more qualified for the job since you second guess him all the time. Should I start a petition for you?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

It's amazing how much better a great WR looks and plays when you have a QB who is capable of delivering the ball to him.

Most of the time when I hear pressers. The questions are not that good and the answers are taken from stock.

You can tell most coaches hate these press sessions. Once in a while there are some good questions.

IMO you can tell to a degree how KS thinks offensively. He is going to game plan around what might work based upon film study of the opposition but mostly he is going to do what his players do best. He leans into what players he likes in certain situations.

We are seeing that in the connection between Joe and Amari. In red zone or other situations he may look to Njoku. I loved the wild cat play near the goal line to Ford and the fake to Flacco. It was a perfect play there.

IMO KS in most cases has had good game plans. There were a couple that were not so good. Play calling is complicated because there is a lot going on in a single play on both sides of the ball. Sometimes a good play can go wrong. So I take play calling with a grain of salt.

Same for me. I'm not feeling bad for enjoying it while it lasted, though. :-p

Flacco now vibing with both Amari and Njoku is huge. Moore just needs to have his breakout game as well. Having multiple receiving options that are getting hot helps us score points and gives defenses more to think about.
