BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Quarterback Ken Dorsey signed a 3-year contract extension with the Cleveland Browns today.
The Browns acquired Dorsey in a 2006 trade with San Francisco.
He was waived by the club at the end of training camp, but was re-signed by Cleveland on September 11th -- the same day starter Charlie Frye was traded to Seattle.
He's served as a mentor for Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn this season and would have become a free agent after this season.
Dorsey's knowledge of first-year offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski's system has been vital in Anderson's development.
Dorsey and Chudzinski were previously together at the University of Miami.

Give Chudzinski a raise,a contract extention,a promotion, all of the above. He is more than deserving to say the least.I would have done this first and then gave Dorsey the extension.

Good news. He's an excellent number 3 QB and brings more value to this team than most other number 3 QBs in the league.

i agree... so tell me how many 3rd string QB's do you know get 3 year contract extensions after being cut earlier in the season... It must have been a promise behind the scenes...

SWEET...Solid move Savage...
Dare I say...Is this "Writing on the Wall"...Quinn with Dorsey as the 2...I have ZERO problem with that...Dorsey's biggest problem is the arm strength...NOT anything between the ears...I want Dorsey up Quinn's butt all off season...
GREAT MOVE...
Go Browns!!!

I have a serious problem with with you having ZERO problem with that....
Dorsey as our primary backup?
Surely you jest.
What we just did was give a contract extension to a player-coach. I have no problem with him being the 3rd QB, but as Quinn's primary backup? Ha!
Either Anderson or Quinn will be the starter down the road. Apparently, Dorsey has done a good job mentoring them both, so he remains as the player-coach while either one developes. However, that doesn't mean he's any way qualified to be the primary backup. We're in trouble if that's the guy we turn to.

my understanding of the NFL's confusing salary cap rules make this move even more appealing to me...
If I understand it correctly we are able to absorb some of the salary cap hit this year.
I was listening to a debate on the radio over the QB situation, and host mentioned how he didnt want anyone in Berea talking about anything other than winning the game this weekend. No talk about BQ/DA, no talk about Indy/Tenn. Just win.
I would argue that Phil Savage needs to be focused on creative ways to use the extra salary cap room from this season, to create more cap space in coming years. That is important for long term stability of the franchise, versus what happened after the 2002 season where the team had to be broken up.

Jest with the Best man... Trust me...I've seen Dorsey over & over & over & over...Hurricane fan here... Never thought he'd even be drafted...And a 7th rounder to ME is NOT drafted...lol... He won't be our 2 regardless of what we do with Anderson...I'm sure of that...But I have no problem with him coming in for a game while {Cough Cough Quinn Cough Cough} is recuppin'...But I'm also extremely confident that Quinn {Cough Cough) won't miss a beat with the OL we've accumulated... Mirror Manning... What's actually SICK is Manning has had the SAME OL Coach AND OC ever since he arrived in the NFL...THAT'S SICK... We're in good shape at QB now...THAT'S the pointy...
Go Browns!!!

Hurrican fan?
You?!
Send back that Christmas fruitcake!
I tend to think that a 7th rounder is actually a guy who has his free agency out of college restricted, hehehe.
Whenever a 3rd stringer is brought in, the team doesn't win. So giving a contract to a guy who's arm is weaker than my own, bur makes our top-2 guys better is fine with me.
We can always just run the option with Cribbs if push comes to shove

Good Move .... U can never have enough SMART football players on your team .. especially not QB's ...
and I'm with U .. as a #2 thats just CRAZY TALK ...
if anyone gives us a #2 for DA we'll pick up a FA QB .. if not DA will back up BQ and that would be a pretty good three some ...

...a little odd to give such an extension to someone you KNOW you don't want in games. After all, he doesn't even get in preseason games. But hey, if he's a good tudor and can wash the team bus then what the hey...

if that's true, I'll drive up to berea and kiss the offices of the cleveland browns. that would be an epic trade.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Good to see, that Dorsey is one hell of a smart kid. He can tutor our players both on and off the field, man is he a class act. I never ever hear him complaining about playing time or whining about not getting to work out with the first team, he just learns and learns and learns. And if someday, the man turns out to be a coach, I wish him well!

Well he's better than Rattay
Seriously - Dorsey looked good running this offense. Ok - he isn't that talented. But he can make the right decisions and throw catchable balls.
Also backup for what? This is the first season since 99 that our QB remained healthy...well in 2001 Couch started all 16 games but he got the crap beat out of him in doing so! This year was different - and we faced some very good pass rush teams. If Payton Manning got hit like he did this season - he'd be a different QB, mentally and physically. I don't see a backup QB being a big need on this team like it isn't in Indy and NE. DA not getting hurt this season was no fluke.
Got news for you...just about every team in the NFL is in trouble if they got to turn to their Backup for a good chunk of the season. I can even see us with only 2 QBs next season on the roster - and a late round rookie on the Practice Squad.

Dorsey is every bit as good a backup as Jim Sorgi or Matt Cassel. If we're going to be elite we need DA or Quinn on the field for 16 games anyways. Whoever we decide to go with, must be durable.

Perfect 3rd string quarterback, IMHO. Good to have him here.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

Great news! It was so frustrating to hear RAC talk about how he was keeping the "three best QBs" in the pre-season, when the 3rd does nothing more than hold a clipboard and mentor most of the time. Dorsey has been absolutely crucial to our QB development and I'm stoked to see that he'll be around to keep it going.
We're... we're good?

This is the guy most wanted canned and only was resigned because Frye imploded in the opener. No way Dorsey is here for another three years...No way. As far as QBs are concerned, he makes a good coach. I know that is an important quality in a 3rd stringer but is there anyone on here who wants to see him in a game? Like ever?

At least you remember things correctly.
I have liked Dorsey all along, and I sure as heck don't remember all of these supporters back in July.

That's probably because they thought there'd be a battle between Anderson and Dorsey for the #2 spot, hehe. As a #3, I don't think anyone really cares since we all know if your #3 is in the game, you're going to lose. I also think that we had no idea he'd help the "younger" QB's. Nobody really knows what Dorsey is doing. We just have to assume he was given the extension for a good reason (cause it sure isn't for his actual ability in the games).

And that sums it up.
He has to be doing something the team feels brings value to the operation.
I have a feeling Dorsey is going to be a fixture in Cleveland in some capacity for as long as Savage is around.

Lets be realistic here, Chud is gonna be a head coach in two-three years if not sooner, Who better to take over Offensive Cordinator than a person who already knows the Offen. inside & out, Maybe Dorsey has that in him, I dont know dont know him well enought, but something to throw out thier

I thought I saw an article about Dorsey saying how much he saw the Coaches had to do, and he said he would not want to be a coach. But then again, when you have to put food on your table, he might change his mind.

j/c...
i think this speaks a lot to the weight of Chud's opinions in the organization...pure speculation on my part, but we all read the offseason fluff pieces about Chud praising Dorsey's knowledge of the game, and his O in particular...
early on, that didn't mean so much...but when Frye imploded and Anderson, the guy that Chud was rumored to favor all along, proved able to handle this offense, i think the keys were handed to Chud, to a large extent...will he have final say?...of course not...but i think his opinion is probably as important to Savage in personnel matters on that side of the ball as RACs, now...i really think his backing of Anderson AND Dorsey have bought him that credibility...
Browns fans are born with it...

I said it earlier this season and I say it again now. I do not think the Browns will carry 3 QB's next season. The O line is just good enough to keep our QB, whomever that may be from getting killed. IMHO it is not an absolute requirement that the Browns carry 3 QB's next season. I do think the Browns will carry a 3rd QB, but it will be on the practice squad. Makes me wonder if the Browns aren't planing for life after DA???

Not me I always wanted Dorsey ... ALWAYS .... I thought DA would be cut before the opener .. glad i was wrong on that one .. *L* ..
and NO REVISIONIST HISTORY PLEASE ... your much better than that .. don't start acting like Peenie ...
one of the reasons Frye got traded when he did was because the Hags brought Dorsey in and were talking with him .. and we wanted Dorsey ... yes the Pitt game played a part in that .. but us wanting Dorsey also did .. folks tend to forget that ..
Quote:
No way Dorsey is here for another three years...No way.
your more than likely right .. hence why we signed him this year .. we gave him a nice SB to be absorbed by this years cap and gave him 3 years .... this is the best case scenario for him but if we have to let him go he can live with it because I'm sure his SB will more than take care of any hurt feelings ..
its a WIN - WIN ... we lock up our MENTOR for as long as we need him .. and if we decide we dotn need him after next year or the year after we let him walk ..
and WHO THE HELL DOES WANNA SEE THEIR 3RD QB????? hell most teams dotn wanna see their 2nd QB ..
it was a GREAT MOVE ... one U may not be able to appreciatte .. so trust me on this one .. SMART ASS MOVE by Opie .. ZERO DOWNSIDE since he did it now and I would guess almost ALL THE SB was written off this year .. and if not all we wotn have to eat much when we do cut him cause its spread out over 4 years (one of them being this year and is all ready completed) and U know hes going to make it through next year ..

All depends as to what unfolds during the offseason...and that could very well happen. A lot depends on Phil's tender on DA....and after the Browns are eliminated for playoffs(one way or another)and he's evaluated DA ..he 'll send out his feelers to see what his stock is..
