Newer poster here. Long time lurker as well, for several seasons. They don't make it easy to register here (no free email clients).
I have a question and I want you guys to take a stance on it. I don't want this to become a debate. I want to know how you see the situation honestly playing out this offseason and who you all see being our starting QB at the start of next season. Honestly, I've thought about this long and hard, and I have NO CLUE what is going to happen. I can't even begin to guess, although I will later in thread. This is your chance to look into the crystal ball and prognosticate.
Game 1 next season. Will it be Anderson or Quinn under center? How do we get to that point and why?

Ken Dorsey, Quinn will get a bad hair cut and wont be able to play and Anderson will lead the Lions to the Super Bowl where they play the Browns and Ken Dorsey wins it for us.

I'm going to go with Brady Quinn.
I know the saying, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it, but I just don't see Anderson in here for the long haul. I mean it would work, but Savage wants to improve this team, and w/out a 1st round pick, that makes it hard to bring elite young talent to this team.
Quinn will be ready, and if anything, I think he could lead this team to just as many wins as we have this year as long as we keep the talent we have on offense. A lot of QB's could come in and do it, especially with a work horse like Jamal Lewis.

This season is not over! The Browns will start D.A. this Sunday agianst the 6.9ers! (something good interupted by a period!) Barring all injuries in that game on Sunday, and our possible chance to get to the playoffs, and Next years pre season try outs er camp battles without injury or politics.....I believe that it will be D.A. in game one. I'm curious why Brady didn't get his shot in the Bengals game after D.A's 4 INT's in the wind?

I'm gonna go with the past as my guide.
I think that we'll sign DA to the highest tender, and no one will bite. Teams will look at FA and think they can sign someone that will not make them trade a 1st and 3rd, and we'll keep DA.
Romeo seems to always err on the side of the incumbent, and/or the front runner/guy with most experience and DA will be our starter, until he has a bad game like last week, and the media and fans will be clamoring even harder for Brady, and it will cause us to have a divided lockerroom and a divided fan base, and a coach who will stay steady but will give into the calls, and start Brady.
but not the first game. Game 1 will be DA, if all goes to how ive described, i feel like thats how itll play out though.

If DA is no longer on the roster, then obviously it's because Quinn is going to start... If DA is still on the roster then I think it plays out like this... if we DO go to the playoffs, then DA has the strong upper hand because you don't bench the guy that helped get you to the playoffs, however I think his leash will be a bit shorter... if we DO NOT go to the playoffs, then I think there is a better than average chance that Quinn starts and the Bengals game will be used as a large reason why... Regardless, the word out of Berea will just be that Quinn beat him out in camp and preseason.... And I agree with the other poster, you can't post a question like that and expect one word answers... why that would be like.. dare I say it... a POLL.

I mostly agree w/ this. I think it will be D.A. for game 1. But I think it will take several bad games from Anderson before anyone gives in and puts Quinn in.

I think it will be Brady Quinn.
Why? Because Anderson is a RFA this offseason and I think Phil Savage makes the decision not to match the contract DA is offered by a team in need of a QB. I'm assuming Savage will put the highest tender on him, which would result in us receiving a first and third round pick in exchange for DA. We have a QB on the roster behind Anderson that the front office obviously feels is the QB of the future (look at what we gave up for him). Getting a first rounder that we don't have right now in addition to a third rounder is just too sweet to pass up given our situation, in my opinion.

We high tender DA ... with the hopes of a 2nd and possibly a 3rd .. I said it 6 weeks ago .. NO WAY WE GET A FIRST ROUNDER FOR HIM ... and I highly doubt we get a 2nd rounder for him .. draft picks are just to valuable ... so he stays with us ... as he should ...
BQ kicks his ass starting from the first day of OTA's and it culminates with his making it a no brainer for RAC and Opie ...
BQ barring injury will start for us week 1 next year .. and folks then U will see a real QB ...
and this is not a slam on DA ... he played much better than I ever thought possible ... BQ just simply has tools and can do things DA can't .. and it will become obvious to everyone over the next 2 years ..

I agree that we will tender DA. It only makes sense. Especially if you believe, as I do, that playing BQ is the plan for next year. But I do think that someone would give (the Browns) a 1st rounder.
If someone wants Derek that bad I don't think the 1st round pick would be a prohibition for them. The other team can always rationalize it by saying "Which is a safer bet? DA or a kid that we'll have to pay $30 million to sign and who we won't know if he'll be a boom or a bust"
As far as who will start next year......My guess would be Quinn but it really depends on how they handle DA this offseason. And to some extent how he plays in whatever season we have left this year.

Oh this is gonna be a BLAST...
Quinn's the man around here...I'm virtually positive on that one...
We DISAGREE on the compensation we'll see for Anderson...
Some QB Needy team will give us the compensation and sign him to some INSANE long termer...And NO...It ain't gonna be Parcells with that BS that PFFFFFFFT and Rizzo are spreading...lmmfao...
Man I can't wait till March!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Anderson...U played WAY better than anyone thought u could...But don't let the door hitcha in the ass...Pulling off getting Thomas and Quinn...Then concievably the BEST Pure Corner in the draft was a COOOOOOOO...Gettin' that 1st Rounder back the following year????????
PRICELESS

I am really not sure on this....but from what I thought, isn't a 1st and 3rd automatic compensation for a team to pay when we offer the high tender? Or are the picks negotiated?

You cant have your QB be the primary reason you lose big games.I consider DA personally losing Arizona and the Bungals. Therefore BQ is the starter.

Those are the picks that come with the high tender ..... but like just about everything else in life it can be negotiated .... its happend in the past ..teams make the high tender to "protect" themselves .. what would happen is lets say the Bears want him .. they call Opie and say we want Da but no way we are giving U 1st ... so they negotiate and get a deal in place .. say a 2nd this eyar and a 3rd next eyar .. then the Bears negotiate with DA's agent and strike a deal .. once that happens .... we withdraw the tender and announce the trade and then DA signs with in this case the Bears ... DnD .. not gonna as big a blast as U think ... not gonna get involved in this very deep .. notice I have hardly participated in these threads arguing the merits/fualts of DA .. not worth it ... and in the new year .. I'm going to be a kinder/gentlier Diam .. at least thats the plan for now .. .... heres a smaple of the new kinder gentlier Diam thats hopefully in store for the new year .. disclaimer: my "favorites" will not be entitled to a new and Gentlier Diam .. they will be Grandfathered in .. Otto ,, I hope your right on the comp my man .. I really do .. I just don't see it .. but I've been wrong before ... lets hope this adds to the list ..

Someone else posted a rumor about us trading DA to Miami for the 1st pick in the draft and we take McFadden. Sorry, it's hard to contain myself. Anyway, with the advantage of this Zoltar prophecy we of course start the kid as DA will no longer be here. Looking at the Frye fiasco at the start of this year, I'm not at all sold on our coaching/management staff's ability to evaluate qb's properly and if DA is still with us, he gets the start if he's healthy.

A high tender does require a 1st and 3rd Rounder.. That doesn't mean that two teams can't negoiate a different deal and call it a trade..
My understanding is this:
If we offer DA a High Tender and nobody else offers him a contract, then he's ours.. But that doesn't mean that someone can't come up to Savage and say,, Look, Phill.. Nobody is gonna give up a 1st and 3rd for DA,, but we'll give you a 2nd and 3rd if you will do the trade!
What Phil does with that depends on if he believes that nobody will give up a 1st and 3rd for DA... It may also depend on what they think of Brady Quinn and it may utlimatly depend of whether or not DA is willing to be a back up to Quinn if that were to occure.
NOW, If we offer DA a High Tender and someone offers him a contract for more, then that team owes us a 1st and 3rd round pick, UNLESS we match it. In which case, we are back to DA being ours.
Then there is all the poison pill stuff.. And we still haven't figured out if the NFL has done anything to stop that from happening. I'm not even gonna go there right now...
But basically, what I'm saying is, that to me, it looks as if there are several scenarios that could take place.
The orignal poster of this thread wanted to know a simple question, who will start the first game next season.
The real answer is, who knows. THere are too dang many things that could happen to even begin to speculate at this moment!

I agree with those who say that DA gets the High Tender. What I am not sure of is if we can get a 1st rounder for him? and if not, would Phil take a high 2nd for him? I also think that either way, whether Phil trades him away, or if no one is willing to give up what Phil would want for him, I think that BQ is the man next yr. What am I basing that on........nothing really. Hell, I thought Frye would be the man this yr. and we all know what happened to that.......... We just still need to much help in other areas (such as DL, LB, RB, and even WR), to turn the corner from a contender to a legit playoff team. I don't see Savage turning down a decent offer to keep DA on the team when we have invested so much into Brady. JMHO

Again, if we high tender him and another team gives DA a qualifying offer, then they have NO choice,, they gotta give us a 1st and 3rd.. Thems the rules!
Anything can be negociated however...

yea, I know,
I guess I should have been a little more clear. I was thinking along the lines that another poster stated before me.......
That if Savage didn't think anyone would give up a 1st rounder for him, but someone called and said they would give up their 2nd and 3rd if we could work out a sign and trade.
Didn't somethink like that occur with Schaub?

Game 1 next season. Will it be Anderson or Quinn under center? How do we get to that point and why?
Starting QB game 1 next season.............
Brady Quinn
I can sit here and nit pick the qualities that DA lacks to be a "franchise QB" untill hell freezes over, but the fact is he simply doesn't have the tools for that. Our futrure lies in the hands of Brady Quinn.
How will that happen? Now it gets a little complicated and there is no standard correct answer. It could happen in different ways. Unless of course somebody has a crystal ball to tell the future.
We do know that there are at least a "few" teams in dire need at the QB position. What we don't know, is the avenue these teams will choose to address that problem. It is my considered opinion that this draft class is VERY weak at the QB position. At least as it pertains to "NFL ready" QB's.
IF there are GM's in the NFL that share my view on this QB draft class, t will greatly increase the odds that we will get "a good offer" for DA. A 1st and 3rd? I sort of doubt it. But a high second and a DL player of above average quality is NOT out of the question. So there it will rest on the shoulders of Savage.
IMO, Savage is a very shrude operater. I believe he will take a serious look at all offers that come his way. And it is also my opinion as to exactly "what he's looking at realisticly.. And from a realistic standpoint, I think it's obvious as to the scenario he will be judgeing.
He will be looking at,"What he can get for his *back-up QB* "
IF Brady Quinn is our future, (which I believe he is), how much exactly IS a "back up QB" worth? I believe a low first/high second round pick, combined with a player of need or third rounder, will be MORE than ample payment in the eyes of Savage.
Will we get such an offer? Who knows?
So it may very well be that DA suits up in a Browns uniform by the time training camp rolls around. But think about that for a moment. Let's look at this year. Vinny Frickin' Testiverde ended up getting signed!

So there WILL come a point, IMO, that somebody will pony up to get DA. So I believe the time will come when a team offers enough that Savage will feel that he is recieving the proper compensation for DA and he will end up elsewhere.
Who,when and where is anybody's guess. But the bottom line is this.............................
DA will want to be a starting NFL QB. Brady Quinn will want to be a starting NFL QB. Neither will be happy in the back up role next year. Savage has shown us that he doesn't want guys here who don't wish to be here.
That only leaves one option. One of them must go. IMO, DA will NEVER be worth any more than he is NOW! So if you ARE going trade him, trade him while he's worth the most.

THE decision will be based upon who comes forward with the best offer. Meaning if there is a first and third involved at what position in the draft? Early? 1-10, mid? 11-20, late? 21-32. In the Matt Schaab deal, it was swapping first rounders plus two second round picks. If the best offer is 2 second round picks, I would not accept that. Once the offers are made then you project the draft (you mock). You grade prospective players available based upon need (defensive) and BPA. You weigh all the factors. Savage will then make the call.
It will be Quinn with the first start.
If the offers are not good enough Quinn and DA will battle. I still believe Quinn will be the starter. I like DA. I believe he is an above average NFL starter. I just believe that long term Quinn will be the better investment. And since that is the case then you have to leverage DA's market value. We need to add more core talent on defense. You can not allow DA to walk as an unrestricted FA and get nothing like San Diego did with Brees.
As much as I would like to keep both for the depth given all the injuries at QB. The determining factor is you have to maximize value to the team. Quinn plus two high picks does that. The risk of course is injury and Dorsey becomes our starter. That is the gamble you have to decide on.

Its impossible to answer the questions that you ask without getting into the Deadbate...actually that is the deadbate...lol
Me...all I know is that the best thing for the Browns no matter what direction we go in the offseason (and I will opine when that offseason comes about) is for DA to play lights out this coming Sunday and then have another great showing in SanDiego the following week. I do think that the coaching staff has evaluated all 3 of our QBs and have a good bead on the direction we will pursue.

To tell the truth, I believe you may be right about it ending up being Quinn and it may be for any of the reasons you state. But Pit, you sure sound as if you are saying that DA is a finished product and won't get any better..
I don't know if I agree with that... It's a bold prediction and except for pointing out his flaws, there really isn't much else to point to. The difference between our thinking is that, you seem sure he won't improve and I'm NOT sure he won't improve. Ehh,, if he's gone or becomes the back up, it's moot!
Either way, If I were a betting man, I'd say that DA is signed to a long term deal, him and Quinn duke it out in camp for the starter spot and my guess is that Quinn will win the job.
Best of both worlds for the Browns... about the only bad thing is that we don't get some extra picks for DA......
OR
DA is tendered, we get picks/players or some of each and Quinn is the Starter.
And I can live with it either way!

My intent wasn't that "he's a finished product".
With having only one full season as a starter under his belt, I'm sure that given the oppertunity to continue to start, he can improve further.
However, I do feel that he has some "limitations" that are "rarely" reversable. I do enter into the equasion that while he has only "started" one full season, the fact remains that he is a "third year pro".
Which does mean that he has been coached and trained by NFL staffs for three years. And three years later, his accuracy and touch are quite suspect at best.
So while I do see the possibility of improvement, in my mind, after three years in the NFL, I seriously question "how much" improvement he can or will make.
It's more a question of his "ceiling". Given his physical attributes, what is "the best DA can be"? After three years of NFL coaching and a full year as a starter, my opinion is he's not very far from his ceiling.
There's no doubt that it's all based on opinion and conjecture. However, IF Quinn becomes our starter, DA's value will drop. While he may be "progressing behind the scenes", if he isn't starting, a back up QB's value is far less than a starters.
But realisticly, do you see either Quinn or DA being happy in a back up role next year? I really don't. And I do believe when comparing the physical attributes and the "ceiling", going forward with the future in mind, that the potential ceiling for Quinn is much higher in the long haul.
And I also think that Savage has shown a willingness to trade people who "do not want to be here". I doubt either will be happy to stay on the bench next year. That's the scenario behind my assertion that "DA will never be worth more in trade than he is right now".
I don't see us keeping Quinn on the bench. If that scenario pays out, then DA's value gradually drops.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

"Didn't somethink like that occur with Schaub?"
yes even if you cannot actually trade an RFA there are ways as it was done with Schaub.
Matter of fact Savage (when DA was at his hottest) stated that we would not look at anything else but full compensation and not do a Schaub type deal...and he used Schaub's name.
Same with the Franchise Tag.
But in both cases the Player must be in full acceptance of the trade cause it needs their cooperation to get around the CBA rules.

I would be surprised if we did not tender DA at the highest level. If someone signs him to an offer sheet, then we either match it or take the 1st and 3rd. If the offer has a poison pill, then we take the 2 draft picks and say "Thanks." Even if there is no poison pill, I bet we still take the picks and say "Thanks."
The question is if someone would actually make him an offer, knowing it could cost them the 2 picks. At first I would say "no way." But then two thoughts strike me.
One is that a team in need for a QB would not think twice about using a first round pick on a QB coming out of college. A first round QB means a lot of money. And you don't know what the guy will do in the pros. DA has a full season under his belt. He's done a great job, better than expected. You have an idea of what he's capable of in the pros. Would it be worth an additional 3rd round pick to take some of the mystery out of a QB acquisition? Kind of like insurance. "You can have this unknown for a 1st round pick, but toss in a 3rd and you can have this instead ..."
The second is the Matt Schuab deal. Swap firsts and cough up two 2nd round picks for a guy with little actual experience. Once again, DA is much more of a known quantity than Schuab was at the time, and has some success. Is a 1st and 3rd too epxensive when compared to what Atlanta got for Schuab?
We just may find someone willing to hand DA an offer sheet. If we do, then we're back in the first round.

Yeah, he's a third year pro (going on 4) Quote:
Which does mean that he has been coached and trained by NFL staffs for three years.
Year one: Brian Billick and his offensive gurus that haven't be able to get any QB to excel.... (excel,,, big difference from just being able to not screw up to bad, ala Dilfer)
Year two: Mo Carthon... Need I say more
Year three: Chud and some players around him and he's kinda blossomed.
So yeah, it's his third year, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he's been tutored very well in the first two years.

Again, 3 years, yes, three good year of solid teaching and coaching,, I don't think so.

I don't know what his ceiling is... Given that I think very little of his first 2 years in the league, I tend to discount them as you have already figured out..

Ah Ha! This is where DA needs to give due consideration to his surroundings.
It's true, I don't think either one of them wants to sit and be a back up.. I agree. But in DA's case, he may be smart to take a nice 3 or 4 year deal and stay with the Browns.
This is just one way of looking at it, but given the make up of this team and the direction it's going and the talent that exists on this offense and CHUDs system, DA may be smart to stick it out.. This system seems to work well for him and there is no telling what the system will be on another team.. will it work in his favor, will he have BE, KW2, JJ and JL or anyting like them to work with?
Lots of if's there Pit...
On the other hand, lots of my feelings towards DA stem from what his teammates say about him in the press.. I do take that with a grain of salt because they said the same things about Frye and Dilfer.. back in the day it was about Holcomb and Couch.. it's expected that they won't throw thier teammate under a bus...
But I do sense a level of honesty in what they say that I didn't always see before... so for what it's worth, I could be all wet on the subject,, and it would not surprise me in the least to find out that I am

Ask RAC because his opinion is the only one that matters.

Thanks with a Snicker...hehe
I look at this in this way...
1) Savage AND THE REST thought enuff of Quinn to start offering next years first rounder as soon as Miami stupidly took Ginn...And saved cap bucks each and every time a team came to the podium...
2) Why change your focus from Quinn after doing all that to snag em'???
3) U do not make a Rook QB your #2 unless u r comfy he's got the offense down...Happened in week 2...
4) We ain't payin' Anderson the stupid bucks some team will offer em'...Not with Quinn sittin' in the wings and no first rounder as of now...U don't trade away 1st round pix for a QB unless he's your future...It's really as simple as that...And that 1st we gave Dallas was I'm sure thought to be a Top 10...LMAO...Skew U Jones...hehehe
Savage would LOVE getting back into round one for this coming draft...And would pat himself on the back if he can do it and still have his QB in the fold...PRICELESS!!!!!!!!
Go Browns!!!
